If I had a Hammer  by Grey Wonderer 10 Review(s)
LindeleaReviewed Chapter: 2 on 10/30/2005
This is truly inspired. Truly.

“You’re eating too fast even for a Took,” Merry teased.
(what a lot this tells about Tooks in so few words!)

it would hardly be fair to turn a grouchy Brandybuck loose on Hobbiton without someone going along to smooth things over a bit.
(such a picture!)

The Gaffer’s foot guards were more than a little too large on the lad and Pippin walked a bit like a duck in them.
(I can see this perfectly well in my mind)

Come to think on it, a shield might be nice.
(I'm laughing here. Dwarf helms, and shields as an afterthought.)

He couldn’t believe that the lad had actually nailed his own shirt to the practice board.
(Somehow I knew this was coming, from the way you introduced it, but still it made me chuckle)

“I was just sayin’ we should give it another go,” Sam said.
(Clever Sam. Reminds me of a rendition I heard of "Jack and the Beanstalk" where Jack mutters something under his breath, I forget what, and the Giant's wife asks him what he said, and he says something completely different, like "I said, I'm too hungry to go." And so she feeds him.)

I know that the Tooks wisely leave the child there as often as they can
(poor Pippin! gossip is such an unlovely thing)

Why I was hit in the head so hard I saw stars for two days! He ruined my best work shirt with grease, nailed me to a board, spilt a whole can ‘o red paint into my tool sack, broke one of my best saws off at the handle, and sawed my best work table in half.
(I hope I didn't waken the family, laughing at this list of woes...)

“Least you got other children, Gaffer. I only had that one work table.”
(What a capper!)

Looking forward to reading more another night. Thanks!

Author Reply: That review was such fun to read! I love the way you listed what you enjoyed about the chapter and I thank you for taking the time to do it. I'm glad that you got a laugh or two out of this chapter. That last line about the work table may actually be my favorite line in the story so I am very glad that you liked it. Come back when you get the time and thank you for the review!

Those meanies! All of them are so nasty to poor pip, except maybe Sam and Frodo. I just want to give Pippin a big hug and tell him that nobody trusts me with tools either!

Author Reply: Tools can be trouble for nearly anyone without much experience. Pippin may just be having a bit more trouble than most at this point! Thanks for the review and I hope you enjoy the story!

“Least you got other children, Gaffer. I only had that one work table.”

LOL LOL LOL

Poor Pippin! He's nearly killed two hobbits and has Merry furious and I don't think he's even too aware of it all. Wonderful!!!

Author Reply: Someone has to be the last to know. Pippin may be the reason that people wear hard hats on job sites. Who knows?

The terrors of the small Took with the hammer in his hand! I'm not giggling now--I'm outright guffawing! Sam is already earning the title of Samwise the Brave--or is it Samwise the Foolhardy?

Tobias and the Gaffer are earning the right to drink their breakfast, you know!

Author Reply: You know this may have been Sam's training for the quest. After this, Mordor might not have seemed all that dangerous.
Cheers!

Author Reply: Thank you! Good to hear from you. I hope you will be writing something soon. I just love your stories. Glad you are enjoying this one. It was supposed to be a short little story but it has just gotten out of hand and now it looks like there will be plenty more to come. Thanks for the review!

Seems that poor Pip is just accident prone...*anybody* could nail themselves to a board... That darned Merry--but I still love him! Good old Sam. :-) Had a good laugh with Tunnely and the Gaffer!

Author Reply: More Gaffer in a few. I am having so much fun with him. He's a great character to write. I may have to put him in all of my stories if this keeps up. Funny Sam is hard for me to write but his father is so much fun! Glad this made you laugh!

ROFLOL! "Sam was laying flat on the barn floor with his hands over his head. He peered up at Master Pippin and said, “I think so. I didn’t know I could move that fast.”
Poor Sam! Hope he survives working with Pippin! Will be waiting for more.

Author Reply: Thanks for reading and I am glad you got a laugh out of this chapter. More will be up by tonight and thank you for the review!

That is one big huff that Merry is in! And it's ALL HIS OWN FAULT. I suppose that, now Pippin is getting older, he's not quite as willing to worship his big cousin and is beginning to show signs of independence. But Merry likes to be needed.

Sam is a much better - and very brave - support at this time, though. Pippin may well come out of this having learnt a huge amount. And not just about carpentry. (Measure twice, cut once, Pippin.)

And poor Frodo. Having to deal with woodworking Pippin, sidetracked Sam and crotchety Merry. Demands beyond the call of duty for a bachelor cousin. Still at least he knows Pippin's trials from experience.

Tobias Tunnely is just plain chicken, though.

Author Reply: Thanks for the review. Merry does have issues at this point, but Pippin has a few of his own that will turn up directly. Sam is always a dear and in this case, he is the best hobbit for the job. As ro Frodo, his troubles are just beginning in this one. Once again, the responsibility falls on the oldest and we know who that is. Oh, and you haven't heard the last of Tobias Tunnely in this one either.
