Trotter  by Dreamflower 7 Review(s)

Oh Dreamflower, I love Trotter's homecoming - for that is what it is, coming back to his adopted home, and his family, including Thorn. It always amazes me whenever the huge age difference between Arathorn and Gilraen is pointed out, but you did an excellent job of illustrating it here, that's for sure LOL! I hope Oriel and Nethon will be happy, too!

I am so glad that Hildifons was able to return to his friends again. It is good to see him happy.

Good to see Trotter doing better - clunky noisemakers aside - and making a life for himself in Two Rivers. He adjusted to his injuries well, and having others in similar situations as himself allows him to feel normal about it. And Gilraen - they needn't worry about Thorn for too much longer. ;)

Author Reply: Hobbits, I think, are pretty resilient and adaptable creatures. And you are right-- in Two Rivers he has others who are also the veterans of battle injuries to keep him company.

Yep. Althogh she has some growing to do...

A good logical point, that you can't really be a sneaky ranger with clopping shoes. Though it rather saddens me that it appears that he's not going to end up heading into Bree in this condition. I was hoping for some pure confluence with the earlier draft.

I'm glad to see Trotter refinding his place here, and the reconciliation with Arathorn.

Author Reply: Well, he was never meant to be an exact replica of his inspiration. But I confess I did give some thought to his having at least one brief foray to Bree during his years with the shoes. Alas, writing to a deadline meant I had to abandon some ideas.

He will find his place. And Arathorn is more to blame in his own eyes, than he was in Trotters', so it was a matter of him realizing that the hobbit truly wished him to let go of his guilt.

He is healing and have carved a new road for himself - very good. Forgot to mention liked the mention of the hobbit archers in last chapter and nice to Glorfindel again.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: I thought it a good idea to have Glorfindel tell him of their fate, as a way of honoring him.

So, now that our Trotter learned to use his "wooden shoes" (and found them useful), he decided to return to Two Rivers, which is a very understandable decision, for in Rivendell he would have become bored and eventually moody.
He's the type of hobbit who needs something to do, to make himself useful (I think that was even the name of one of your chapter titles). And in Two Rivers he *is* needed.

I had to smile when I read the he became the new teacher. Obviously he changed his opinion ;-)

I'm glad that Thorn got rid of his feeling of guilt. It would have destroyed his life.

And, as Larner pointed out, he learned patience! For it will still be a long time until he takes Gilraen for his wife. His parent's are already a little uneasy about his hesitance!

Author Reply: Yes, I think at this stage of his life-- the prime of life for a hobbit-- he would not appreciate as much the peace and quiet of Rivendell once he had recovered.

He is needed. And I think he saw the sense in the Rangers' schooling customs (although I am also sure he would not find them proper for *hobbits*!)

It's likely a tinge of guilt remained, but at least he was able to channel it into learning the lessons needed to be a good leader, and to not allow it to destroy his friendship with Trotter.

*grin* Yes, he's going to be waiting awhile for little Gilraen to grow up! LOL!

And so Thorn begins to learn wisdom and patience--two most necessary attributes of future leaders. And at last his future bride is born, although neither might know it at the moment! Heh!

And Trotter now has a home and duties. Good.

Author Reply: No, I think that marriage is the last thing on Gilraen's mind right now, LOL!

He does. He would not be happy without them.
