Elf Academy Part Deux  by Fiondil 15 Review(s)
harrowcatReviewed Chapter: 62 on 10/16/2012
No Elf Academy is anything but boring. I am gleefully up to date with reading but shamefully behind with reviewing. I am sorry and I will now try to catch up before we get to the end but that might be a race I lose!

I am glad that the 3 Elves and 2 Mortals can finally move forward together. Now we cry Poor Artemus. His little outburst is frightening for all concerned but especially, I think, for him.

Author Reply: Hi Harrowcat. I'm glad you're catching up with reviews. And don't worry. Review as you can. Elf Academy isn't going anywhere. *grin*

Anyway, now that both sides have tested each other, they might be able to concentrate on just being friends. And yes, "poor Artemus". He definitely must have thought he was losing it at that moment and that's a dangerous thing for him to do, considering who and what he is. Ron will be very busy with him for the foreseeable future.

Thanks for the review. It's appreciated.

I had the feeling that the all the "Tour" was invented by a bunch very bored Elves, who underestimated the Mortal ability to accept a challenge.
I was slightly worried that Finrod could be a bit too overprotective. Good, that he was reminded that "the children" are older than the Egyptian pyramids.
I like Laurendil's reaction. The night with Bregolas was probably really memorable.

Author Reply: Hi Serindė. Yes, very bored Elves. *grin* And Finrod is just being a concerned papa where his youngest is concerned, but Alex has the right of it. I suspect the night with Bregolas was more than memorable. *grin* Thanks for reviewing. It's much appreciated.

Well, that was interesting to read! I do like how Derek and Alex stood up for themselves. No, mortals don't play by the same rules as elves, and that's something the folk from Valinor as well as the elves who have been resident in Wiseman will have to come to terms with.

It was interesting to see how Derek has stepped forward in the last couple of chapters. No longer just Alex's roommate, he really is Alex's gwador now, and a strong character in his own right.

"'Alex, mate, let her go,' Derek said calmly but with grave authority."

I really liked this line. More and more, Derek reminds me of several sailors that I know from my own Navy career, and he is just the person that Alex needs as his friend and brother as Alex deals with all of the varying levels of stress that he has from trying to sort out and integrate his own identity with the alter-egos he's created and lived over his time with the Agency (not to mention the stress of dealing with Farrell's mucking about with his mission. The military isn't exactly like spy work, but Derek has enough experience with military intelligence to understand where Alex is coming from, and he's got the steadiness, ability to focus, and the courage that Alex needs when the spy's world starts going off-kilter.

I don't really feel sorry for Nielluin; what she said to Alex was rather foolish. But she really hadn't seen the worst of him yet. I would hope that she would take him more seriously in the future. Alex isn't immortal and doesn't have the elves' physical strength and stamina, but he has been trained to be a ruthless killing machine, a critical thinker, and is darned good at what he's been trained to do.

Of course, I'm sure that this chapter's conversations will take some time for the characters to absorb (and me too!), so maybe there will be future opportunities for the new (and old!) elves to learn not to discount what our mortal lead characters are capable of.

Well done!

Author Reply: Hi Rhyselle. Derek rather shines in these most recent chapters. As you say, he's becoming more than Alex's roommate; he's become Alex's gwador and an ally of the Elves. And whether Alex knows it or not, he needs Derek. Derek, in a way, is replacing Junior as Alex's closest friend, and unlike Junior, he will not betray that friendship.

Nielluin has her own problems. She's a bit arrogant, to say the least, and she has not taken Alex's measure and does not really understand that the Mortals can be just as deadly as the Elves when suffiicently trained.

So, the elves came up with that list of toxic brews? What did they expect to happen if something like this hangs on the wall in a bar? Especially with students around? *shakes head* Alex's attack on Nell shows that he is dangerous and still not in control of his two persona. They need to do something about it, or he is a danger to himself and everyone around. They still have Farrell to deal with and Alex as a loose cannon is not a good idea.

Author Reply: Hi obsidianj. Well, as Glorfindel said, it was only meant as a joke and the Elves didn't expect anyone to actually take the challenge. And Alex is very dangerous and always will be even if and when he is able to integrate the Artemus part of him. That will never change. We'll actually be seeing Farrell in the next chapter. Thanks for commenting. It's much appreciated.

While Alex is somewhat right that the three Elves aren't exactly children any more, I'm not sure it was a good idea to scream that fact out so publicly. Oh well, what's done is done. Some already know, and the others hopefully forget about it.

*sigh* Don't like it that Alex attacked Nielluin. That was rather uncalled for. It seems he really can't take much more, though there's still the problem Farrell hanging over them. If I'm not mistaken, Thanksgiving and with it that deadline is coming rather close. So Alex can't afford to react that badly to something rather harmless.

Amazing how the Elves order everyone around and the mortals do it. Though again, Finrod hinted at their true identity with quite a few strangers around.

Hm ... does that mean that the Valar or Maiar intervened once again?

