Elf, Interrupted: Book Two: Glorfindel's Quest  by Fiondil 16 Review(s)
SunnyReviewed Chapter: 16 on 7/9/2008
Your subconscious at work? _My_ subconscious certainly seems to find a hammer with which to hit me over the head whenever it finds something it thinks is significant. Or whatever ;-)

Author Reply: I do not deny the possibility of my subconscious working overtime with my stories. *grin* However, I draw from so many different sources when writing it's hard to point to any one thing and say "Yes, this is where I drew my inspiration from". And, like I said, the symoblism of butterflies is apparently multi-cultural... many cultures (not just the Greek one which gave the butterfly the name Psyche) see them as symbols of soul-transformation and rightly so.

For some reason those butterflies make me think of a little jewel of a story fro Chinese classical literature:

One day about sunset, Zhuangzi dozed off and dreamed that he turned into a butterfly.

He flapped his wings and sure enough he was a butterfly...

What a joyful feeling as he fluttered about, he completely forgot that he was Zhuangzi.

Soon though, he realized that that proud butterfly was really Zhuangzi who dreamed he was a butterfly, or was it a butterfly who dreamed he was Zhuangzi!

Maybe Zhuangzi was the butterfly, and maybe the butterfly was Zhungzi? This is what is meant by the "transformation of things."

Is there a connection here?

Author Reply: While I've heard of this story, I was not thinking of it when I wrote this. Butterflies are symbols of transformation and in the West represent the soul, whether living, dying or dead. It is the only creature that changes its DNA structure completely from when its a caterpillar to when it becomes a butterfly. I think it's a very apt symbol then for the Reborn on several levels.

Thanks for pointing out the tale of Zhungzi, though. I'm sure other reviewers will find it interesting for it's connections with my story.

First off, let me say I'm glad Beleg was finally 'found' - and I loved how mesmerized he was with the butterflies! Still an elfling...

My heart went out to F & G - the thought that they might have to die again... Yikes! I could just see the two of them 'stepping back' from Namo!

I had to LOL when Aule was surprised that his pendant 'worked!' And I loved Finrod's reprimand of Sador... he knows his gwador well....

I loved F's comforting G when the younger Elf sugggested it would have been better for him to have stayed in Mandos....... very sad moment for both of them...

Poor Namo - having to SHOUT to be heard... having to 'deal' with Sador - and finally helping him calm down. I love the relationship Sador has already with Beleg... very nice indeed!

The tension was excellent as they all sat about trying to 'make' the pendant and the passage back to Valinor work... very nice!

Another cliff-hanger - you fiend...........

Author Reply: I don't think you have to be an elfling (or any kind of child) to be mesmerized by butterflies... I know I'm always mesmerized by them whenever I see them.

I'm sure F & G were both wondering how many Valar and Maiar they could take with them before they were 'killed'. lol It had to have been a scary thought. Luckily, it didn't come to that.

Námo was definitely in... er... Námo-mode when he had to deal with the very upset ellyn, especially Sador. Good thing none of them were stupid enough to protest or they would really have gotten the 'Mandos-treatment'. lol

Oh, c'mon... admit it... you just LOVE my dliff-hangers. lol Thanks for reviewing. I really enjoy reading your reviews.

Hmm. Got them home now. Hope in doing so they didn't slam the door in Beleg's hand or foot! Heh!

LOVE the butterflies again!

Author Reply: We'll find out just why Beleg is screaming in the next couple of chapters. Those butterflies just keep popping up unexpectedly. I have no say about it one way or the other. *grin*

Beleg - Beren: I don´t know why I mixed them up. At least they lived in the same age and in the same country. Do you think they rent the Royal Hunting Loge out? I really need a break from work. And it sounds like a nice, quiet and peacefull place. Well most of the time. I mean those times when there are no fighting or screaming elves.

I wonder how stupid Beleg felt when he said he followed the butterflies. It is a completely reasonable thing to do in his situation, but when you say things like that aloud it sounds stange. And talking butterflies non the less.

"If you think I’m going to re-embody these two again, you’re sorely mistaken."
That was not the best thing to say at that moment. No wonder that Glorfindel and Finrod get worried. Who wouldn´t?

Using the connection between Beleg and Sador as a leading rope to follow back. I like that thought and even more that the Valar gave them a shove. It´s a nice picture: the three elves in front of a door and some Valar behind them shoving them through. An all surrounded by butterflies.

Great chapter. I wonder in which kind of trouble they get next.

Author Reply: The names can get confusing at times especaily since they are so similar sounding...

I think Beleg probably wanted to crawl under a rock as soon as the words left his lips, in a manner of speaking, *lol*, but since neither Finrod nor Glorfindel made fun of him, I guess he decided it wasn't as stupid as it sounded.

I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter and thought it was great. As for trouble... it won't be too far behind these particular ellyn. They seem to collect trouble the way rugrats collect dirt. *lol*

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.

This chapter was definitely angsy. I wasn’t sure if the ellons would make it back or not. The sight of the butterflies must have been awesome. Will we ever find out what they signify? I have a feeling the Reborn are not out of the woods yet.

I’m so glad you didn’t make us wait until next week to find out that they had in fact returned.

Tari

Author Reply: Butterflies traditionally represent the soul, whether living, dying or dead. They also represent transformation and rebirth.

We'll see what effect all this will have on the Elves in the next couple of chapters.

Home, sweet home! But I guess that all the ramifications of this adventure are not over yet!

Author Reply: By no means are the over... there's still a lot more to come, so stay tuned.

Oooh! Wonderful chapter! I love all of the Valar here, but particularly how Orome gets to shine (although I wonder if Manwe will be having a discussion with him about not letting the rest of the Valar know about what he was planning once everything has been resolved). Namo and Orome's teamwork was just as much fun to read in this tale as it was in "Wars of the Valar".

I did snicker at Glorfindel's and Finrod's reactions when they thought that they'd have to die and go to Mandos in order to get out of the 10th Dimension. As if backing away would help if it were really necessary to do that!

The butterflies and Beleg make such a fantastic image in my mind. :) Oh, I wish I could draw that scene! Well, you know that I wish I could draw LOTS of scenes from your stories. :)

The return was spectacular and I think I'm glad the Orome took the ellyn to the hunting lodge to do this because I can just see the way everyone else would freak out had this occurred in Vanyamar.

In regards to Beleg's screaming... well, I just am not worried about it. Especially after remembering that not all screaming is a bad thing in this fic... I wonder Whose embrace our newest Reborn brother is awakening in... *grin*

Author Reply: Thanks, Rhyselle. I'm glad you liked the Valar in this chapter, especially Oromë. Not sure about Manwë taking him aside for a long talk, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did. *grin*

I doubt if Finrod and Glorfindel were thinking straight at that point when they thought perhaps they might have to die again and Námo deliberately ignoring them just made them even more fearful of their fate. Luckily, of course, they didn't have to resort to such drastic measures. *grin*

As for Beleg... well we'll see just whose embrace he's in soon ehough. *lol*

Thanks for reviewing. I really appreciate it.
