Spoiling Nice Fish  by Narya 5 Review(s)
CeleritasReviewed Chapter: 1 on 5/19/2009
This was really well written, especially the shifting viewpoints and the characterization of Gollum as one person, really--only very changed over the years. The imagery of catching the rabbit at the end was sickeningly good.

Author Reply: Thank you so much! I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you, I've had a chaotic few days. I'm really glad you enjoyed it.

Good one! Yes, smells and memories are closely conected. Poor Smeagol.

Author Reply: Thank you! Yes, that's very true about smells and memories - they can take you right back. Thank you for the review!

Very well done! You did an excellent job of getting into Gollum/Smeagol's head, and I really liked the flashback bits. Kind of gives you an idea of the the kind of environment that he came from and how his broken psyche perceived what his family would say and do to him....

Not an excuse for what he became when he found the Ring, but it certainly gives you a good idea of just why the Ring could take hold of him so quickly and easily.

Again, well done!

Author Reply: Oh, thank you, Rhyselle! Yes, I've always been fascinated by Gollum/Smeagol as a character. Glad you thought I got him right!

Frodo and Sam bring back Smeagol a bit, if only a little. Poor lad--grease on his britches and his grandmother upset with him! But then he smells the living rabbit and Gollum is back....

Very nicely done.

Author Reply: Thanks, Larner! Glad you liked it :-) yes, that was the idea - the smell of living flesh brought his darker side back into dominance.

Oh! Food and smells can evoke memories even long buried! And I remember in The Hobbit, when Bilbo posed his riddle about the "golden treasure without key or lid" (paraphrasing a bit) how it brought up Gollum's memory of his grandmother, and teaching her to "suck eggs".

Very nice! We don't often see stories in Gollum's POV.

Author Reply: Thank you Dreamflower! Yes, it's a shame we don't see more fics from Gollum's POV; he's a fascinating character, though difficult to get to grips with. Thank you for reviewing :-)
