Elf, Interrupted: Book Two: Glorfindel's Quest  by Fiondil 12 Review(s)

Just a quick note; I had been curious about what scent Olórin would be "sporting" *g* for some time now, and asëa aranion is of course absolutely perfect! (Although I can't remember now what rosemary stands for - something with healing properties, was it?)

Author Reply: Rosemary oil is useful for bruises and wounds. It has also been used as to repel evil spirits and drive away bad dreams, so perhaps for someone like Olórin, especially in his guise as Gandalf, such properties would come in handy. *grin*

Just when things seem to be running smoothly, the Valar send a messenger to summon some of the Elves. It seems there must always an air of mystery around to keep the Elves on their toes.

One thing I do love though, is all the hugging going on all the time. I'd get along just fine with them because I love hugs.

Author Reply: Hi Tari. Well, the Valar do like to be mysterious. *grin* I'm glad you like the hugging. A hug goes a long way towards healing hurts and letting the other person know how much you care for them. Would that there was more hugging in the world; it might be a nicer place. Thanks for reading and reviewing.

Ingwion is marrying? Now that’s a surprise. After all, we haven’t even had Finrod’s wedding yet *grin* But I’m happy for Ingwion.

Glad to learn the next tournament is going to be held in Aewellond; in my eyes, it’s a sign that the various groups of Elves are growing closer to each other instead of separating themselves from the others as they did in the past. That road ought to be a great help, as it would shorten the journey and people wouldn’t have to rely on ships alone – which has to be a problem in winter.

Morcocáno as Sador’s deputy is certainly a surprise. Seems that guy has finally come to his senses and is showing his better qualities. Good. And of course, Meril will keep him in line *lol*

Ha, I wonder who has more fun with the training – Glorfindel or the Maiar?

Anyway, now I am wondering why they are all summoned this time. Can’t wait for the next update … hm, should be up later today, so I will probably know soon.

Oh, and I can *so* see Netilmirë ranting about her fellow guildmasters! And the end was fun. Certain Elves will never grow up completely, will they? (But then, who wants to be all grown up anyway – I certainly don’t!)

It seems you are beginning to tie up loose ends, and I have to admit, I dread the end of this tale. It was a part of my life for so long!

Author Reply: Hi Kitty. Yes, Ingwion will soon be marrying. We'll see something of how he and Olwen actually met in my Darkening story, which I plan to start posting two weeks from today (next week I will post a couple of new Loom stories as a sort of breather between this story and the Darkening story).

The road being built and the upcoming tournament are signs that Aewellond is beginning to see itself as part of Eldamar proper. In a way, Aewellond has been a test project of the Valar before they start opening up the South to colonization. Bringing Aewellond more closely into contact with the rest of Eldamar is the first step towards the Elves thinking of themselves as a single people rather than separate clans and kingdoms. Tol Eressëa is another case in point with the different groups of Elves living together with their common history of warfare in Beleriand (and now in the rest of Middle-earth). Until the Elves could prove that they could work together, the Valar were reluctant to open the rest of the continent to them.

And Morcocáno isn't really a bad guy, just tortured by what he experienced in Middle-earth. That he is now Lieutenant Governor of the island shows that there's more to him than meets the eye. Of course, Sador's no fool, so having Meril keep an eye on things is a wise move on his part. *grin*

As for who's having more fun with the training, Glorfindel or the Maiar, I'm sure both groups would insist that they are and be right. *LOL*

And I am indeed tying up loose ends, or as many as I can. Some, like Finrod and Amarië's wedding, I just could not include in this story, but hope to write about them in gapfillers, either short stories or multi-chapter stories on the order of "The Findaráto Diaries".

I know a lot of people (including me) will hate to see "Elf, Interrupted" end, but you knew it had to eventually. *grin* It's been a major part of my life for so long, more so than for the readers, since I've been writing this story nearly continuously for these last four years. It's been a great run and I've enjoyed every minute of it. At least you know that the Darkening story is coming up soon, so that's something to look forward to.

Thanks for reading and reviewing, Kitty. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to do so.

So the invited are Netilmírë, Arafinwë, Eärwen and Ingwion? And none of them will regret the journey? Interesting. What they have common? A husband and two sons still missing?
(Still struggling with certain images of the Elder King)

Author Reply: We'll find out just what they have in common soon enough, Serindë. Can't get that image out of your mind, huh? *evil grin*

Thanks for reading and reviewing.

I´m wondering what the Valar are planning now. To collect these elves on such a short notice.

Netilmírë´s ranting about her fellow guildmasters is funny even more so when asked about her dislike she is startled. Even if she has become more diplomatic, meaning she is not telling them to their faces how idiotic they are, in privete she is still the same. It´s good to see Sador so happy with his life and position and that Morcocáno has develovep as well as he has. I think at certain points in his life he would have sabotaged Sador to get the position as Cano himself.

And I´m happy that you will finally write about the Darkening after giving so many hints and remarks. And again in this chapter about Ingwion and his relationship to Olwen.

A story about Falmaron and Beleg and their mapping expedition to the South would also be interesting.

Author Reply: We'll find out what the Valar are up to soon enough, Hel.

I'm glad you found Netilmírë so funny. She'll never change, not compeletly, and that's what makes her so endearing. Sador, happily, has settled in his role as Cáno, and no doubt Morcocáno, seeing how competent he is, is happily supporting him, which is why he's now Lieutenant Governor.

The Darkening story will appear in a couple of weeks. I'm having my beta re-read the opening chapters to make sure they are perfect before I start posting. It won't be long now and I hope the wait will be worth it for you and my other readers. I've been working on the story off-and-on for the last year and a half and I am about 3/4 done with the tale.

