Chapter 56. Keeping the Home Fires Burning

'What's this?' asked Samwise Gamgee, staring at the rather bulky bundle Frodo was holding out to him.

'Take it, Sam,' Frodo said again. 'It won't bite, I promise.'

'Has it teeth then?' Sam asked, feigning alarm.

To his satisfaction, his beloved master threw back his head and laughed, an echo of long-ago golden days. 'Open it and see!'

Sam took the bundle – 'twas unexpectedly heavy – undid the string, and lifted away the concealing paper. 'Cooking-gear!'

'Yes, my dear hobbit,' Frodo said. 'Ruffian-gathered, but the original owner could not be identified. Call it a late birthday present... or a welcome-home gift.'
