Not Gonna Happens  by Larner 16 Review(s)

I just came across this: how wonderful! Death and Namo: match made in an eccentric little corner of literary paradise. I'm suddenly thinking I'd love to see Elrond meet Vetinari... :)

Author Reply: And what do you think Elrond would think of Leonardo de Quirm? Heh! Or Glorfindel meeting Ghengis Cohen and his Silver Horde? Much less Aragorn meeting Captain Carrot. I so have loved Pratchett's work over the years!

Glad you enjoyed this. It was fun to write!

Namarie, Sir Terry. Hara máriessë mi Mandos. :(

Rereading this ficlet in honour of a wonderful author and one of my favourites after Tolkien. I do think Discworld's Death and Lord Námo would have been more than passing acquaintances, and perhaps even good friends.

I can also see how Sam and especially Frodo wouldn't have been able to wait - I'm thinking the same for Sir Terry perhaps. Seven years, I think it's been, is long enough to deal with what amounts to a slow painful death, as it is. :(

Author Reply: From what I have read he did not wish to wait, but still in the end went naturally, and surrounded by those he loved, including his cat, who lay sleeping on his bed when Death cut the silver cord. At least he fought back against his condition by writing till the end. I will always treasure "Steam" because it was, apparently, his last work.

I suspect Death and Namo have both welcomed him happily, and that he is now lampooning even himself and setting God and His angels all to laughing!

One of my favorite Discworld characters :). So, Death knows both Namo and Earendil, then? I wonder who else in Middle- Earth he knows...

Author Reply: Death is one of my favorite Diskworld characters, too. And the Diskworld keeps intruding into my little crossovers, I find. And of course he'd know both Namo and Earendil! As for who else he might know--well, that's a topic for other stories along the way, of course! Heh!

*after catching breath from last chapter, is set off again*

Death is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE DISCWORLD CHARACTER. EVER. =D

"HAVE A NICE DEATH"...I love it!!!

Hmm, Death and Namo...professional interest? =)

Well done!!!!!!!

Kaylee

Author Reply: I have a hard time deciding between Death and Granny Weatherwax as my favorite character in Pratchett's world. And wouldn't Death and Namo have a slightly more than nodding acquaintance, don't you think? After all, if I can find Namo being friends with Santa Claus, why not these two? Thanks so!

Hahahaha! I haven't read the Diskworld but I can still appreciate this! Brilliant!

(Now I want to read them!)

Author Reply: I think my favorite characters in the Diskworld are Sam Vimes and his wife Sybil, Captain Carrot, Granny Weatherwax, and most of all Death. Death and Binky are so very delightful! Poor Death just can't quite deal with live folk, although he DOES try! I do think he would have very much liked Frodo and Sam.

I've never read Discworld, so some of this is lost on me,but I loved the powerful images you create.

Author Reply: Am so glad the images overwhelm the parts beyond your current reading, Linda. I think Death would so appreciate meeting Sam and Frodo, two unafraid of him.

Death and his pale horse Binky are two of my favourite characters in Discworld and this was a lovely story. Frodo would of course be ready and anywhere Frodo was going, Sam would be there too.

I'm glad Binky and his master enjoyed the dancing.

Author Reply: Binky is a wonder in himself. So glad you appreciate them as I do. And they deserve some acceptance and entertainment, don't you agree?

Thanks so!

What a wonderful ficlet! The characters are excellently portrayed; and Námo is always a treat whenever he shows up (although I'll admit being rather partial to him...)

Author Reply: I think many of us find ourselves appreciating Namo, particularly as Fiondil portrays him.

Larner, you are unique! As hilarious as this little vignette is, I couldn't help being deeply touched. If only I could produce updates half your speed. *sighs longingly* But, as you know, when I get a crossover idea, I must write a twenty-plus chapter monstrosity...

Anyway, I know nigh to nothing about Discworld - I do have a lexicon, which I bought to at least understand the hints I find all over the Net, but that's all - but in this case it wasn't really necessary. And Námo having a chat with Death was really funny. Talking shop much, eh? *grins*

Author Reply: I can write some things swiftly, while the current chapter of Stirring Rings is eking its way out of me sooooo sloooowwwlly! And I doubt anyone needs to have read any of the other books to appreciate Death here. And I think he and Namo would enjoy one another, although I suspect a visit to Death's home would about drive the Vala a bit crazy! You have to have read Mort and Soul Music to truly appreciate the idea, I suppose.

Walking in the Air by Celtic Woman fits here very nicely. How grand that our dear is dancing again and of course Sam would there with him! I hope to be as excited as he when it comes to accept the Gift. That was cute of Sam to be apologizing to Death.

Walking In The Air, Floating The Sky...
Floating In The Air...

We're Walking In The Air
We're Floating In The Moonlit Sky
The People Far Below Are Sleeping As We Fly

We're Holding Very Tight
I'm Riding In The Midnight Blue
I'm Finding I Can Fly So High Above With You

Far Across The World
The Villages Go By Like Trees
The Rivers And The Hills
The Forest And The Streams

Children Gaze Open Mouth
Taken By Surprise
Nobody Down Below Believes Their Eyes

We're Surfing In The Air
We're Swimming In The Frozen Sky
We're Drifting Over Icy
Mountains Floating By

Suddenly Swooping Low On An Ocean Deep
Arousing Of A Mighty Monster From Its Sleep

We're Walking In The Air
We're Dancing In The Midnight Sky
And Everyone Who Sees Us Greets Us As We Fly

Author Reply: It's a lovely poem and indeed a suitable tribute to my vision of Frodo's death and entrance to whatever comes next. Thank you!
