How lovely to know you enjoyed it so much. :) Shelob's defeat at Sam's hands has always been one of the best scenes in LOTR (for me). Of course, it's been frustrating not knowing whether or not she crawled into her hole to die, or just to lick her wounds, but, still, at least this way it gaves fans like me a chance to speculate on paper (or PC, as the case may be). | How very nice to see something else from you, cousin dear! :) Well, Shelob never knew love so she could not know the power of such, especially from someone who was love incarnate. Th description of him and his attack is one of my favorite quotes in the whole book. Shelob met her match! Namarie, God bless, Your happy bloom :) Author Reply: Hello cheeky Took! | Wow! You're quite good in thinking like an Evil Creature ;-) And you use a powerful language! What manner of being was it that appeared so delightfully unthreatening, so insignificant, yet fought with such relentless passion as to ensure the retreat of Ungoliant’s last child? Well, the answer is quite simple: a hobbit! Shelob was not the only being who totally misjudged the significance and abilities of hobbits. | Excellent account of Shelob's last moments - the huntress became the hunted and cornered and wounded, and it had never occurred to her that she might not live forever. Good characterisation of Ungoliant's most famous child! Author Reply: Hello Raksha The Demon, yeah, I thought that it was ironic that one of the greatest evils in M.E. was not (potentially) slain by her starter (mighy man) or main course (warrior elf), but by what should have been dessert (hobbit gardener). | Ah, I love to see the POV of such creatures from time to time, and this is very satisfying! Author Reply: Hello Larner, It is nice to see things from their perspectives, isn't it? Especially when they're a right nasty old so-and-so like Shelob - and especially when it's wayching her suffer as she made countless others before her... Is that a tad vengeful? Probably. Do I care? Well, as it's a thoroughly bad lot like her, no! *cackles evilly, before being struck down by a bolt of lighting* Er, okay. | Wow! You really thought about the possibilities of all of Shelob's injuries. Wounds from an elvish weapon, Eärendil's light.... Suddenly what had always seemed to me to be minor wounds take on a new seriousness. I remember someone's fic that had a brief allusion to how, sometime after the war, the Twins had climbed up to Cirith Ungol to end the danger that was Shelob. It made sense: huge as she was, dangerous as she was, the Twins would surely have been able to destroy her. But to their surprise, they discovered her body -- and it was clear that Sam had slain her. Author Reply: Hello eiluj, Yep. I've always thought the damage Sam, Sting & Eärendil's light did to Shelob must have been irreparable, and therefore, fatal. But, as the master left her fate hanging, I've had to do the same in this ficlet. Very frustrating when one's a canon junkie! Do oy remember the author or title of that story?
