Elf Academy  by Fiondil 9 Review(s)

You have no idea how happy it makes me that you cite Vinyar Tengwar and Parma Eldalamberon as sources. I should become an E.L.F. member again... My aunt gave me my first year of membership for Christmas when I was in 8th grade. I renewed a couple years when I was in high school, but haven't seen any of those publications since. Good times.

Author Reply: Hi Andi. You will find me quoting from Vinya Tengwar and Parma Eldalamberon quite often. I have most of them and refer to them constantly for my stories. I also utilize the Histories of Middle-earth mainly because Tolkien often provided more detailed descriptions of people and places that were left out of the Silmarillion and other writings. I hope you are enjoying this series. I'm sure you will get all caught up with it soon enough and perhaps you'll even take a look at some of my other stories along the way. Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate you doing so very much.

Atto,

I'm giving you a sort of 'Advent calendar' of reviews here, aren't I? One a day. More or less. *grin* Anyway, so I wanted to say that I was a little annoyed with Ms. Clannach to begin with, but I quickly felt sorry for her as the Elves took over the class. She really doesn't know what she's got herself into, but at least Glorfindel took pity on her. The Twins certainly weren't helping.

Speaking of the Twins, they certainly got a dose of their own medicine when everyone started coming around and asking about *that song*, wanting to hear more. "Della" seemed pretty composed about the whole thing, considering she and "Misty" were helping sing it (though they at least didn't make a drunken spectacle of themselves, I suppose).

Of course, the Twins started misbehaving again in Elf Etiquette. Though it seems Glorfi's put a tight rein on them, and he was very nice to Ms. Clannach, too. It's good to have "Loren" around, I must say. I just miss Finrod, lol. I'm sure he does, too.

Tye-melin, Atto.

Kaylee

Author Reply: An 'Advent calendar' of reviews sounds good, Kaylee. Something for me to look forward to each day. *grin* I'm sure the Twins were rather embarrassed by their behavior once they sobered up. And "Loren" is very good a quashing their more exuberant enthusiasm. *grin* I'm sure Glorfi misses Finrod, too. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it. Tye-melin.

Awwh... Poor Deirdre. I can simpathise with her. Having your class taken over... *wince* Good that Glorfindel was so gracious and came up with favourable alternatives.

The effort to remain disguised was tested here, I saw. I kept expecting Nimrodel to spill out her Elven heritage when she was talking about the proper word class of Elf. But is it tru, the Tuatha de Dannan?

The last chapter (Oh no. The second chapter, I think.) kind of clashed with this one. Back then you said that the week-long journey riding in a mini-van was tiring, but now Glorfindel ran for 5 hours straight without breaking a sweat and obviously not tired, despite the mountainous terrain.

Hmm. I thought the cure for hangovers was water or tea? But perhaps it is different for each person/community. And I thought that at least Jud and Shane would have been similarly incapasitated. LOL They seemed to be the types to drink excessively too. Sadly there was not much interactions between the six pairs of Firstborn and Secondborn in this chapter... The classroom interaction made it up, though, rather nicely. :) I did not stop laughing when Deirdre talked about the etiquettes and when Glorfindel read the hand-out. The irony of it all!

I wish you described Glorfindel's little trip to the town. That would have been interesting. Oh, by the way, Elladan's summary of the greeting was quite funny. I did not expect to 'hear' that from him... Meh. It turned out I am still trying to match the Elves with their modern lives. And it was just typical of him to trick the mortals into saying things like that... LOL I was just surprised Elrohir did not imitate his action. (I only recognised the words "orch" and "Mandos" from all of those, but that was enough to make me laugh in the very first instance of reading.)

How many chapters will this story contain? Ah, well, at least now we get to read this story... Oh, and you were right about spouting Welsh; however, there might just be some people recognising some phrases of that language. Being in the hinterland of Alaska helps, at least, yes...

The atmosphere of the classroom was more like a seminar than a class, or so I felt. There was no one doing the usual things in a class like taking some notepad/book and pens from their bags or something like that... I did not hear any mention about bags either, at least from people like Lily. (Hee. Shane just gave me the impression of being carefree and tomboy.) That was the only thing distracting me from the otherwise perfect classroom scene. (Umm. I hope you would not mind if I talked about this... I did not realise that I have doing it since the start of the story. Sorry.)

Deirdre's look reminded me, much, of Lily Evans from the Harry Potter series, by the way. (I wanted to say this in response to the third chapter but forgot.) Red hair and green eyes and a cheery personality tempered with some... well... things like we saw in the convesation btween Glorfindel and her. Amusing, to me.

