Author's Notes: ...Thrain I, Nain's son, came to Erebor, the Lonely Mountain, near the eastern eaves of Mirkwood, and there he began new works, and became King Under the Mountain. In Erebor he found the great jewel, the Arkenstone, Heart of the Mountain." (Appendix A, III, "Durin's Folk")
Heart of the Mountain
Borin gazed in wonder at the great stone his King had placed on his worktable. "I have never seen its like."
Thrain nodded. "Nor have I. Even in its rough state it is magnificent, and not merely for its size. It must be treated with utmost delicacy. I would entrust it to none but you."
Borin scarcely heard him; he was already planning which of his tools would be needed to bring out the best of each facet of the immense gem.
It was nearly three years before he presented the Arkenstone, the Heart of the Mountain, to his King.
