Holding Back the Flood  by shirebound 17 Review(s)
Gentle HobbitReviewed Chapter: 4 on 5/11/2009
Oh my... Even though I know you don't like it, you seem to be very good at describing or hinting at malevolence. I found this chapter rather creepy in places.

Poor Frodo! I hope he will have enough time to get out and have the stalagtite fragment removed safely. Yay for Merry--a most practical and valiant hobbit!

Author Reply: It's very creepy to try to understand malevolent intent; I only bear it because of the opportunities it presents for hobbit healing and comfort! :)

Looks like the Wraiths have under-estimated Frodo again and they didn't count on Merry either. I love the way you write suspense.
I also love your Elrond. This part:

(Elrond stood very still, the ring on his hand growing heavy and pulsing with purpose.)

I could feel his tension in this and sense the power that he has. Great chapter!

Author Reply: Thank you! Yes, those wraiths simply can't conceive of any power greater than their own, or that of their Master's. Silly things.

Oh my---I am cringing in pain for sweet Frodo here!! I have to say, a splinter of rock in his leg is one of the *best* injuries you've inflicted on the poor thing---very, VERY creative!!!

I'm so looking forward to seeing how the rest of this plays out. You wouldn't believe how I'm missing stories that feature most of the Fellowship characters together in turmoil. Few people seem to write that anymore.

Author Reply: LOL, thank you! It's getting to be a challenge to come up with creative injuries! :)

Awesome chapter! I really enjoyed all bits of it. I liked the excitement of the crashing of the cave-- it was fascinating and exciting to read that part because the action you write is so vivid.
Also really like the wraith's thoughts--- how chilling! You do a great job with villains, SB!
::going to read the next chapter:

Author Reply: Thanks so much! I can only handle villainous thoughts every few years, though. Eeeee, they're creepy.

My favorite part of this suspenseful chapter is Elrond's reaction. Your writing shows his strength and discipline; there are glimpses here, of the deadly warrior he must have been during the battles of the Last Alliance.

Author Reply: Oh my, thank you. Elrond's status as wise Elf-lord and powerful Guardian is such a fascinating area to explore.

Oh--this is too bad, that once again Frodo bears a Morgul shard! Now, to get it out and save Sam, Gimli, and Legolas.

And our stubborn Frodo is intent on doing just that, all by himself if need be!

Author Reply: Yes, there are many rescues to be done, and little time to accomplish them!

Eeek! Frodo hurt - but not too critically. Good thing Merry moved so quickly. Really, what was that wraith thinking? That rock would have crushed Frodo to death. But now Sam and Legolas are trapped, with the river about to flood the cave! Elrond is still recuperating from making the flood at Bruinen and to try to hold back this flood will tax him greatly. And where's Gimli? *worries*

Author Reply: Eeek! Where ring-bearers go, trouble follows!

Yes, the wraiths have become a bit too comfortable with their Captain (or Dark Lord) doing all the thinking for them. This one was strong on intention, weak with follow-through. :)

Yay for brave Merry, and I love his hobbity 'that's what cousins are for'. But poor Frodo. (Although I know you will give him lots and lots and lots of comfort!) Not just his injury, but his fears for Sam and Legolas. And our fears, too. I hope the next chapter isn't too far off!!

Author Reply: Comfort 'R Us, you better believe it! :)

Aha! A call to action if ever there was one! I'm looking forward to seeing where you're going with this.

Author Reply: Thank you! I know where we're going, just... not all the details of how we're going to get there. What fun.

Wow, this is an awesome chapter! So suspenseful and action-packed, and eeee, Frodo's hurt! Is this related to the h/c you mentioned? *salivates*

Gracious, it looks to me like there's a lot of trouble ahead for everyone. I'm very impressed with how evil your Nazgul is---I'm getting the shivers reading it.

Can't wait for the next chapter!

Author Reply: Heeee, there will be plenty of h/c to go around, and of course what would be the point unless Frodo was smack in the middle of it?

Nasssty Nazgul. Serves him right for continually underestimating hobbits.

Thank you so much for reading! :)