Umm. Elves were usually good with animals... I would love to see them handle the huskies and rein-deer... :) Especially Elladan and Elrohir. (By the way, people seemed to label them as children, but they did not do the same to others; not to Glorfindel, most of all. I wonder if some time some disguises would crack early and the rest followed...)

The arrangement of the classes and sections were a bit unusual, but I guess they made sense, given how few the students were, and how the number of the teachers were even fewer. That was like a promise for more pleasant unexpectedness. Well, I am on to finding ot just what surprises lay on the next corner, then.

Author Reply: The Tuatha de Dannan were the Elves of Irish legend and lore and were considered of normal human size and lived in castles and such.

If you have never sat for hours on end in a car with little in the way of movement and doing so over a period of several days, you have never known how very tiring it is to just sit and watch the scenery go by. Much different from being active, I assure you.

The Elf Academy is not set up the same way as the rest of the college since many of the students are already college graduates, though some, like Zach, are not, so the way the classes are run will be somewhat different than how they might be conducted if they were Maths or History classes. And I arranged the classes the way I did for the sake of the plot. *grin*

This story is 20 chapters long so it is half way to complettion.

Oh no. Language lessons from the twins! ROFL, those poor Mortals, or should I say poor twins when Glorfi finally gets them alone...if they ever make it to Aman, just wait until Elrond and Celebrian hear THIS one...and them taking over the class was hysterical. "Greetings, fair mortals"? Right. *snort*

Tye-melin,

Kaylee!

Author Reply: I am sure Glorfi gave them a fine lecture when he got them alone later, one they are not likely to forget anytime soon. *Grin*

I wonder if they'll make Elladan wear a frilly apron when making cookies? That would be hilarious.

Author Reply: Not sure about that. I doubt that they do frilly at a school cafeteria.

Trust the twins to play the games on others that Dwarves once played on them! (See Bodkin's work and my "The Benefits of Scholarship" in Moment in Time). It's so fun to play such games! Now, if anyone in the class has read LOTR they just MIGHT have a clue.... Heh!

Author Reply: Yes, indeed, Larner. However, in this AU LOTR has never been published, so the Mortals will remain clueless. *grin*

Glorfindel just can't help taking over, can he? LOL! I don't think he really *meant* to, but it was the only way to keep the twins in line...

And those phrases she wanted them to use...*shudder*...it's just as well he did take over.

I LOL'd when I read the girls envying his hair!

Author Reply: Hi Dreamflower. Glorfindel is a natural leader, so he can't help but to take over when the situation requires him to do so. I'm glad you disapprove of the phrases Deirdre came up with, they are rather silly, aren't they? And I bet every female in the classroom was envying Glorfindel's hair. *LOL*

Somehow I think the Staff at Northen Lights are going to wonder what hit them, besides having a much better course of study by the time Glorfindel and Co., are done with them, can't wait for the survival course!
See, I was right, Glorfindel does need to keep a leash on the Twins, even he admits it!
Liked Glorfindels suggestion for greetings though, being addressed as a 'fair Mortal', while accurate, is a bit 'precious' for me!
More please,
Lynda

Author Reply: Well, Glorfindel is just entering into the game that the Elf Academy has set up, so to speak, and he knows that this is the type of address people would expect or assume from an Elf. I doubt he ever addressed anyone as 'fair Mortal'. That would have caused great resentment among said Mortals. *grin*

We will see just how the Elves end up taking over the curriculum at the Academy eventually. Stay tuned!

“Naughty doesn’t even come close, my dear,” Nimrodel said with a knowing smile. “Appalling is more like it.” Oh yes, appalling - that was why she was singing along herself!

Hm ... a course in Elf legends, too? Now you have me wondering what that is supposed to be meaning – these fairy tales about diminutive beings with wings or the tales about the *true* Elves from so long ago or something entirely different!

“If those costumes come attached with wings,” Elrohir whispered darkly, sure that only his fellow Elves would hear him, “I’m out of here.” Now *that* I can believe! The idea of Glorfindel in a winged costume ... *ROTFLMAO*

Really, before even the first hour was over, I felt decidedly sorry for Deirdre. The poor woman! It's not easy to have *real* Elves in your class, even if she doesn't know that she has. First they are giving her language lessons and then they're taking over the whole class!

The twins are quite naughty! I'd expected them to be a bit more mature by then – they're certainly old enough to behave! *shakes head* Though I can admittedly see how tempting it has to be to teach the mortals Elven curses and sell them off as greetings.

Author Reply: We will see in the next chapter what Elf Legends entails and how the real Elves react to them.

As for the Elf Guide costumes... we will see what they are like soon enough and how the Elves react to them as well. *evil grin*

And the twins I think are just taking advantage of the situation, enjoying tweaking the Mortals who are little more than children in their eyes.
