Elf, Interrupted: Book One: Glorfindel Redux  by Fiondil 5 Review(s)

I love the way your story flows and the way you bring a bit of intrigue into it at different places. I have thoroughly enjoyed the last couple of chapters, but the one thing that really made me chuckle was the thought of Lord Namo changing the locks to keep the hoard of Elves out should they be killed. As I said before, the Valar are so much fun. Maybe we’ll get to meet them someday. You think?

Author Reply: Hi Tari. I'm glad you have been enjoying the last few chapters. The tournament was a lot of fun to write, not just the matches but the intrigue that was going on as well, and it only continues. It would be nice if we got a chance to meet the Valar (nice, but scary).

Excellent resolution. Don't know if I'll be able to read more tonight, as I must get to work. Was supposed to switch to day shift, but that's not happening as yet after all. So, it's on night shift I stay for the moment, at least. We'll see how things go.

Author Reply: Well, whenever you get a chance to read and review some more... the story's not going anywhere and neither am I. *grin* And so far you have actually left a comment for every chapter you've read except one, the one entitled "Friends in High Places", so you're doing pretty well. *grin*

"I ordered Lord Súlimondil to attend me last night. He did not show and I ordered his arrest. He resisted arrest." The spectators began whispering to one another at that -- Yeah, I bet that hasn’t happened too often.... On the other hand, they have a word for it, so this must not be the first case.

In the scene of Veryandur meeting Ingwë, I notice you refer to Veryandur as “child,” “elfling,” or even “ellon,” but never “boy.” Now, I’ve occasionally come across the notion in fanfic that *hobbits* didn’t use the terms “boy” or “girl” for their children -- that those words refered only to children of Men. [JRRT uses “lad” and “lass” occasionally for (usually) young hobbits, and once “hobbit-maid,” but mostly it’s the non-gender-specific “young hobbit” or “hobbit-children” or simply “children.” “Boys” is used for Bergil and his friends.] So what I want to know is, are you intentionally avoiding “boy” and “girl” for elflings, and if so, is there a canon reason? [Though it finally occurred to me to try Find, so I see there are a couple of cases where one of the Ainur addresses Glorfindel or Ingwion as “boy.”] Also, can you shed any light on the usage re. hobbits? [Now *there’s* a question you weren’t anticipating receiving in this chapter!]

I’m looking forward to seeing what becomes of the smirking spectators.

I wonder if Manwë has ever been introduced to a toy before?

"We are concerned that this tournament is dredging up memories for the Reborn that it would be better if they did not surface just yet." -- And three days left to go....

Mithlas, still fighting Cirion in the next list over, could see what was happening as well and with a decisive movement forced Cirion’s shield from him and landed a "killing" blow -- Very impressive! Quick-witted, decisive, and powerful. Obviously not a warrior to underestimate. [Taking a look at where he fits on the chart (Kitty has a list, I have a chart). Yes, he could be a semi-finalist. -- Though considering I always put the tinco-losers in the wrong spots when they move to the parma-list (please don’t bother explaining), I could be totally wrong about Mithlas’s chances.]

Author Reply: I don't recall using the term "boy" to refer to either Glorfindel or Ingwion, even by the Valar, however, I prefer to use "ellon" and "elleth" rather than "boy/man" or "girl/woman" for Elves. Strictly speaking these words are Sindarin but I have them being used by Quenya speakers because there are no attested version of these words in Quenya although the Sindarin forms are not incompatible with Quenya, so I use them. As to whether they are canon, all I can say is that "ellon" and "elleth" are from Tolkien, meaning, "male elf" and "elf-maid, female elf", respectively.

With respect to hobbits, I think that Tolkien merely wanted to differentiate between the children of Men and the children of Hobbits, to show that they are not the same species, though closely related, and each has their own way of designating genders. Just my opinion. Others may think otherwise or even have specific information about such things that I do not have since I'm not interested in hobbits, per se.

I'm sure Manwë (and Varda) took Veryandur introducing them to Narmollë in their stride. Stranger things have probably happened to the Elder King and the Elentári. *grin*

Mithlas does indeed stand a good chance of moving into the semi-final rounds depending on how well he does in the next round of fighting. We'll just have to wait and see.

Cool! (I know that's lame, but...) I am *so* glad you updated two chapters at once. This was quite a shock. I never expected this to happen.

I am so glad that Glorfindel and Sador are declared innocent so that all of Valinor knows it.

I am correct then that Haldir is now in the parma-list and shall fight Findarato in their match, right?

It sure was cute to see Veryandur introduce Narmolle to the High King and Queen.

Is the issue that the reborn are getting because of the tournament going to effect Finrod or Mithlas? I was just wondering because they are reborn, but they already sort of had their time to adjust.

Namarie!

Author Reply: Mithlas, of course, is not a Reborn elf, having come to Tol Eressëa under his own steam, so to speak. We first meet him experiencing the blood=trance so it's unlikely he would experience it again so soon. As for Firndo... that remains to be seen.

You are correct about Haldit. Had he not suffered the blood-trance he would have won the match (even Aladarion admits this), but as it is he will fight Finrod in the parma-list while Aldarion will advance to the next round of the tinco-list.

Ha, I knew it, the pin was for Námo!

Oh Fiondil, that was a great chapter! An exciting mix of drama and humor. The exchange between Artamirë and Glorfindel in the beginning was fun, as was Eönwë’s reaction. And I think I have to steal Veryandur away for a bit of cuddling. He’s so cute, introducing everyone, even the Elder King, to his stuffed toy and all that!

Ingwë’s speech was satisfying ; I hope certain people take it to heart. Though I somehow don’t truly believe it. Too many think themselves too smart to get caught.

Well, I had feared there would be happening something like what happened to Haldir. The fighting seems to trigger too many bad memories for the elves who fought in Beleriand. Luckily Aldarion didn’t get hurt, as there were so many around who knew at once what was going on and acted. But I don’t want to know what would happen if it was Glorfindel who ended up in this bloodlust – it would be difficult to overwhelm a fighter like him, particularly if he’s *truly* fighting ...

At least they worked out how to proceed now – it would have been sad if they had to disqualify Haldir. It was not his fault, after all. And I look forward to see him fight with Finrod.

Do you know there is something wrong with the update? It still shows up under the date of the 16th, when you posted the last time, instead of with the new date at the top of the first page of SoA. As I don’t use the notifications, I found it only by accident.

Author Reply: When I was updating last week I accidently clicked on "Publish" for this chapter instead of "Preview", as I wasn't ready to publish this chapter yet. That's why, I thin, the date shows last week's update. I have decided to post the next chapter (125) instead of waiting until later in the week so that the update will be current. Sorry for any confusion.

I figured that everyone would guess that Glorfindel's pin would be for Hámo. *grin* So no real surprises there.

As the intensity of the tournament increases I think you're going to find more such incidents of the Reborn, whether they are fighting ot not, increasing and that will be a concern for the Valar, especially Námo, who has a somewhat proprietary air over his former charges. We will see what effect, if any, such things will have on Glorfindel or Finrod in future chapters.
