Christmas at Edhellond: An Elf Academy Tale  by Fiondil 10 Review(s)
KittyReviewed Chapter: 7 on 2/5/2013
It makes sense that the Valar (or Maiar) were involved more than everyone thought. Besides, even if they did it more obvious, the Mortals wouldn't know who they are. Maybe a Saint legend or two are in truth based on them, who knows?

*snicker* Finrod was told he was *not* to take over the Academy? Figures!

That Tarn still is rather creepy, and the more I hear about it, the more so. Finrod is probably right about Caleb being a lure for Alex, and I can't say I find that comforting in any way. While I have been wondering what on earth is there, I am more and more sure that, for once, I do *not* want to find out!

Nice to see Finrod working on the clue, and that he's getting along so well with the Mortals, particularly Alex. His suggestion about Alex sharing his thoughts with the lambengolmor was unexpected, but I can see the appeal.

Author Reply: Hi Kitty. The tarn is indeed creepy, and like you, I don't really want to know what lies within it.

And of course Finrod, as the Friend of Men, would get along well with most mortals. That will prove important in the days, weeks, months and years ahead.

Thanks for commenting. It's much appreciated.

I'm glad the Elves were taken to the Tarn. It feels like it will hold some importance in the coming days, probably at the battle itself, if not before. But, of course, this is speculation since you love to make us guess????

I'm glad Finrod spent some time with Alex. I feel that relationship will be important, too.

Very interesting chapter, though I'm still worried about Finrod. He seems a little thin-skinned.

Author Reply: Hi Agape. Well, Finrod is still recovering from the gunshot wound, emotionally if not physically anymore, and you don't bounce back from something that traumatic in a day or three; it takes time and I think part of Finrod's depression is due to the fact that his expectations about Middle-earth didn't jive with reality and that has to be vey disappointing to him and to any of the other Valinórean Elves who remember Middle-earth from before.

At any rate, his relationship with Alex (and Derek) will prove important, though in what mannner, even I do not know as yet.

As for what sleeps in the tarn, I have no doubt it will be important at the battle and I just hope it doesn't wake up before that or there will be serious trouble for our heroes.

Thanks for taking the time to review. I appreciate it very much.

Boring parties in Rivendell? *shakes head at the Twins* It's sort of hard to imagine, and I'd have thought that if the Twins had found the parties that tedious, that they wouldn't have been above making things more interesting. ;-)

Interesting about the Tarn, and how the thing there "recognized" Alex as a descendant of Elros. And Aragorn, too, I assume. Which makes me furiously wonder about just what that thing is...

Author Reply: Hi Sunny. Well I'm sure the Twins are exaggerating a bit here. *grin* And whatever sleeps in the Tarn, I hope it stays asleep for everyone's sake. Thanks for commenting. It's much appreciated.

Um... really ought to proof better... :-) Let's try this again - I liked the way Finrod jumped to the thought that he ought to tell Alex about Bredal's current happiness.

Author Reply: Okay, that makes a lot more sense now. LOL! And yes, Finrod should tell Alex about Bregdal's current happiness. Such knowledge will help him, I'm sure. Thanks for clearing things up.

Love Nell's astute observation about Namo's appearance (or lack thereof) at Valinorian parties. And Finrod's feelings make even more sense if he has yet to be told/discover his purpose; that's hard for anyone, let alone someone who is so used to command. His conclusion at the tarn that the nasty (some leftover from the Helcaran's reign or Helcaran himself???) in the tarn recognized Alex for who he was and attempted to lure him in with Caleb gave me goosebumps - literally! And I liked the way he jumped to the thought that he really ought to tell Alex aboutI wonder if Alex yet grasps how crucial he is to everything...

Author Reply: Hi Lyana. Nell is pretty astute, but hopefully, as Finrod points out, with the Reborn outnumbering the Once-born, such attitudes will and are changing. Not knowing exactly what you are expected to be doing can be frustrating and part of this story is seeing Finrod begin to grasp what his purpose may be. And I don't think Alex does or wants to understand how crucial he is to everything just yet.

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.

Finally there's a good moment to give this story the attention it deserves.

It is easy to forget how little Finrod knows about the modern world and how different the Elvish culture is (I can only imagine what they were thinking about tuxedos!). He needs to learn and quickly, but it will be difficult for him to understand. I'm glad that there's no such need for charity among the Elves.

I first wondered about the secret Santa game, as the version I've played didn't need an even number of people, but your answers to others' questions about it earlier cleared it somewhat.

A balrog in the lake? Somehow that doesn't sound likely *grin*. I'll vote for the Watcher's relative.

I hope you had a very nice Christmas!

Author Reply: Hi someone. It is easy to forget that Finrod knows next to nothing about the modern world and how different it is even from the cultures of the Edain whom he remembers and, of course, he needs to learn and quickly, they all do.

There are different ways of playing secret santa and I decided to use this version for story purposes.

I have no idea what is in the tarn and, personally, I hope never to find out.

I had a very nice Christmas, thank you, and I hope yours was good as well. Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

Merry Christmas! Between all the running around I found a few minutes to sit down and read the newest chapter. I admit I'm completely clueless as to who is Finrod's secret santa. I just enjoy the ride.
I hope it is not a Balrog that sleeps under the Tarn. Whatever it is it will be bad enough.

Author Reply: Merry Christmas! There are other clues on the way and perhaps once you have them you'll be able to guess, but I'm glad you're enjoying the ride nonetheless. Whatever sleeps in the tarn is not good, that's for sure. Anyway, thanks for taking a moment to read the chapter and review. I appreciate it very much.

Merry Christmas Eve!!! and what an amazing christmas gift =D though i know that this is a gift to be shared with all. anyway, lovely chapter as always, never seen a chapter from you that isnt lovely of course but then again i say it every time... *sigh* i need more colorful language.... well personal problems aside, again lovely chapter and i do wonder what is in that tarn... prehaps we shall find out in EA 3?

Author Reply: Hi ladyevenstar. Merry Christmas! I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter. I have no idea what sleeps in the tarn, and frankly I hope we never find out in any installment of Elf Academy, but you just never know what the Muse will decide to do. THanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

The windy city is part of his clues hey? Perhaps they are going to give him a hot air balloon ride ;) I am glad they aren't going to ignore the Tarn. Not that I thought they would. I am just hoping to know what it is too LOL So the clues are Hersey PA and Chicago IL...Route 66?

Author Reply: Hello Laer. Well we still have 2 more clues and perhaps they will help give you an idea of the identity of Finrod's secret santa. And the tarn is too important not to be ignored. Now that the Valinórean Elves are there, they will have more people to keep an eye on it.

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.

So glad that the tarn and the sleeper have not been ignored. Whatever it is could prove a major problem. Volcano, maybe? I am trying to figure out the secret Santa, but your clues are too good for me. Of course, I am thoroughly enjoying the story.

Thank you. May you and all you love have a very peaceful and Merry Christmas.

Author Reply: I don't think the Elves, especially Glorfindel, would ever ignore the tarn and what sleeps there, and now Fnrod knows, as do the other Valinórean Elves, and they will be able to help with keeping watch on the tarn.

Perhaps the later clues will help you solve the Secret Santa before Finrod does.

At any rate, I'm glad you are so enjoying the story, UTfrog. Thanks for letting me know and may you and yours have a Merry Christmas as well.
