I love Sam! He's just so polite! Sometimes it's ever so amusing the way he adds Mr. to everyone in the fellowship.

Why, Theoden? Why did he have to kill you? Why did you have to die? *Sobs*

Author Reply: I love Sam, as well. He's such a dear and humble hobbit.

'... and he was still unscathed, and he was young, and he was king: the lord of a fell people.' Maybe my favorite line about Eomer in the books. Funny to compare their ages to the hobbits, who always seem young because of their innocence. But, I suppose Men grow up a bit faster than hobbits, too.

Enjoying!

Author Reply: It was interesting to learn that Eomer was so young, at least through hobbit eyes.

Lovely. You write beautifully, and I like the dialogue between the hobbits and Eomer. The "ceremony" was very... meaningful too, and your description of Rohan breathtaking. And now, I shall go to the next chapter!

Author Reply: Thank you, Violin Ghost!

I got this first chapter when you first posted it. But, I have been trying to be GOOD and limit my "time-wasting" on the computer lately. I see that this lovely story has been well received. Like others who have commented, I enjoyed Eomer's beautiful speeches that you have here. This is, after all, the man who called out poetry on the battlefield. Oral cultures have rich, beautiful spoken languages. Well done. I like one touch in the scene at the gates of Edoras. When The Three Hunters and Gandalf came the last time, Gandalf led them. But now is the beginning of the Age of Men. this is Eomer's kingdom, and Aragorn is here to show him tribute and respect. Gandalf stays sort of "back in the bunch" with the other leaders. Such a shining group, of course! But Gandalf's work is done. He stays in the background, and lets Eomer and Aragorn have center stage. I like your comments on the age differences. Eomer is, indeed, younger than Pippin. Merry and Sam are close to Farmir's age. Eowyn is enough younger than all of them that many stories i read give she and Merry an "older brother-younger sister relationship! (Now I have to make time to finish this!)

Author Reply: He stays in the background, and lets Eomer and Aragorn have center stage.

Exactly! Thank you for noticing that, demeter. The Age of Men has indeed begun, and no one knows that better than Gandalf. I'm very happy you're enjoying this.

Somehow I managed to miss this one. I've started reading it only today and I'm very glad to have found it. Your vivid use of detail makes me feel as if I am part of the company. I like the way you have included so many of our beloved characters in your story. It's great to see Frodo enjoying himself. I especially enjoyed the ceremony in which Aragorn asked permission of Eomer for the free people to enter. I'm off to read the next chapter.

Author Reply: Thank you, Althea. It's always a challenge to write a multi-character story, and to imagine all the interactions between them. I like to imagine that Aragorn would have shown respect and honor to Eomer in some public way.

The idea there are no written records must indeed by totally foreign to the likes of Frodo and Sam. Love their amazement and Sam's realization of the poetry of their speech rhythms. And love the formal entry into Edoras. Perfect!

Author Reply: Thank you! I never thought much before about the hobbits' (or anyone's) approach to Edoras, and I'm so glad it feels right.

Oh sweetie, what an entry! This story is very powerful and absolutely brilliant. You did a perfect job, my dear!

"“Théoden King lived nobly and died with honor, and will never be forgotten. "

"“You’re home, sir,” he whispered. “We’ve brought you home.”"

This made me shiver. What an amazing first chapter.
Go on this way! I'm soooo looking forward to more!
*hugs you very tightly*

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Julchen! I appreciate the hugs, and the enthusiasm. I'm hard at work on chapter 2. :D

yay! This looks to be a very intriguing story. I love all the details about Eomer becoming King and Merry's grief for Theoden. Nice beginning!

Author Reply: Thank you, Claudia! As you can imagine, it's *very* difficult to drag myself away from Frodo healing in favor of Merry healing, but Merry will be very glad his elder cousin is there to help him.

I've finally figured out how to resize this site so I can read it!

This is a most lovely story, and one that has not been told very much. Bearing Theoden back for burial, Merry's grief, Eomer's ascension, and most of all, the healing of all of them post-quest - all so important.

Eomer's explanation of "No books!" is poetic, proud and expansive, like the oral tradition of his people and due all respect.

I love the way you have Aragorn bring credibility to all by appealing formally to the new king to enter the city and having the people respond.

Above all, your power of story-telling would rival any Rohirric bard. Eloquent, simple and moving, every word is infused with your love of the story and the characters.

Author Reply: Oh my, thank you so much, Aprilkat. You always say the loveliest things!

I usually focus on Frodo (and sometimes Sam) needing the most healing, and I tried to slip a bit of post-Quest Pippin-healing into "Return to Rivendell" and "Shelter", but I think it's *finally* Merry's turn.

LilyReviewed Chapter: 1 on 1/15/2007
That's a great start. Poor Frodo must have been so shocked at the prospect of not seeing a single book :)
You also capture Eomer very well.

Author Reply: Thank you, Lily. It's nice to write Frodo being shocked by something non-life-threatening for a change! :D
