If I had a Hammer  by Grey Wonderer 11 Review(s)
GamgeeFestReviewed Chapter: 13 on 10/14/2005
LOL, poor Frodo, having to deal with cousins who are continually in a funk. No wonder he never married and had kids of his own. ;) And Frodo gets some revenge on Sam for the grapes!

I remember that feeling when sleeping over at my grandparents house as a kid - dark, strange, way too quiet house, strange shadows you're not used to. Pippin was surprised by the change to his room and it made him feel a bit displaced. Add to that the other problems he's encountering this summer, it's easy to see why he feels so awkward and inadequate. He might even be feeling like he doesn't belong there. Poor Pippin!

Author Reply: I had that feeling at my grandparents' house when I was small too. Funny the things that you remember, isn't it? I have a bit of sorting out to do on this story in several areas but I do hope to get to it soon! Thanks for reading and for keeping an eye on my version of Sam.

Ah, how wonderful to be able to have something on poor Sam, even if it is feet stuck to the shellac. Now I'm curious as to why Pippin doesn't sleep in his room, also.

Odd creatures, Tooks can be.

Author Reply: Very odd creatures, Tooks can be. Even stranger still, teenage males! LOL That makes Pip a double threat in this one. I am sure that Frodo will enjoy his knowledge of Sam's mishap with the shellac, but somehow, I think Sam will still be way ahead of the game as far as knowledge of embarrassing incidents goes. Thanks for reading!

So there's more to Pippin's gypsy sleeping habits than wanting to guard his w-- artefact. I loved Merry tucking his cousin in his bed and sleeping on the sofa - it seems as if good relations have been resumed.

Most entertaining to see Frodo setting up a Pippin trap - and Sam happening on his asleep with his head on the kitchen table. They'll work it out in the end, I imagine. And I shall be only too pleased to discover what is in Pippin's mind.

So how is the w-- artefact getting on?

Author Reply: Well, it has been coated with shellac, as you know. LOL I am hoping to build a bit more in the next chapter, or let Sam and Pippin build a bit more.
I enjoyed making Frodo just a bit sneaky in this chapter. After all, he is going to have to get creative if he is going to get through Pippin's summer at Bag End. LOL

Awww, Merry standing in the doorway watching Pippin sleep just made my heart go all pitter-pat. So very sweet, and then steering him back to bed, and giving up his warm bed so Pippin could really go back to sleep. I really like this chapter. Big surprise. :-)

Author Reply: I figured that in Pip's present mood the only way he might allow someone to 'help him' a bit was if he were too tired to notice it. Merry does still want to watch over him, but Pippin has made it difficult in this one. Glad you liked this chapter and I do thank you for all of your lovely reviews!

I really want to know what's going on in Pippin's head. I suppose I just have to wait, but I'm impatient!

As always, you treat these hobbits so very gently, even while allowing them to be less than gentle with themselves sometimes. I always know I'm going to enjoy a story when it has your name attached. :)

Author Reply: That is such a nice thing to say! Thank you so much. I am glad that you like this one and I appreciate the reviews. More on Pippin's thoughts soon!

Ohh now I want some bacon...... I'll admit that I didn't know what shellac was until I looked it up while reading this, and I was talking to my teacher the other day and she said it and I felt so smart! lol. This is getting to be much longer than I thought it would be. That's a good thing. Gives me something to do.... :D

Author Reply: LOL Other people's stories always manage to make me hungry if they mention food. I know PIppinfan1988 was writing one at one point with lots of mention of stew in it and I was constantly hungry for stew! Hope you got that bacon.

I have used shellac before and so it was easy to imagine someone becoming stuck up in it. It gets sticky in a hurry. Glad to know that the story is becoming educational. Thanks for reading!

You know, you are really piquing my curiosity with Pippin not sleeping in his bed! I think I've suspected all along as to why, but there is always that chance that the author will take a "left turn" and leave me in the dust. :-) I'll let you know if I was wrong. :-) Great interaction between Pippin and Frodo--then again, you've always had their characters down pat. Thanks for sharing!

Author Reply: Glad you liked the part with Pippin and Frodo. I usually let Merry and Pippin have the long conversations but this time I decided to let Frodo take a stab at it. As to that left turn that the author might be taking, well, you just never know. You might have it all figured out or maybe I don't even know where it's going. LOL Is it about time for breakfast again?

Ah Ha! It is the bed that's the problem!!! Now, what about the bed? *think, think, think* I'll just have to "stay tuned" to find out ;) Thank you for so much fun :)

Author Reply: LOL Everyone is guessing. I wonder who's right? I am glad that you are enjoying this story and I thank you for the lovely reviews. The question about why Pip is 'sleeping around'(sorry I just had to do that.) will be answered before too much longer.

"Write it," Frodo smiled putting a finger to Pippin's lips. "You need practice writing, you do not need practice talking, Peregrin." LOL!!! This is definitely true!

I'm still trying to figure out, what's wrong with Pippin's room. Maybe, his new room is just too far away from Merry's? But why would he rather sleep in the barn, which is even further away from his Merry?

It was very nice of Merry to leave his bed to Pippin, though!

Author Reply: It won't be too long now until the sleeping question will be answered. Frodo or Merry or Sam have to figure it out soon. LOL Glad you liked that "write it." bit from Frodo. That was actually one of my favorite lines. Thanks for reveiwing!

Aw, poor Pip! He's too old to sleep *with* Merry, but he doesn't want to be so far away either, and he's feeling a bit displaced. He probably found the other little room cozy rather than cramped. Poor Frodo, just trying to please a couple of lads who are at two different stages of "betwixt and between".

I loved Frodo's earnest attempts to find out what was wrong with the room.

I loved Sam's bemusement when he saw Pippin sleeping at the table.

But best of all, I loved Pippin all sleepy with his defenses down and Merry coaxing him to sleep in his own bed, while he went and curled up in the parlour. That was *sooo* sweet.

Author Reply: Even if Pippin is too sleepy to notice it, Merry is still looking out for him and Frodo is trying desperately to look out for both of them. LOL

Do you suppose Sam ever just had the urge to get them all in a room and give them a good talking to? I think that he must have been tempted to tell the lot of them a thing or two. But being Sam, he didn't do it. He just went right on being helpful and supportive.

Glad you are enjoying it and that you for reading!
