A Long and Weary Way  by Canafinwe 7 Review(s)

What a chore for Aragorn and Gandalf... and how it shows their devotion to fighting evil and darkness. I can't even imagine the toll this is all taking on Aragorn, physically and emotionally.

And Gollum is as well-characterized here as I've ever seen him... utterly, mind-bogglingly (if that's a word) frustrating.

Author Reply: These scenes were wearisome to write at times, too. Writing Gollum is a bit like writing the world's most vitriolic reboot of "Green Eggs and Ham": you only have fifty words to work with, and they just keep circling around and around and around again.

Great chapter. And the smell! Brrr. I can imagine how much worse it is for Aragorn now once he bathed and is clean. Gollum is a piece of work. Loved the way Aragorn pieced together some information out of all the inane babble of Gollum. Although it is not much.

Author Reply: Thank you for the lovely review yet again! Yes, I'm sure it is worse for Aragorn now: he's no longer acclimatized to it, and they're in a MUCH more enclosed environment, and he had actually dared to hope that he had left all that behind him.

Piecing together this story must have been an epic struggle!

That was such a juicy chapter! And I liked the funny bits. I can't wait for the next one.

Author Reply: Thank you! It's nice to have some fun: there hasn't been very much of that. Cheers!

Interesting chapter. Looks like Aragorn and Gandalf can get to the truth with the pair working together. Again, I am so happy you can work on this great story again.

Author Reply: Here's hoping...

It's great to be working on it again! I'm hoping to finish it before I run out of steam.

Loved the glimpse of Bilbo, and the description of his strength of will.

Aragorn's plan was very wise! If no one had been there to hear what Gollum said when he thought the guardroom was empty... How much have they missed in the earlier sessions, with the setup as it was?

Author Reply: So glad my little treatise didn't scare you off! I love the respect Aragorn so clearly has for Bilbo in the book: it's nice to have these moments in this grim story.

Veered good question, too!

I have enjoyed reading this story for some time now and am glad to see you continue it! Your way of writing Aragorn is excellent; it shows "the most hardy of living men", the king and a normal man in the same person. It is the same with the secondary characters and little details (Aragorn loving elvish bread, imitating Elrond's gestures, Gollum's fishing and attempted chicken robbery...), everything seems so multi-dimensional, and I really like it.

One of my favorite parts in this story is the stay with the Beornings, and it's interesting how the different cultures show every time Aragorn gets some help, from Faramir, Celeborn, Grimbeorn and Thranduil. None of those places were similar, but all of them felt real. Poor Aragorn though, he still has to walk home after this journey and then leave with the Fellowship. The man has to walk way too much.

Mordor or Thorongil? I have a soft spot for good, long Thorongil stories. For your... friend's question.

Author Reply: Thank you so much! I take great care in writing Aragorn, so it's always wonderful to know when others who love him like my characterization. I'm glad you like the details!

The chapters in Grimbeorn's hall were such fun to write! I have always loved that Beorn had many descendants. Aragorn's path takes him through so many different places and into contact with so many different cultures... and yes! He has to walk WAY too much. No wonder he was so thankful for the Lorien-boats...

Thank you for your vote! Thorongil would make for a much longer story, certainly!

Bilbo's indomitable hobbity will .... I love that phrase.

Thorongil's time in Gondor, please! :)

Author Reply: Thank you! It's clear in the book how highly Aragorn thinks of Bilbo, and how highly Bilbo thinks of Aragorn.

Thank you, too, for the vote! I certainly have had the Thorongil story on the slate for much longer.
