| What a wonderful encounter! Yes, at this point in time, Sam's trying very hard to "keep his place", and of course, Pippin's having none of it, because in his mind Sam's already a friend. And he's a Took and does as he pleases. (And yes, Pip, he's busy at midnight. But he won't want to be teased.) And a very nice picture of the two walking along beneath the stars in companionable silence... Author Reply: He won't want to be teased, yes, and if Sam isn't allowed to know whom the gentry are pursuing, he doesn't see why Pippin should have to know what he's up to. I think Rosie remained silent through much of the Red Book due to Sam's own ability to keep a secret. | |