Alex taking charge and talking with Finda that way was a bit surprising, but nice. All in all, it seems things weren't as bad as I initially feared.

Boring? Ha! Alex and Derek may not know it, but they are in the company of some of the worst troublemakers in all of Valinor. That has to be rubbing off on them, after all!

Author Reply: Hi Kitty. I think Alex was so angry at Finrod that he just wasn't thinking and some of the Academy students, like Jack, would already know about the Elves and certainly the locals would as well. And, of course, with Farrell in the background somewhere, he's really stressed so Nielluin's comments just sent him around the bend and Artemus took over for a few minutes. And whatever Alex's problems he is mature enough to know when he's in the wrong so apologizing to Findalaurė was a smart move on his part.

It does seem as if possibly one of the Maiar on watch had a hand in calling for Glorfindel and Finrod but we'll probably never know the truth

Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it very much.

Oh, yes, I'd say that the lessons ought to have been well learned at this point. Nicely done!

Author Reply: Thanks, Larner. I'm glad you liked this. Yes, many lessons have been learned on all sides at this point. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. I appreciate it very much.

Ah, male bonding at its best (or is that worst?). Alcohol is often the great leveller. And lol Glorfindel, if you compile a toxic drink list, what do you THINK people are going to do with it? Especially COLLEGE people, under stress, with too much free time XD And hey, the three amigos got further than anyone else, I'd say that's an accomplishment. And oh look, I feel less murderous towards Findalaure now. I am still inclined to point and laugh at his hangover though.

Author Reply: Hi bookworm. Alcohol is often the great leveller. You tend not to lord it over others when you remember that they've seen you drunk. *grin* And it was a great accomplishment for them to get as far as they did. If Findalaurė hadn't started singing and just drunk the drink, everything would've been fine. Oh well.... And I'm sure a lot of readers are sniggering over Findalaurė's hangover (as well as those of his gwedyr), though I hope not too loudly. *grin*

I'm glad the three amigos are ok, as I thought they would be. I was surprised with Alex's reaction. I didn't think Finrod and Glorfindel were that off base. But who am I.

There are three little things that niggle at me as I read the last few chapters. Seems to me that 'someone' is interfering. I have the strong inclination to think it might be Namo.

I think everyone could use a really good night's sleep right about now.

Great chapter, as always.

Author Reply: Hi Agape. Well the three amigos are very hung over but they'll survive. Finrod and Glorfindel were acting like parents (which Finrod is) reprimanding the kiddies, but none of them are kiddies anymore and that's what Alex resented. At any rate, they all apologized in the end and that's all that matters. I'm not sure if Nįmo is interfering or not. I'm sure he and the other Valar are keeping a close eye on things, as we will see. And they could all use a good night's sleep or actually several good night's sleep right about now. *grin*

Thanks for the review. I greatly appreciate it.

Wow - that crew of students sure got an eyeful - love to be a fly on the wall in some of those dorm rooms. King of Nargothrond indeed! The reaction of the establishment's staff at the end was priceless. :-)

Hopefully, many lessons learned, all the way around, and maybe Nell has learned to step a little more carefully as well. Adjusting expectations to conform with reality is always a good thing.

And Ratty... grrrrrr...

Author Reply: Hi Lyana. Yes, the entire bar got an eyeful and an earful. We'll see how well everyone has learned their lessons, including Nell in the coming chapters. As for Ratty.... he'll turn up eventually, too. Thanks for leaving a review. I appreciate it very much.

I see that the poor, sheltered baby of Finrod's family is about to discover the cruel, hard reality of hangovers. And so are his friends. Actually, I think they may have had hangovers before, but there are hangovers, and then there are HANGOVERS!
I think you need to get used to me being snarky about the three amigos until they get off their lordly high horses and learn a bit of sense. Fair warning, Fiondil! But hopefully the pain of the hangovers will able to help them start seeing sense.
It makes sense that the Wiseman Elves have too much sense to do the "Elven Tour Guide" challenge, even if they did come up with the drinks. I rather like the description of Amroth's contribution.
I hope Nielluin doesn't get in a snit because of the way Alex manhandled her. Alex is a dangerous guy, and the Artemus part of his self is definitely not a nice guy, and considering the situation in Wiseman, with Farrell sneaking around in the bushes, she had better get used to not being treated like a princess all the time (which is probably what she is used to.) (And is she _does_ get snippy, _I_ will probably get snarky!)
I see that the Maiar are still on the job, sending the warning to Glorfindel.

Author Reply: Hi Sunny. You can be as snarky as you want towards the three amigos, for they richly deserve it. LOL! I'm glad you liked the description of Amroth's contribution. That will come up in a later chapter as well.

As for Nielluin, we'll have to see. She's obviously her mother's daughter as Finrod can and does testify. She has her own problems which will be addressed in a later chapter as well.

Yes, it was obviously one of the Maiar who "called" Glorfindel, alerting him to trouble. Good thing, too, or who knows what would have happened otherwise.
