| Poor Hammie! Thanks for pointing me back to this story, Dreamflower...me being me, I had/have to read and review the whole lot, so your inbox is going to be filled up *again*, LOL!!! I can't say I'm *particularly* sorry for that. *impish grin* I do love the way Gandalf bonds with the hobbits!! Author Reply: And I can't say I'm particularly sorry for waking up to the delight of a full inbox! In UT, we are told that what drew Gandalf to hobbits was "their Pity" for one another during the Long Winter; I've always wanted to explore that a little. So this was a good challenge. | |

| This was just lovely. I see now why Gandalf loves Hobbits. Sadly it is true to life that those who havve the least are the most ikely to share. Author Reply: Yes-- I think compassion is drawn to compassion. Gandalf spent much time with Nienna and Lorien, and I think he was absolutely drawn to hobbits because they are a compassionate people for the most part. | |

| There was no sign of defeat about them This is so sad, and yet so hopeful at the same time. What a serendipitious meeting. Dear Gandalf, and what a dear beginning to his friendship with and respect for the hobbits. Author Reply: This is so sad, and yet so hopeful at the same time. Thank you-- I wanted it to be hopeful as well as sad-- hobbits just don't give up hope, and neither does Gandalf! I actually had a little bit of this written a while back, and then abandoned it because at the time I didn't have all the details of time and so forth figured out. But the Long Winter is when the Shire-folk make their way into his heart. | |
