| Though this was a serious work - I really had to giggle as I read the 'pilfering' line - all I could think of was Frodo and a certain farmer's mushrooms! As I read about the hope of a good harvest blowing in the wind - I thought of those who were also just recently decimated by the floods and their hopes of a good harvest... difficult times! I loved the line aoub the 'trees not interfering'... good thought! And Bilbo's insistence that he could fight - I do not doubt it and am suprised at Frodo! Good tale - I'm praying for rain for California too! Author Reply: Thank you for your lovely review. | Very touching. How terrible for the good people to work so hard on the fields all year, and then a fire threatens the fruit of their hard work. Author Reply: Yes, it is terrible. | Those wonderful, determined hobbits. They don't give up do they? I love how they work together against the common foe.I loved the image of them dancing in the rain too. Forest fires must be terrifying and heartbreaking. To see the land you love engulfed in flames is a nightmare. Thankfully we don't have that problem in Britain much unless we're in the middle of a real heatwave. Not much danger this year - we're somewhat waterlogged. Author Reply: Yes, Hobbits are the best example in Middle Earth of binding together for the common good of all. As I have said before, Hobbits are a picture of the best of us. | An excellent story, Neilia! And a worthy tribute to the fire fighters. I have a nephew who is a forester with fire fighting training in Missouri. | Well we are getting a handle on the fires here, but I don't think the fire fighters would object to a little gentle rain! | You captured the anxiety, the bravery of the fighters so well! I'm quite far from California, and I cannot begin to imagine how tense it is... now I think I see. The hobbits dancing in the rain was a wonderful image. Praying for all down there, Kitt : ) Author Reply: Thank you, Kitt. Even though I only have to endure a red sun and super hazy days, our home is safe in the middle of our northern city. | A splendid tribute. You’ve skillfully captured many aspects of the fire battles here in California that I have read and watched about. The only part I have experienced first hand is the smoke. It is the worst when the smoke is low like a filthy fog bank that you have to breath when you go out. But most of the time in my area it is high above. Still, it’s strange and haunting to look up and see the red sun during sunset and sunrise and to look around and see everything bear a color that’s slightly off because of the weird light. A constant reminder of my state’s plight. What a wonderful way to give tribute by telling a story about how our tough, valiant, adorable Hobbits deal with the same kind of crisis. Huzzah and kudos. | Hi Neilia, I, too, live in California, and while none of the fires were very close, the sky is too hazy to see all but the brightest stars, and I noticed a week ago that the moon was pumpkin-orange, as coppery as a lunar eclipse. I think you've captured the underlying tension and fear of such a situation well, as well as the concern that the hobbit neighbors have for each other as well as themselves. This is a fine tribute to all the firefighters who are fighting valiantly despite being spread so thin among so many fires (it's down to ~300 statewide, last I heard.... at one point it was ~1000.)
