Elf Academy  by Fiondil 11 Review(s)

Poor Glorfi, Atto! I am sure he did not expect to be playing nursemaid to these two for this long, lol! Well, at least the twins passed out before they got to verse 31! Though the ellith were rather unhelpful...they were encouraging the twins, if anything! Anyway, time for me (and the twins, I expect) to sleep. Tye-melin!

Kaylee

Author Reply: Yes, poor Glorfi, indeed. And this is probably not the first time he's had to tuck them into bed after a night out. *grin*. Tye-melin.

Oomph. I wish you would just put the translation to the sentences after the Sindarin ones... I travelled to the bottom two times just to get the translated sentences. Anyway, there were some English (I think so) terms I do not know... What did you mean by "cola lights"? And "quad?" Why did you categorise rootbeer as beverage for people of age? (21, I suppose?) Here it is consumed by people of any age... Oh, and on the topic of alcoholic drinks, how could the twins, despite their Half-Elven heritage, go drunk on beer? I thought that beer was too 'light' for one to be drunk, unlike ale or wine or wiskey...

The moments in which the Elves' disguises were nearly uncovered complimented the chapter nicely. However, I still thought that they were experienced enough not to be caught like that... I half-expected someone to know Welsh enough to comment on the language too. It would have been funnier if the Elves were a bit alarmed about the near-discovery, but I guess it would not have been good for them.

The spacial descriptions in this chapter were vaguer than in the last chapter, but no less good. The interaction between the various people with their Elven counterparts was interesting, to say the least. I wonder, though, what were Daeron and Glorfindel wary about in the beginning of the chapter. I think it had something to do with pranking or joking, but have no real idea aside from that. But by the way, were Cassie and Matt staff of the college? Or former students? They blended in with the new students too perfectly to be someone like Marian... (Oowh. The introduction of the three people on the stage was the most 'delicious' of all; I spent some time wondering about the classes and what kind of disaster the Elves could, and probably would, pull in them... *grin*)

Here Glorfindel's role as a leader could be felt most sharply. It was great, in a way, although I wish Daeron's nack of music got the same recognition. That would have been pretty fun. I spent a good time imagining about the band and their personell. :) I thought that such lively songs were meant to be accompanied by solo dances, though, not duets... I wonder what Daeron was writing down in his music note. Will it come up in later chapters? (And speaking of songs, you somehow managed to smuggle that infamous, illusive song into yet another story, eh?*grin* Would be nice if you could show us what the verses were actually like some time.)

Well, now I am going to take a nap, because I kept yawning while reading. (Not that the story so far was not entertaining in the least.) Hopefully I will be back tonight to pick up where I left. *grin* 7 more chapters to go! (And perhaps 7 various social 'disasters' and nick-nacks to laugh at...)

- Rey

Author Reply: I did not categorize rootbeer with alcohol, I simply stated that Glorfindel chose to drink rootbeer rather than actual beer. And cola light is what they call diet coke here in Germany. As for the twins getting drunk.... they certainly would have to consume quite a bit of beer to do so but it can be done. And I wonder if you asked anyone you know if they know any Welsh how many would start spouting the language to your face. *grin* In the hinterland of Alaska, I think the Elves were safe enough in that regard.

Atar Fiondil,

I've been reading as the chapters are posted. Just catching up on reviews.

Oh sweet Valar, this was hysterical! I can't believe the twins actually got drunk...and here again is the (in)famous "The Elf and the Fruit Vendor"!

And of course verse thirty-one! Which has something to do with turnips, lol. Oh well, we'll get it out of your Muse someday...maybe...

Considering your Muse appears to be Lord Namo, he must know the song very, VERY well and is just not telling you.

*considers said conversation with Lord Namo*

*Kaylee goes up to Lord Namo, not really afraid of him because he's not (usually) as scary as he's painted* My Lord, would you mind teaching your Mortal admirers the words to verse thirty-one?

*Namo raises eyebrow at Kaylee and other Mortal friends and says nothing*

Hm, yes, he says nothing, Atar Fiondil. Maybe Varda told him not to tell. *pouts*

Tye-melin,

Kaylee!

Author Reply: Hi, Kaylee. Considering that most of the song is pretty much X-rated, I doubt it will ever be published on this or any other site. *grin*

What a brilliant and hilarious concept - Elves pretending to be mortals pretending to be elves! Not to mention my favourite Elf driving a mini-van and packing groceries *sigh* Wish someone like Glorfi would pack my groceries!

