| Oh, how delightful! So, Sam wasn't the only Gamgee to take on an adult's responsibilities early. Good! And Bilbo's innate wisdom is properly respected here, at least. Author Reply: I think in hobbit working class families, the children, especially the lads, would probably do so often. That was what usually happened historically after all. And we know that the villagers of Hobbiton were fond of Bilbo, whatever his more staid relatives thought. He'd have been respected as Master of the Hill, at any rate. But those who knew him best would recognize his wisdom. | |

| I don't remember reading this in 2006 (though I might well have, and even might have left a review!), so I am glad to read it here this morning. Such a lovely picture, warm and welcoming, that draws the reader in and makes me feel as if I'm a part of the picture, somehow. I love the way you draw hobbity relationships (and I'm glad the S-Bs went off somewhere, while I also feel sorry for them, for all that they're missing) and show what's truly important in life. It's a lesson the S-Bs might have profited from, come to think of it. Author Reply: I was searching for another story altogether by someone else when I came across this. I had very nearly forgotten it myself! Thank you so much for the kind words; I did want to show just how warm and caring hobbits are in general, and how Bilbo's wisdom affected the wider circle of his acquaintance. | |

| What a great story - I love Bilbo's telling of his adventure and what is true treasure. I hope the movie doesn't screw up Thorin's death and those wise words of his about a merrier world. Would that we would all heed such! I love Frodo with his arm around Sam. :) Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: To me, that is the key scene in the last movie. If PJ includes it, and if it is well-done, then I will forgive him everything else that he's done! I adore to show Frodo with his younger friends, taking care of them when they are little--it explains why they love him so much when they grow older. | |

| I just love this, and am so glad you posted it here. It's wonderful to see wisdom and hope being dispensed not just by Bilbo and his tales, but by loving and thoughtful parents. And "frightensome"! What a great word! :) Author Reply: Thanks! It just seemed Gafferish. I wanted Bilbo's story as a backdrop to Bell and Hamfast's conversation, since the lesson he was teaching through it would apply somewhat to their decision. | |

| This is such a delightful story! I love how the children all gathered around Bilbo to listen to him, and how he kept them all entranced. Too bad his older relatives didn't also listen--they might have learned something! =) And what a chance for a boy like Hamson to earn--well, not money, but a piece of a hog that he could sell for money. Hmm, I wonder what Yule gifts he ended up buying for his family? (For that matter, I also wonder if Bilbo got Yule gifts for his tenants!) Author Reply: Most of his older relatives through the Baggins line are far too staid. But some of his Took and Brandybuck relatives take him at face value. | |
