Trust a Brandybuck and a Took!  by Grey Wonderer 16 Review(s)

Never too old to need to feel protected.

Author Reply: Very true indeed!

wow, all these stories are wonderful, but I particularly like this one. I had no idea how old they were until Merry said! I figured that they were about Merry's coming-of-age time!

Author Reply: Thank you so much. I had fun writing that one. I like to think that even though they were both older they were still much the same in personality. I also think that in order to make the long trip to Gondor in their later years, they would have had to be in excellent health for older hobbits. Glad this surprised you!

It was a bit of a shock to realize this was the pair on the way to Rohan and Gondor, but it was fitting.

Thanks.

Author Reply: I like a surprise now and then. I also think that people tend to write older characters as being "all about their age" in a lot of instances. I like to think that there were times when their ages didn't matter. Tolkien does say that Merry was still hale when they set out on their journey. Glad you enjoyed this one.

You know, it's hard to picture Merry and Pip at the end of their lives. There are not many stories about there final jouney to the lands they fought so hard to defend in the War of the Ring. I like this one, although I didn't know where they were until it was flat out mentioned in the story. Very though-provoking and well-written.

Author Reply: Thank you. I wanted the reader to see them as they always were and be surprised once they realized their ages. I like to think of them as remaining the same in spirit even though they were much older. I am not too fond of the 'end of the road' tales where one of them has died or is dying. I prefer to think of them together on some adventure together. And also Tolkien does say that though he was 102, Merry was still hale, so I figured, why not? Thank you for reading.

This was a lovely little story that made me laugh in parts and made me tear up near the end. As usual, you did a beautiful job. :)

Author Reply: Thank you! It was my first older-Merry and Pippin-tale so I am pleased to hear that it went over well. Thank you for reviewing and I am happy to have given you a laugh with this one.

I loved this! Its very sweet:)
I really liked how you wrote it so we didn't know how old they were until near the end. I don't usually read stories set in this time period because they're so often sad, but I really enjoyed this!
It made for a very nice break in a midnight paper wrting session :)

Author Reply: I don't like sad stories very much. They can be sad in the middle or at the beginning, but I do like to end things on a happy note. I am a bit like Bilbo with his ending, "And he lived happily ever after until the end of his days." I like to think of Merry and Pippin in that way. Glad that you stopped by on your break and thank you for the review! Hope the writing went well!

Even as they have grown older some things will never change the love they hold for each other.
Pippin is frightened the snap of a twig and the russling of the trees, but ut is they are camping too close to things that happen long ago and he is frightened. At first Merry dosen't understand, but soon relizes.
He trys to lighten pippins mood as to say he is too old,and anything out there would laugh at him with a sword in hand(Quite funny)....
But as Pippin settles down Merry does relize as he is curled beside Pippin that he will never be to old to watch after Pippin as he has always done...

Love this one...Great job...

Author Reply: Thank you! Another of your lovely reviews! I do enjoy them. Glad that you liked this one.

Hullo, Grey Wonderer! How ya doin'? What can I say--once again you've outdone yourself. Not many stories out there of those beloved white-haired hobbits of ours. Loved this one--even after all these years, Merry is still his cousin's protector. There's just that special G.W. ingredient that makes this particular M&P pair unique...the banter that is so funny and amusing! Thank you so much for sharing your hobbit-world. :-)

Author Reply: Hey, long time no hear from. Hope you are well and writing. Drop me an email and let me know how things are going. Thanks for reading this one. I was trying to do something slightly different here and I am glad to see that you enjoyed it. I do think I may write a bit more on this time line if the mood continues to strike. Thanks for stopping by! Don't be gone too long!

Pippin has a point about that troll. Cute and very touching. I loved seeing Merry through Pippin's eyes, and it's fun to see that even though they're old, they haven't stopped their bantering.

Author Reply: I like to think that they kept right on teasing one another and acting like a couple of lads when they were allowed until the very end. But, I am a sucker for a happy ending! Thanks for the review!

That was very well done! I was totally fooled, until Pip gave Merry's age--Bravo!

Author Reply: Good to hear. I wanted it to be a surprise that they were at that point in time which is why I didn't print the quote from the book until after the story was over. LOL Glad you liked it.