A story about Falmaron and Beleg (and Vondo!) on their mapping expedition to the South does sound interesting, and we may even see it. Thanks for the suggestion. I appreciate it and I also appreciate you taking the time to read and review.

A good homecoming. Now--to find out just what is up among the Valar, and just why they want everybody to come visit!

Author Reply: And we will find out soon enough, Larner. Glad you enjoyed the homecoming. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it.

Good, I always wanted to see Glorfindel's friends reaction to his parting. At last, we know Finrod. I can picture them asking to everyone coming in a boat from Middle Earth for news..
I didn't remember the romance of Olwen and Ingwion, or any story.
I have been travelling and was behind in my reading, but I'm catching up now. Great chapters. Thank you

Author Reply: Hi Fantasia. The story about Ingwion and Olwen won't be found in "Elf, Interrupted", except obliquely. We will actually see it in my upcoming story about the Darkening, which is when the two met and began to fall in love. Circumstances drove them apart and they only renewed their relationship when they met again during the Winter Solstice Council in Valmar where Sador was chosen as Cáno.

Glad you like these chapters. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it.

Hm, looks like there is still a little more to this tale than we thought, just what do the Valar want now!?
Trust Glorfindel to get to the goodies first!
Bye the way is he any better at sailing now or does Falmaron still have to lay in the ginger cookies?
Sorry I am late with this, the 'Alarm Cat' didn't go off until nearly 7 this morning!
Huggs,
Lynda

Author Reply: Yes, Lynda, there is a little bit more to the tale, though not that much more. Next chapter will reveal what the Valar are up to. I suppose Falmaron needs to stock up on ginger cookies for Glorfindel, but only when the waters are rough. I think when there is smooth sailing, it's not so bad for him, but I don't think he will ever like sailing for the sake of sailing.

No problem about being late. Like Wizards, reviewers are never late, neither are they early: they review precisely when they mean to. *LOL* Glad you enjoyed this chapter, Lynda. Thanks for reading and reviewing.

think you got that thing at the beginning backwards, should be fate worse than death not death worse than fate unless you mean that marriage = death

Author Reply: No. Glorfindel deliberately reverses the saying, making it a joke, and he is not referring to Ingwion and Olwen's marriage but to Falmaron having to listen to all the wedding plans when he returns to Alqualondë. Go back and re-read that section and perhaps it will be clearer to you now.

This whole chapter made me smile!

Reunions indeed! Poor Glorfindel is still having seasickness issues? Or just discomfort being on the ship? However will he manage the trip back to Middle-earth? *grin*

You're really giving us teasers for The Darkening story in this, aren't you, with Falmaron trailing off when he mentions "circumstances" and Ingwion's name. I'm so glad that his relationship with Olwen has blossomed. And good for her for insisting on getting married sooner than Finrod and Amarie. Every bride deserves to be the center of attention on her special day. :)

I love the description of the matured Sador. There's a lot of interesting potential for short filler stories on Tol Eressea during this 5-year gap between the last chapter and this one. Maybe more tales from Vaire's loom, hmmm?

The idea of a road to connect Aewellond with the rest of Eldamar is wonderful. Shades of the first transcontinental railway in North America though: Start at each end and meet in the middle. I do hope that the Elven surveyors are able to be a bit more precise in guiding their ends of the project so they line up properly! *grin*

So Vondo is slowly being trained to accept and follow orders of those in authority over him... Proof that even frustration can have a positive effect on certain people! Regarding his oath to not leave Lorien without permission, has he subsequently caused Eonwe to remark that he needs to bind a new Book of Oaths? I'd think that he might need a Book just for Glorfindel and Vondo now! LOL!

The whole chapter was great, but I LOVED the last bit! “Well, I guess that’s just more dessert for us, then.” Hee! I could just see them charging for the dessert table!

It's a bit sad to see the story winding down, but it has been four whole years since you shared your initial vision of Glorfindel's arrival in Mandos, and with updates so frequent that we are all spoiled by them, it's been a great ride! If you ever have days when you wonder if anything you do is making a difference, please know that your writing this story has helped me through difficult days and frustrating times. Even the hardest parts of Glorfindel's re-adjustment to his new life helped me, as did the laughter that other parts of the story elicited.

A continuing "Well Done!" to you, my friend! :)

Author Reply: Hi Ryhselle. I'm not sure if he has suffering from seasickness as much as he used to, but I think he just hates being on a ship. Some people just like to have solid earth under the feet at all times. *grin*

And yes, this and the next chapter are really teasers for the upcoming Darkening story, which I will begin posting at the end of the month. And, of course, there is a lot of potential for gapfiller stories here as well. I actually do hope to write shorter companion pieces, similar to 'The Findaráto Diaries', about Glorfindel, et al. before he leaves for Middle-earth, as I'm sure there are plenty of stories to tell of Glorfindel's soujourn in Aman. We have, for instance, Finrod and Amarië's wedding. I hope to write about that eventually.

As for the road, I have no doubt that the surveyors are more precise than those who worked on the transcontinental railway. They are elves, after all, and they probably have gotten some help from Lord Aulë and his Maiar. *grin*

Not sure if Eönwë needed another Book of Oaths just for Vondo, but between him and Glorfindel, I'm sure Eönwë has been kept busy. *grin* Vondo is a bit more reckless than even Glorfindel, hence the need to keep in Lórien and being trained to accept authority and not go off on his own. That's how he happened to get killed in the first place. The mapping trip to the South will mature him, though, and once he returns, he won't be going back to Lórien but will be able to rejoin his parents in Tirion.

It has indeed been a wonderful four years writing this story and I thank you for your words of gratitude and encouragement. I appreciate them more than you can ever know. I hope my stories will continue to uplift you as well as entertain you, especially on those days when life hasn't been too kind. Thanks also for all your reviews. I have always enjoyed them and look forward to them.
