Sam will kill them if they seriously hurt themselves, as well, and they know it.

Okay, Pippin--get to his side.

Love the hobbitling rescue!

I am so glad to see you're finally posting 'Jewels' here at SOA. I never could think of a way to fix Estella's age either - so we'e going to happily not care that Tolkien made a mistake about it.

Was just re-reading 'A Healer's Tale' the other day - and I would like to say that that story is one of my favorite, so well designed and written, and made Woodruff my favorite OC, as well as making my heart bleed for Pippin - and I remember the chapter where Merry has climbed a tree, and Ferdi is telling him not to look down. How fortunate that the Brandybuck has Took cousins, who were able to teach him such important things. I supposed he returned the favor by teaching Pippin to swim.

Like the little touches in this chapter, like armour not being good for tree climbing, and the light bantering tone between the cousins is perfect for this stage of their lives.

Author Reply: LOL, happily not care that JRRT made a mistake about it...
(You don't know how many times that thought has crossed my mind.)

The cousins are so very young here! Especially Pippin, who is much different from stories set later. Sometimes it's fun to go back in time, but it is an awful lot of work too, trying to get the voices right.

I so love this story! And now you`ve put it up here too. That`s great. This si so wonderful. Sometimes I wonder how you manage to come up with one after another of such brilliant, long, exciting and beautifully written stories. I`m going to read this chapter for chapter again now, as you post them. Thank you!

Author Reply: Bless you, Anso, for your lovely and encouraging words.

Hope this finds you well, and that you get good and reliable internet access again soon.

Finally!! I was wondering if you'd ever post this here!

Are you sure you can't fix Estella's age? I think it could be done without rewriting too much. Only a few minor things would need slight adjusting. If you're still willing to try, e-mail me (kitzel@telus.net). I'll look over it and come up with suggestions.

Author Reply: Thanks, and you ought to have my email in your box already.

This is one of my favorite stories, and one of the first ones I read that you had written. Are you going to change anything in it as you post? I remember reading parts of this in conjuntion with A Small and Passing Thing, and realizing that your style had smoothed out quite a bit in the recent stories compared to this. But it is a lovely story, filled with your trademark hobbit wit and devotion, and introducting quite a few of the themes that run through your work. I'm happy to see it appearing here.

Author Reply: Yes, there will be changes as each chapter is posted, probably nothing major. I've pulled out the beta notes and dusted them off and am going over the story to make sure they all got in, then sending the results to my editor for polishing. Once she gets it back to me, I make the changes (or not--but usually, yes) as she suggests.

It is interesting, going back through the old stories (like "Duty"), to see how I've changed. In some ways I like the choppier style in "Duty", for it fits that piece. In other ways, I can see why my editor has made some of the suggestions she has. She takes a lot of the credit for my style smoothing out, but I'm learning.

Thanks!

Author Reply: I mean, she ought to get a lot of the credit... sheesh, I make her sound like a huge egotist, whereas she's so "behind-the-scenes" she won't even let me post her name.