Sounds as though the Twins and Merry and Pippin studied at the mischief-making academy at some point. And verse 31 eh? In one of my stories it was verse 71 of a song called 'Nineteen Nights in Nobottle' which caused all the trouble, but that was a hobbity song. I think I can imagine what it may have been about. ;-)

I shall now go and read the rest.

Author Reply: Hi, Baggins Babe. I am so glad you found this story and you are enjoying it. I thought it was a hilarious premise myself and have been having a lot of fun with it as later chapters will show. "The Elf and the Fruit Vendor" made its first appearance in Book One of Elf, Interrupted where we learn that verse 31 is Varda's favorite verse. *grin* At any rate, thanks for reviewing. I really appreciate it.

Hm ... what the elves said about losing their jobs left me thinking that it sounds just like the sort of interference I am used to from the Valar in EI. Now you have me wondering if it was really coincidence or if there's some higher power in the game, too.

So Shane is already suspicious? Now you have me wondering – do the Tolkien books exist in this AU? What if one of their new classmates has read them and draws the right conclusions? *grin*

Now these courses sound to be fun. Elf Etiquette? That makes me think about manners at the High King's court. Pettingill's course should be quite easy for the Elves, considering how much times particularly Glorfindel and the twins must have spent outside at all times of year. Not to mention the Helcaraxë ...

Um ... how was that about 'not drawing attention' to the Elves? Getting drunk and dancing on the table isn't falling in that category, I'd say. And singing 'The Elf and the Fruit Vendor' even less. Oh well, at least in that setting we can be reasonably sure that there's no hope danger that Varda is going to turn up to sing verse thirty-one *grin*

Author Reply: In this AU Tolkien's books do not exist.

As for the Elves losing their jobs.... whether just coincidence or something more will be revealed in time.

The courses that are described in this story are based on actual courses at the Finnish Elf Academy mentioned in the newspaper articles. I tried to get more details as to what they entailed but did not have much luck, so much (though not all) of what I describe for these courses are from my own imagination.

As for not drawing attention to themselves... we will see just how successful they are in that regard. Some, I think, will be more successful than others. *grin*

And just why is it that verse thirty-one is always the one that isn't to be publically sung, I wonder? And I bet Daeron had loads of fun translating it to all those languages!

Wish I'd been there, actually.

Author Reply: I think verse 31 is really really naughty compared to the other verses. *LOL* And I am sure Daeron had loads of fun translating the song, too. And if you wish you had been there, then I've done my job. Thanks for letting me know, Larner. I appreciate it.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The return of the infamous Elf and the Fruit Vendor. I really wish you would post the verses sometime. The El squared seem to enjoy being the center of attenion - and they actually managed to get drunk? Poor Glorfy having to deal with those two even now. The story is delightful.

so just what is verse 31 about? I remember even the Valar had a laough oevr it. Perhaps your muse will grace you with the sordid tale of the hapless elf in said song nad you will share the story with us?

Author Reply: In Elf, Interrupted: Book One, Finrod describes in general what verse 31 was about. I believe it had something to do with turnips. At any rate, this song is really X-rated and not fit for posting anywhere. I think you will just have to use your imagination. Besides, coming up with 31 verses of a song would be a real chore.

I am glad to know that you are finding the story delightful so far, ellie. I hope you continue to do so. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it.

Loved Daeron and Glorfi's comments about the twins and Jud's hair style,
a bit along the lines of "Don't even think abaht it!"(said with a strong New Jersey accent!) and "Not untill hell freezes over!"
Well the twins have made a really good first impression, lets hope Glorfi remembers how to put together one of their fathers tonics to help them get over the affects of too much beer, which must be strong stuff to put those two under the table!
More please,
Lynda

Author Reply: I had a time coming up with appropriate Sindarin and Quenya phrases that pretty much said just that. *LOL* And it's not that the beer was strong, because Glorfindel says it wasn't, but that they over-indulged on it. Something I think everyone who's been to college or has seen "Animal House" would appreciate. *grin*

ROFL! The infamous verse 31! Well, Glorfindel was saved by the bell--or rather, fortuitous circumstance. I hope that Elladan and Elrohir manage to get to class on time in the morning, and I really don't envy them the hangover they are likely to have.

I was quite amused also by Daeron getting lost in the music and the "arcane language" of music line.

I like Matt and Lily (they do remind me of folks I know and like!). I'm reserving comment on Shane and the other mortal roomies until I see more of them.

Thanks again for a chapter that had me laughing out loud. :)

Author Reply: Hi, Rhyselle. Yes, the infamous verse 31! Saved by the Valar more likely. *LOL* Anyway, I am glad you like Matt and Lily and I hope eventually you come to like the other roomies as well. They all have their good points.
