Elf Academy  by Fiondil 14 Review(s)
AndrandirielReviewed Chapter: 2 on 2/14/2014
Okay, can we just talk about Glorfindel having a mini-van? And everyone being totally in awe of him and getting all stuttery? And just... ELF ROAD TRIP TO ALASKA! That'd be a fun fic in and of itself.

THEIR ROOMMATES ARE ALL SO CUTE! I'm... curious to see if Mithrellas gets over herself and starts becoming less willfully ignorant about all things mortal. Doesn't seem likely, but I guess nothing's impossible. I also kind of want Jud to be friends with the twins.

I very much look forward to whatever epic, half-million-word monstrosity this story turns into (or rather, discovering what it has already turned into without my knowledge)

-Andie

Author Reply: Hi Andie. What can I say? Glorfindel is modern and he's cool. LOL! As for Misty, she's putting on an act, I think. After all, she's been hanging out in the mortal world for ages now. Glad you think the roomies are so cute, and yes, you can be sure that Jud will be friends with the Twins. I'm glad you are looking forward to reading more. Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. It's very much appreciated.

Finally got back to this chapter, Atto...sorry, I was out with my friend Michelle. So here our intrepid heroes (lol) get settled into their new rooms, with a rather odd set of roommates. I think I like Zach best, though I like all of them. Hmm, what would "Loren" do if he actually met some northern Italians? I wonder what the sequel has in store...well, whatever it is, it will be brilliant. Guren bed enni.

Tye-melin, Atto.

Kaylee

Author Reply: No need to apologize, Kaylee. It's important to be with friends. There's no rush to read or comment on this story since you already have. I think Zach is my favorite of the OCs in this story, too, although all the others have their charms. And "Loren" probably has met northern Italians in his long life. *grin* As for the sequel... you'll just have to wait and see. *grin* Tye-melin.

Ahahaha! Hilarious! Well, there were some serious moments, and one or two of them took me off guard, but the blending was perfect. I am glad to have finally glimpsed the past lives of the Elves - or most of them, at any rate. I still wonder what made Daeron meet the others... Hmm. Will it be answered in the next chapters?

I like all the names, and they are very easy to track down to the individuals, if you know where and what to look. Smart, for such a disguise; hidden in plain sight. The roommates of the four Elves made me smile and laugh; they were very unique, and somehow the Elves were paired with people from the opposite personalities. Very clever of you! *grin* That made the interaction all the more interesting. The way each encounter was told - parallel and rather similar one to another - dampened the effect a bit, but aside from that I enjoyed that part just as well as others. The encounters at the reception booths did not affect my opinion as much because they were really short.

Speaking of interactions, though, why did the twins obey Glorfindel to such degree? They were the sons of Elrond, an Elven-lord in his own right. (I love their last, cheeky remark, by the way - Even in such a serious situation... *roll eyes*) The way the people from opposite genders (respectively) gawked at them gave me a good time of snickering, though. Can't wait to see how the roommates would react to the "friends" of each Elf... And seeing that the twins apparently loved their game of seeing-double, and their notoriaty regarding jokes...

I think I saw several odd sentences, but I did not really pay attention to those, seeing how this chapter was longer and full of action. (I admit to a bit of boredom last chapter...) There were a few words I would not have connected to the Elves too... such as "tyring" (regarding the journey to the college site) and "tumbled" (when the mini-van had been parked). I assume it was more for the sake of the humor?

I love your descriptions of the college site and buildings, and even when the Elves had not reached there. The descriptions were simple but quite life-like; vivid - made me feel as though I were there. If this continues - and I believe it will - ... Wow. Just wow. The execution of the roommates' personalities were great too.

The little facts - such as the Elves' enjoying a treat in McDonald's - made me guffaw. They were unexpected, despite the notion that they had been living like mortals for quite a long time. I guess I am still assimilating with the general idea of the Firstborn blending in with the *modern* Secondborn... What year was it, by the way? The present or recent year? Or back a few years? I guess, from the presence of the MP3 player, it could not have been too far back... (By the way, was the poster above Shane's head the explotion of an atomic bomb?) Well, and I am still acquainting myself with the notion of Daeron being an online researcher, even for just a time and spurred by an occasion... That still seems bizarre, somehow.
Now, on to the next chapter. (Ah... And to think that there are plenty more...)

- Rey

Author Reply: The first chapter was something of a prologue so it was rather short. All the other chapters are much longer as you will see for we have to cover quite a bit of territory to tell the story completely within the holiday season. I am glad you liked the descriptions of the college and all. I figured most people who have been to college would fill in the blanks with their own memories of what a college campus generally looks like.

As for the twins' obeying Glorfindel. Elf-lords they may be, but Glorfindel is still their senior and their captain and that will never change.

