Aragorn had heard tales of the sea, but could never have imagined its size! Blue waters stretched out until they seemed to touch the sky. The waves broke frothy crests upon the sand, tireless steeds of Ulmo.

He gazed at that distant horizon. Somewhere out there, far to the West, his ancestors' land had fallen beneath those blue waters. And still farther westward lay the forbidden shores of Valinor.

For a moment he stood lost in wistful thought, wondering what might have been.

Aragorn grasped a pebble and cast it into the waves. Then he walked away without looking back.

"It's magic, naneth!" Estel exclaimed, gazing in wonder at Lake Nenuial.

The setting sun was reflected as a crimson ball of flame within the waters.

Gilraen smiled wistfully. Maybe you will, son," she said. "Maybe you will.

Long had I desired to look upon the carven faces of Elendil's sons. The sight did not disappoint me. For a moment my heart soared. I, Elendil's heir was returning.

Then the enormity of my heritage and our mission seized me. Gandalf had fallen, Denethor would scarce welcome me, and should I not accompany Frodo even to the very heart of Mordor?

Sometimes the heaviness of the burden laid upon me almost crushes me. But I am not like a leaf floating in the water, with no power to resist the current. The river leads me onward to my destiny.

On the anniversary of his coronation Aragorn, together with his Queen, would visit the Court of the Fountain where the White Tree bloomed.

This year, the blossom was especially fair. The fountain sparkled in the sunshine. The King knew he was most blessed.

Suddenly with a pang, Aragorn recalled those lost to him, Halbarad and his mother, now beyond the circles of the world, while he was forever parted from the Ring- Bearers far across the sundering seas.

His cheeks felt moist. He blinked. Was it mingled tears of joy and sorrow, or spray from the fountain upon his face?
