Poor Sam.

And since hobbits aren't adult until 33, he actually has the likelihood of having all 13 at home, aged between infancy and mid-tweens.

Whereas men, who send their kids off to labour and battle by 18, would have lost the first half-dozen by the time the last few arrived. Earlier, probably, if the girls went off into service at 12-14, as girls tended to do up to the First World War.

At last - a downside to being a hobbit! (Apart from the hairy feet. Just can't love hairy feet.)

Ah--the "It wasn't me who did it!" arguments. Yes, indeed--an excellent reason not to have thirteen children! Heh!