This story actually takes place in the present year. I used the calendar to determine days of the week and such. And yes, the poster is that of the atomic bomb.

Thanks for reviewing, Rey. I appreciate it.

Why wouldn’t they be accepted? They’re Elves, and in my opinion, far more qualified to receive scholarships. There isn’t one mortal who could come close to their abilities no matter what they were doing. As far as Glorfindel working in a grocery store goes, I wish my local store had someone like him. What a wonderful surprise that would be. (Sighs)

Their first meal should be most interesting. Each one, except the twins, is bringing a room mate. I can’t wait to see how that plays out.

It’s a good thing your Elves aren’t as tall as Tolkien’s which I think was between 8’ and 9’. I don’t think the poor humans could handle it well at all, but it sure would be fun to see the looks on their faces.

Author Reply: As far as I know, Tolkien's elves were not 8 or 9 feet. They were usually between 6.5 to 7 feet and there are plenty of mortals just as tall (and taller!).

At any rate, you're the first to mention Glorfindel bagging groceries. *grin* I thought the image of him in a white shirt and black bow tie saying 'Paper or plastic?' just too hysterical not to put it in. Glad you liked it.

That's definitely not the story to dawdle with my reviews – already three behind ... :(

Some of their mortal names are quite appropriate, you know. Misty Grey and Darren Harper, indeed! And of course, I ended up giggling about the reactions they got from Cassie and Matt, though I would probably not have been any better. They have to be the most beautiful students to ever grace that Academy.

Now I can symphatise with Patrice Austin – guessing where names come from is something I like to do, too. Though I do it more in private ;)

That's an interesting mix of roommates. I think I like particularly Zach and Lily. Will be fun to watch how they get along.

Author Reply: As this is a holiday giftfic, I need to have the story posted in its entirety by the end of the holiday season. The last chapter will be posted on Epiphany, so you can do the math to figure out how many chapters this story is.

At any rate, I am glad you like Zach and Lily. We will see how everyone gets along as the story progreses. Thanks for reviewing. I really appreciate it.

This should be quite interesting for the six of them.

Author Reply: Glad you think so, Larner.

What an interesting assortment of roomies they have! I pity them, but I'm not sure who should be pitied more - the mortals or the elves! I can't wait to read more!

Author Reply: They are an interesting bunch, that's for sure. As to who should be more pitied... I guess that remains to be seen. *grin*

Well they have made it to Northern Lights and seem to be settling in O.K.
I see Glorfindel still keeps the Twins on a tight rein, a good idea seeing the kind of trouble those two mischief makers could get into!
Interesting mix of room mates!
More please,
Lynda

Author Reply: The twins are a handful even at the best of times and Glorfindel has had a great deal of practice. I found the mix of roomies interesting also. We will see how they and the Elves deal with one another as time goes by.

*giggle* I really enjoyed this chapter.

It brought back some memories of my first attempt at college when I lived in a dorm (the second time around I was married with kids so that made me an automatic comumuter).

I rather think that Glorfindel's and the rest of the Elves' appearances might end up being a bit of a distraction when they are in class. I know that I would most definitely be distracted! LOL!

I look forward to the rest of this lovely Christmas present, one chapter at a time!

And I hope that your Thanksgiving Day was lovely, even if you didn't "celebrate" it the same way over where you are as you might here in the States. Bless!

Author Reply: Thanks, Rhyselle. I am glad to know you are enjoying this story and are looking forward to reading the rest. My Thanksgiving was spent cleaning stalls with Reinhilde. *LOL* But we had a nice dinner consisting of homemade pumpkin soup in which you cut up something that is like a very long and thin hotdog into the soup. This was followed by waffles with hot cherry sauce and whipped cream. Hmmmmm.... Hope your Thanksgiving was just as lovely.

So our Elves meet their new roomies. I do have an at least slightly similar experiance myself. And _I_ was definitely the weirdo in that situation ;-) No wonder – I grew up far away from even the flyspecks on a map, and my dad was a New Ager before that term was even invented... and “that situation” was officers’ school...( of all the things you didn’t know about your buddies... ;-) )

Hmmmm ... I suspect that each of the Elves will be getting a roommate that is likely to drive him/her crazy.

I almost find myself being sorry about Glorfindel. Hei is getting a scared little mouse of a roommate. roommate Glorfy really deserves someone who is deeply into Zen. Talk about being in an intense swordfight with a patch of fog!! ;-) (Sez me, whose xmas present to myself will be _Quantum Physics for Dummies_ ;-) )
At least I suspect young Zack may develop a spine – much to the consternation of his mom and dad!

Author Reply: I think you are being too hard on poor Zach. He is just very shy given his speech impediment. I think Glorfi will be good for him as will the other Elves. We will see in subsequent chapters how things work out for everyone.
