When the King Comes Back  by shirebound 24 Review(s)
Eirinn LeighReviewed Chapter: 7 on 6/18/2015
"Did you say... burglar?"
It is indeed hard imagine the upstanding Mr. Baggins of Bag End as someone of so dubious a career! It makes me wonder why Thorin, who was also of a high and noble character, was seeking such a disreputable person at the 14th member; sure one /might/ be useful but, as I believe is said in the book somewhere, he can hardly have expected to smuggle out the treasure piece by piece while Smaug slept on!

Author Reply: Bilbo the burglar... it is indeed an interesting thing to ponder. You might enjoy my short story "More than Meets the Eye", in which the Dwarves discuss this very subject. :)

Yes, the renowned Burglar Baggins, confounder of Dragons.

Halbarad will be fine, and hopefully Estel will accept being Aragorn again in a few days.

As for the puppies....

Author Reply: We're slowly moving toward resolution of all the loose ends! :D

Ah ha, I think Halbarad is finding out there is more to Bilbo then he thought, "burgler" Good idea for Halbarad to get a puppy for his girlfriend, a very good present.

Author Reply: Yes, these "simple hobbits of the Shire" are much more than they seem, aren't they? :D

Oh, I love the thought of Halbarad wanting a Scamp puppy!!! Too darling. And of course, I must say I do enjoy the very thought of Bilbo being saddled with TWO difficult patients . . . this is going to be good. Or at least, a very impatient hobbit lad and a rather groggy or hurting ranger . . . whatever it is, I'm guaranteed to love it.

I apologize for the lateness of this review . . . read it at my brother's and didn't review it then, and then remembered I hadn't! Slap me next time you see me, please. :)

Author Reply: Goodness, Lily, a review is never late. It arrives exactly when it means to! I'm so happy you're continuing to enjoy this. Sooooo happy. :D

i just love reading your chapters. each time you post, I cannot help but think what will take place next. I believe this is the calme chapter before the storm? Bilbo will have his hands full if both Frodo and Aragorn become hard to deal with and Scamp has her pups at the same time!

Author Reply: I think Bilbo does deserve a good night's sleep after all this, and you're right... who knows what he'll have to deal with next! But with all those loving Gamgees about, I suspect his job will be a lot easier. :D

Serindë might become the proud owner of a Scamp puppy??!!!! *grins and claps hands in delight*

>>He was startled to realize that it was evening already; lamps had been
lit throughout the smial, and small but cheery hearthfires were blazing in
several rooms.<<

Bag End just sounds so very warm and cozy. Do you think Bilbo would mind one more house guest?

I really like how you compared the Gaffer and Serindë ... now there would be an interesting meeting of minds. LOL!

>>“I know,” Bilbo said. “However, I suspect that the Gamgees will not
permit me to be alone very much! They are wonderful neighbors, and very
good friends.”<<

They are indeed. Bilbo and Frodo are so very fortunate to have such a loving and dedicated family of hobbits living nearby ... and the Gamgees are just as lucky to have them too.

>>“Halbarad,” Bilbo said suddenly, “should you encounter any resistance
or stubbornness from these Dwarves, tell them you are friend to the burglar
who accompanied Thorin Oakenshield on his journey. Tell them you respect
the King under the Mountain, then and now, and wish only good relations
with their people.”<<

Bilbo thinks of everything, doesn't he.

>>“Did you say ‘burglar’?”<<

Uh oh, I guess Halbarad has not heard the story of The Hobbit. He best settle in and get comfy for I suspect Bilbo is about to tell his tale.

As always, Shirebound, I eagerly look forward to more of this wonderful story.

Author Reply: Thank you for so many lovely comments! And Bilbo must be delighted to have a brand-new audience to hear about his Grand Adventure. Let's all settle down by the hearth and listen as he tells it....

:D

I loved the way Bilbo was able to advise Halbarad.I'm eager to see how Aragorn will be when he wakes up.

Author Reply: Yes, I think it's time we find out just how Aragorn (and Frodo) are doing.

*sound of furious typing* :D

Wonderful chapter, Janet! Bilbo's warning against the effect of dwarvish ale made me grin, and that he has suddenly becomsecret keeper the secret keeper of Halbarad's love interest is very sweet. Too sad that Halbarad' fate is painfully predictable. You have given him so much heart and soul that it is more than easy to love him.

Author Reply: It's wonderful to help to 'fill in' a character we know so little about from canon. For Halbarad to be Aragorn's 'lieutenant' in the War, he had to have been quite special.

I love that Serinde will get one of Scamp's pups :) And Bilbo was so wonderful in this conversation- wise and comforting and humorous. Can't wait for the next chapter!

Author Reply: I don't think Bilbo ever gets much of a chance to pass along his experience and knowledge to folks who need it! This must be very satisfying for him, as well as Halbarad. :D

Wonderful!

“Did you say ‘burglar’?”

LOL Like so many of your tales, this is exciting and gentle all at the same time :)

Author Reply: Thank you, Pearl. And I do love that line, as well! What a crazy day for Halbarad. :D
