Author Reply: I would not want to have Aragorn's anger directed at me, would you? Come to think of it, I hadn't thought much of whether he would blow hot or cold. Cold, I'd imagine, considering how old he is, the amount of experience he's been through, and that a hot-tempered man would be unlikely to survive. I think the King is going to arrive in the nick of time. I'm pulling for him, anyhow. | |

| I don't think Aragorn is quite aware just how rigid his cousin's mind-set is. Or, come to that, that he doesn't really see hobbits as being his equals. He's probably always been safe and reliable and consistent and good at the paperwork - but he lacks imagination and he has little empathy. Although he does know he's a man of habit. And he knows part of the story now. (Not the Lop and little Pippin part!) Shame Pippin didn't use the Will saving Diamond and Farry from freezing to death argument. Not that it would have made any impression on the bone-headed Steward. Then, just as they were thinking 'we've done it' - it became apparent to them that they hadn't done it at all, and had probably arrived only in time to scrape up the left-overs. Get that king to the gallows! Will is going to need him if he is to have any chance of surviving this - and so, I would think, is Jack. Oh my. This is some story! (A bit longer than the few hundred words mentioned too - but I'm not complaining!!) Author Reply: You're probably right. They protected the Shire together, but they hardly ever dealt with any Shire-folk, except perhaps Bilbo? I can see Aragorn's cousin, never having got to know any hobbits, as looking at them as children, to be protected, and never quite understanding how mature and even sophisticated hobbits could be. Yes, he's alwasy been safe and reliable and consistent, a man you could count on. And there's another reason he's steward, which will come out soon, but might make things a bit more understandable. I am really looking forward to the Lop-and-Pippin part coming out, when things have cleared up a bit. We've reached the peak, and now it's coasting to the finish, pretty much, and the celebration to come. Whew. I just hate that feeling, the "we did it!" that changes with a sudden revelation... Glad you're not complaining! | |
