Elf, Interrupted: Book One: Glorfindel Redux  by Fiondil 10 Review(s)

Oh Fiondil, Fiondil!
You are a writer after my own heart. AND you embroider.

It was you, and this story, that single-handedly got me to purchase the HoME books and begin reading. I’d tried tackling them before and just … argh! But with trying to read this story I KNEW I would have to tackle more than just the first two volumes.

I’m glad I did.

I inhaled this story. I read it so quickly I do not believe I came up for air more than a half dozen times. I read it so quickly I had to go back and read it again to capture what I missed the first time.

You brought these characters to life for me and for that, I thank you. I had always liked Glorfindel but getting to know your Finrod and the other characters brought smiles and warmth to my heart. They all fit together so well. This piece was a joy to read.

Thank you. You have given me, the reader, a wonderful gift. Not just in meeting your version of the Elves but also the Valar. A confusing bunch of names that I just could not decipher and you made it much easier. And who knew? Who knew that the Valar Death God was so awesome? *grins* As a fan of Death Gods, it’s always nice to meet one I did not expect or in a guise I never would have seen.

I thank you again. And look forward to reading your other pieces. You are, quite frankly and in my humble opinion, AWESOME!

Author Reply: Hello MikoNoNyte. I'm so glad you enjoyed this story and hope you enjoy my other stories as well. And I'm glad you have at last read the Histories. They are quite fascinating in their own right and I often draw on them for my Silmarillion-based stories because they sometimes provide added details that are missing from the published version. This is especially true for my story "Bound in Darkness". And if you like how I portray Námo in this series, you should check him out in the "Elf Academy" series and in my Ainur-only story "The Wars of the Valar".

Anyway, thank you for your lovely and quite unexpected review. It made my day.

I love all your stories, but I want to query something in the "Elf Interuppted" series. In book 1, you use the the name Olwen for Olwe's sister/Beleg's mother, but in book 2, Olwen is Olwe's daughter and Ingwion's betrothed. Is this just something you didn't notice, or is Olwe's daughter named after her aunt? Sorry, but this is confusing! I am a reader of the Elf Academy series, so maybe this can be addressed in one of Alex and Derek's history lessons? :)

Author Reply: Hello, Em. It can certainly be confusing with people having the same name, but yes, Olwë's daughter, Olwen, is named after the aunt (Olwë's sister) she never knew. I'm glad you have enjoyed all my stories, especially the Elf Academy series and I appreciate you taking the time to let me know. Thanks.

Well, as I finished Findarato's diary, I just had to read where he and Glorfindel met again in this tale... Then I couldn't stop reading.

So I have now completed my second reading of this tale and still Find it wondrous and fun and entertaining and very informative.

Now onto Elf II..... good grief! And I still have to read for the MEFAs!

Blessings!

Author Reply: Funny how these stories suck you right in, isn't it? *LOL* Glad you enjoyed this the second time around. And this is the best time to be re-reading the entire story because I will be finishing up Book 2 in a couple of weeks.

I know what you mean about the MEFAs. I keep saying to myself... as soon as I finish writing the last chapter of Elf, Interrupted.... *LOL*

Thanks for re-reading this and letting me know how much you enjoyed it, Agape. I really appreciate it.

That character list certainly is helpful!
There´s only one thing that´s confusing me: Macalaure´s Sindarin name Maglor is marked with the sign that would mean that he´s currently residing in Mandos... I´m pretty sure that in the Silmarillion he is said to be walking beside the waves singing in regret?

Author Reply: Hi Thalanee. Thanks for pointing out the error; it's been corrected. I'm glad the character list is proving helpful. When Rhyselle and I put it together we were both amazed at just how many characters there actually were! *grin*

Hi Fiondil,

Do you know what kind of music I am hearing? Of course not. How could you?

But after a long time I am looking throug some of my very old datas (dates)? Old stories and also old music.

And I found "A song for the lonley" from Cher.

And I found it absoluteley fitting: They are all - in one way or the other - lonley.

And I like it to hear to this song and imagine your story and I cannot expect Elf interrupted II.

Alwayw with you

Caddy

Author Reply: I don't know why you think these characters are all lonely. Most of them seem to have just the opposite problem. However, you won't have to wait too long for Book Two, only a few more weeks.

Whoo hoo! I printed the listing - many, many thanks. Now, to go back and reread over the Christmas break.

Thank you.

Book II won't be posted until early next year, possibly not until Spring,

You jest, do you not? spring is still...about four months away!

Though, I suppose I don't terribly mind the wait, because I love your writings and your characterizations.

This story was a wonderful, wonderful one. And now I think I shall reread it again.

For Beren's article, you typed 'pouse' instead of 'spouse.'

I thought that Ercasse was a member of Arafinwe's court because back in the chapter when the group from Tol Eressea is introduced to the royal family, since Amarie wasn't there at the event, Ercasse told her what happened.

Arafinwe's nickname when he was apprenticed to the Elder King is so cute!

Wasn't it Turacano, not Turucano?

I really like this character list. It makes it so much easier to remember all the characters!

Author Reply: Thanks for pointing out the typo for Beren and Turgon's Quenya name is Turúcano. Ercassë is a junior member of Arafinwë's court who is sent to Vanyamar as one of the young courtiers who are being fostered by Ingwë to learn from his court. Even though she is not yet of age (she's only 48 at the time), she's been "in training" for the last few years along with the others.

I'm glad you like the list. I just didn't realize just how many characters there really were. It's almost like a Russian novel. *grin*

Author Reply: And we're editing this even as we speak! Lots of errors neither of us caught the first or second time around. I'll pass on your thanks.

Hi Fiondil,
All I can say is wonderful, marvelous, the best yet. I couldn't wait to get to the next chapters. I can't wait to start on Book Two. I am eager to see what those two are going to do next. I am glad vorondil has those who are grauding him and showing him love. He has had a hard enough time already without other elves telling him he is worthless. His Mother needs a good shaking. Thank you again for your wonderful stories, I can't wait to see where you go from here.

Nancy

Author Reply: Thanks, Nancy! I'm glad you've enjoyed this tale, and of course, it ain't over! *grin* Many of the plot strands that have been left hanging in this book will be resolved in the next book.
