On the Wings of the Storm  by Lialathuveril 10 Review(s)

Excellent chapter! You've woven a great Eomer/Lothiriel tale by placing them together when Grima still had sway at Edoras. I've been trying to think of another way out for Lothiriel, and briefly thought of having her confess everything to Eomer and then they could pretend to have had an argument while secretly knowing that it was all an act. But everyone is so close at the Golden Hall, and Grima has spies, that it probably would not have worked -- and that's assuming Eomer could hold his temper and act a part! So I think that Lothiriel leaving is for the best at this time.

Goodness, you really know how to wrench our hearts!
There were a few expressions in this passage, which I felt were a bit cheesy:

“impulse to fling myself into his arms nearly”
“as if my heart was slowly being torn to shreds”
“his eyes burning with fury”

They don't seem to come up to the aesthetic standard that you've set with the rest of the story.

Author Reply: Clichés - the bane of a writer's life. I have to constantly remind myself to come up with something original, because my mind is lazy and goes for the easy option. Hmm, although since I'm in Lothiriel's mind, maybe I can claim that it's her fault. ;-)

Poor girl - and now Éomer must think that she gave to Théodred what she denied to him. Drat. But like her, I can't think of anything else she could have done to get herself - and Éomer - out of danger. Wasn't I supposed to Iron...?

Author Reply: Grima really is a swine, isn't he. But a very clever one, by adding this twist. As another reader said, he's playing with them as if they were pawns in a game of chess.

The email alert did not seem to work because I did not receive notication that you have posted a new chapter for this story. Good thing I looked around after Lady Bluejay posted hers.

Poor Eomer and Lothy! How sad to read about them getting hurt (Eomer most of all), I'm sure Eomer will tear Grima limb from limb when he finds out what really happened. I'm excited to find out how Eomer and Lothy will reconcile and live happily ever after.

Author Reply: Hello Whitewave,
like you said, Eomer will probably want to tear Grima limb from limb, but he actually won't find out until after Gandalf sends Grima packing (because I intend to stay within canon for this story), so he'll miss out on it.

And don't get too excited yet, it's going to take a while until they reconcile ;-)

P.S. the email alerts have not been working for me all the time either, but usually I post a chapter every 2 weeks or so.

This is such a sad and dramatic chapter.I really felt for poor Lothiriel, and for Eomer and Eowyn too. You conveyed the bleakness of Helm's Deep mirrored in her emotions brilliantly.

If you are using British spelling,as I noted you did with "honour", "draft" should be "draught". I think in Anglo Saxon the "gh" was like the German "ch" but somehow over the centuries became pronoched as "F"!

I think this story is my favourite amongst those I am currently reading.

Author Reply: Hello Linda,
yes, I think if Lothiriel had come to Helm's Deep in happier times she would have had an entirely different impression of the place. However, I live near the mountains and these deep valleys always give me a feeling of being coped in, especially in the winter when the sun is low. I imagine Lothiriel growing up by the sea would feel the same.

And I'm flattered to hear this is amongst your favourite stories!

Lia

P.S. you are of course right about the spelling, thanks!

To seek to keep him save by such a ruse must have been so distasteful to her!

Author Reply: Hello Larner,
it's horrible for her, but she's determined to keep him safe - at whatever cost to herself. And Grima is not finished with them yet either...

Lothiriel shouldn't have lied. It just made everything worse, I think, even if she did mean well. I pity poor Eowyn and Eomer. Eomer must feel devastated by Lothiriel's betrayal and Eowyn lost an ally. Please update soon! I enjoyed this a lot.

Author Reply: Hello Alqua,
well, it was a difficult choice for Lothiriel because very likely, if she had confronted Grima, Eomer would have ended up disgraced. In the end it leaves him free to pursue a certain orc band bearing important prisoners to Isengard...

But like you said, it's heartbreaking for all three concerned.

Ahhh, poor Lothiriel, Poor Eomer. Damn Grima. Excellent, as always. Your work is always such a pleasure to read. I just love you to pieces! I felt so sorry for Lotheriel, and I just can't wait to see how you turn this all around. Confrontations scenes are my faves!

Have a great week!

Galimeril ;D

Author Reply: Hello Galimeril,
well, there are a few more confrontation scenes coming up before we reach the resolution, so that should make you happy ;-) I'm afraid it will take quite a while until the mess that Lothiriel has just landed herself in will be resolved.

Ahh! This chapter made me so depressed! I want to kill Wormtongue! Look what he's done, Eowyn and Eomer are mad at Lothiriel. I hope that Lothiriel and Eomer make up before he becomes king, otherwise he might think she's a thronedigger.
Is she going to still be at Helm's Deep when the Battle for Helm's Deep occurs? I look in the Appendix and thats about three months off. There wouldn't really be any way for her to get home anyways.... Hmmm....
Can't wait for the next chapter!!

Author Reply: Hello Maria,
sorry for making you depressed! As you know the two will be overtaken by the events of the Ring War soon, so I'm afraid they don't really have much opportunity to make up.

And the Battle for Helm's Deep is little more than 2 months off, so yes, she will be there. Like you noted, she doesn't really have any way to get home.

Great, a new chapter! Well, is going to be so complicated now to clear the mess. I have thought that he will be hurt because her departure, but Grima has to get involve and everything got worse. Sorry for them, when he becomes King, he will think that she only cares for the crown. After the war, if she tries to reach him, Eomer will think that she only cares for the crown.

Thanks,

Author Reply: Hello Fantasia,
you are of course right. It will be extremely difficult for Lothiriel to convince Eomer that she's not just after his crown once he's king. And things might get even worse, for Grima is not quite finished with them...

Thanks for reviewing.
Lia
