Fate

Last attempts to wrest the burden away had failed. Predictably, Frodo acted in the selfless matter Bilbo thought he would.

Even before Frodo had uttered those words of commitment, Bilbo had known. This Quest would not be given to him, but to the one he most loved. Heavy regrets mingled with self-reproach as tears that would not spill gathered in his eyes. Feelings of deep regret extinguished any thoughts of it ever being happy at the end.

 But he could not let Frodo worry.  He had to be strong for the one who had to attempt a most hopeless quest.
