| As soon as they were on their way to The Gold Nugget Café, you had to know someone would show up. "Rock Band", so what do you do with the rocks? Ah, yes, there is still a lot of "culture" for the new ones to absorb! His reaction to Gloria's open friendliness reminds me of how often in your stories the Valinorean Elves come up against American Democratic attitudes and sensibilities. The educated among us still give respect to other land's royalty, as we would to any leader. But we do not expect to let them dictate our lives. Someone in EA3 mentioned movie nights as a way to give them a bit of cultural reference. I think some education on Thomas Jefferson and his notions might help some of them understand the new world they are living in a bit better. So Vaire has been making ball clothes. How fun! Author Reply: Hi demeter d. The Gold Nugget Café seems to be Valar Central sometimes, doesn't it? And Finrod and the others do have a lot of culture to absorb that we just take for granted. And when you come from a more hierarchical society, the easy-going manner of Americans can certainly be off-putting, but I think Finrod, at least, is adapting to the style better than others. | Hadn't thought about it before, but 'rock band' really doesn't make much sense, when you think about it. No wonder poor Finrod doesn't understand what it is supposed to be! Quite the convenient way to get tickets to the ball and appropriate clothing. Enviable! Sometimes the Valar have their use. Author Reply: It doesn't make sense, does it, Kitty? | I am getting ther feeling that Namo enjoys 'playing' Nate, or maybe it is just the excuse to wear the duster and hat, a bit of a clothes horse our Namo! I can understand Finrods annoyance at everybody commenting on his depression, he knows he is depressed, even if he won't admit it to himself.( Did that make sense?) I wonder if any of the other Valinorian Elves are having problems with fitting into modern society. Finrods problems are compounded by his being shot plus he has his youngest with him plus his neice, who has as much, if not more than her mother's arrogance. Think this is enough late night musings. I have a feeling you're right about Námo playing Nate. *grin* I suspect that many, if not all, of the Valinórean Elves are having problems adjusting, but as this is from Finrod's POV, we only see his struggles, but I suspect they are compounded by his being shot and worrying about Finda and Nell on top of that. | I'm not quite certain why they think they need an even number of people, as Secret Santaing is circular rather than two sets of people. But it does appear that Valinor is intent on not being left out! Am just getting caught up after my mother board died. A friend lent me his laptop for the rest of the month, and first thing we had to do was reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows, and then my email program, and then my Broadband2Go dongle, and Word.... I love it when computers die unexpectedly! And the space bar on this one is not well balanced, I find. Now I need to redo the writing I'd started just before the Compaq quit! Author Reply: Hi Larner. See my explanation to Nancylea's review and also my response to Sunny's. The version of secret santa that the Elves are playing requires an even number. There is more than one version of the game and I've played it both ways. This version requires leaving clues as to your identity to the person to whom you are secret santa, so in this case you do need an even number of players. | love your stories. promised myself i wasn't going to start this one until christmas or you finishing it; see how good you tempt people? quick question though--- what's it matter even or odd number of people you have 15 names of recievers you have 15 givers you have 4 recievers you have 4 givers. Author Reply: Hi nancylea. Hah! Got you. LOL! I'm glad you are enjoying the story. As for your question, if you have three people, two of them will be each other's secret santa, but then the third person doesn't have a partner. Does that make more sense? There are different ways of playing secret santa. If you have an odd number of players, the easiest way is to have everyone buy a gift and then they draw lots to see who gets to choose a gift first (see my response to Sunny's review). The way the Elves are playing it, you need an even number of people to play so that everyone has a 'partner'. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to leave a review. I really appreciate it. | |

| Love the mistletoe touch - I hope the custom is at least a little explained or we could have some very affronted Elves! Can't wait to hear Finrod's reaction to a tux... Glorfi got shot??? Are we going to hear that story? (Yes, you've created a monsters - so kind of you to accomodate us with your wonderful, prolific offerings!) Author Reply: Hi Lyana. I'm sure the custom will be explained... after awhile. *grin* I doubt we'll hear the story of Glorfi getting shot, at least not any time soon. | Another fantastic update! Glad he is feeling happier. I hope they enjoy the ball and I hope that we all will be right there with them ;) Maybe there will be an extra trip from across the west with a few more elves? | Atto, Well, well, things are getting more and more interesting for Finrod, aren't they? So now he's met Gloria, and Nate has returned...I can't wait to see what will happen on Friday! (And a ball! That should go well...shall your readers make a bet on how long it will last before Glorfi and Finrod, or some of the other Wiseman and Valinorean Elves, perhaps the Three Amigos, let it descend into chaos? | A ball! that is great...And the mistletoe! we didn't have it when I grew up, learn about it here in USA. You made me think about how the Valinor elves will feel on the way that mortals speak to each other, and how open we can be, and you know, the way that women can flirt in this time compared to Valinor, it must be a shock. It is a fun tale, Fiondil, thank you very much, it really made me smile. Author Reply: Hi Fantasia. What's Christmas without a ball and mistletoe? It would be something of a shock for the Valinórean Elves to have to deal with the less straight-laced society here in America and that makes it fun to see how they react.
