And then he had shown up out of the blue at his doorstep last year--and Bilbo had not at once known who he was. Now that he thought about it, that seemed very peculiar. *grins* That was due to the lifting of the spell as we now know! Wizards do not 'become'; they simply are This is simply great and a reply typical of Gandalf! Thank you very much for this character study of both, Gandalf and Bilbo! A sweet chapter! Gandalf loves his hobbits and his hobbits love him, as Bilbo is beginning to understand. :) Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: Absolutely.

Oh, but very good indeed! Love this character study that tells us so much about both Bilbo and Gandalf! How Gandalf served to bring out the best in one of our favorite Bagginses! Author Reply: Thank you! I think Gandalf's enduring friendships with hobbits are fascinating to contemplate!

What a perceptive person Bilbo is! Inquisitive Tooks! (chortle) I'm sure he's known his share over the years, and more to come... This sounds incredibly Gandalf-y: Wizards do not 'become'; they simply are. Lovely character study. You're right, it reveals as much about the observer as the character he's observing! Author Reply: Yes, Bilbo's very perceptive, though he doesn't yet have the knowledge to understand just what he's perceiving sometimes. And Gandalf is quite aware of which side of the family all those questions are coming from, LOL! I'm glad you thought that line sounded "Gandalf-y". I once started reading a fic with a promising summary, only to backbutton in annoyance when it began to refer to a young Gandalf in "wizard school" (as if he'd gone to Hogwarts or something!) I'm sure he'd be equally annoyed at such a thought! And thanks! That's just what I was hoping for.
