Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 27 Review(s)
KittyReviewed Chapter: 31 on 6/24/2014
So now Vorondur knows. Oh, I can imagine he's not amused, not at all. And the same goes for Finrod. The fact that the twins and Serindë have vanished and don't answer their phones is worrying, though.

Well, that went well ... I have to admit that the two Elven healers still sound slightly arrogant and stuck-up here about being reprimanded a second time for their idiocy, at least to me. Vorondur should not have attacked Eärnur, of course, but I guess they are all at the end of their tether with everything that happened, so it was probably only a matter of time.

Author Reply: Vorondur is very protective of his daughter, having lost two other children, so it's not surprising that he does attack Eärnur, however wrong it was for him to do so. Luckily, Kyle was there to save them both. *grin* Thanks for reviewing, Kitty. It's appreciated.

The title alone made me apprehensive. Vorondur is usually the voice of reason. When these types blow, it is bad. I was right. He blew up spectacularly. Luckily, Kyle was there to prevent the worst. I admit, I cheered Vorondur on at the beginning of the attack. Earnur was just too cavalier about his mistake. But when Vorondur couldn't get himself under control again, I got concerned. If Vorondur wouln'd have attacked, I think Finrod would have done something. When he got so dangerously calm, my alarm bells started ringing, and Vorondur's reaction was telling. I loved the description of the schoolbus episode. So lifelike ;-).

Author Reply: Hi obsidianj. Yeah, you have to watch out for the quiet ones. But, as you say, he was lucky Kyle was there to make sure things didn't get worse. And Finrod being dangerously calm is also not a good thing. Eärnur and Vardamir were not in a good place with those two. And I've been stuck behind too many school buses in my life NOT to put that in a story somewhere. Even Elves have to obey the rules of the road. *grin* Thanks for reviewing. It's greatly appreciated.

Yikes yikes and more yikes! Vorondur was almost a kin slayer. That would not have been a good thing at all. :(

Sneaky Kyle having drugs for sharing. Glad that he stopped him before it was too late. That would have been a very bad thing. Now as for how the other elves are going to act...oh boy

Author Reply: Hi Laer. Yeah, Kyle is sneaky, but in a good way. We'll see how things progress from here. Thanks for reviewing. It's appreciated.

TariReviewed Chapter: 31 on 4/16/2014
Methinks Vorondur was in the car with me when I get stuck behind school buses which happens all to often. I feel exactly the same way. What makes me even angrier is when the school is right across the street. There is no need for that child to take a bus.

Author Reply: Hi Tari. I know what you mean. I hate that the bus stops at each separate house instead of the kids all congregating in one pick-up spot like when I was a kid. That's really frustrating. Anyway, I'm glad to see you're still reading this story. Thanks for reviewing. It's always appreciated.

Hello!

*Scales up the cliff and looks around* You got a room for one more? I'm bringing chocolate-raspberry cupcakes. :)

I have been following this story - and others - for a couple of years now, though not being much of a cliff dweller I usually wait until a story is finished, so I can read it all at once. No chance of that any more, It's all I can do to wait a few days for a new chapter. So I figured I should at least pen out a review and get a few impressions off my chest.

Firstly I'm really enjoying your (modern) mortal/elf interactions. The whole 'outsiders looking in' perspective is brilliant and maybe it's some sort of suppressed insecurity, but I love watching perfect condescending elves getting taken down a peg by 'mere' mortals. This chapter made me like Kyle Stoner even more than I already did: the man might be arrogant as hell, but he's got plenty to be arrogant about. Same with Alex/Artemus (I adore Alex. I want Alex and Valandur sit down and speak of all things linquistical, philological and spy-logical).

The last few chapters have been rather hectic, huh? I wonder if the elves are being unduly influenced by something/someone, because it feels like they are passing around the Idiot Ball: from Helyanwe to Glorfindel (Rusty Nail) to Elrohir (attacking Helyanwe) to the Aman Elves as a group, to the twins (briefly) to Vardamir&Earnur and now to Vorondur. Wonder who is next?

It seems like there's a lot going on for a moment, but if there's ever a lull in the story, it would be fun to see a bit more of the elves exploring and wondering at the arts of modern world, be it music, film, literature or something else. (Somebody introduce Nell to the works of VIrginia Woolf? Erstwhile warriors to Hemingway or Remarq? Huxley or Orwell to freak out all the elves or more modern fantasy to freak out Finrod? The possibilities are endless.)

Oh and before I forget (how COULD I forget?) I absolutely totally utterly adore your Namo. Can you believe it, I barely even thought about him when I first read The Silmarillion and now I keep leafing through the book for mentions of him and pout, because I like your version better than the original. (Then again, the original was written by the exiled/cursed Noldor and whatever do they know anyway?)

Thanks for reading my ramblings, hope it was reasonably coherent.

-Dire

Author Reply: Hi Dire. Welcome to the cliff. Just find a spot and watch out for the edge. LOL! And goodies are always welcome. Chocolate-raspberry cupcakes. Yum!

I'm glad to know you've been reading and enjoying my stories, especially the Elf Academy series. And don't worry. There will be some chapters coming up eventually where we see Valandur interacting with Alex, both as a spymaster and as a linguist, so your wish has been anticipated.

These last few chapters have been hectic. We'll get a slight break from all the hoopla but not by much. Too much is happening, so sit back and enjoy the ride.

And I'm so glad you like Námo in all this. From the very beginning when I first read the Silmarillion I was intrigued by this particular Vala more than all the others, so when I started writing my stories, it just seemed natural for me to write him in. I've been enjoying Námo ever since.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to climb the cliff and join the rest of the cliff-dwellers and leave a review letting me know how much you've been enjoying this series. I really appreciate you letting me know.

You could have started this chapter with the warning: "Be afraid. Be very afraid."

For Ron who was already losing it just after reading the note to then go see Finrod and watch him get ready to lose his cool as well, or actually worse, become too cool, things had to be very very bad indeed. It was very amusing that the thing Ron fears most, second to the possibility of something bad happening to a member of family, is the wrath of his wife. LOL! That was a nice bit of humor after watching his decent into madness.

Love all the talk of cliff dwelling and snacks and beverages while the cliff-perchers wait for the next chapter. You have got to be proud or a very sick man who delights in tormenting others or a secret member of the cliff-dwelling restoration society, or perhaps a little of all three. LOL

Author Reply: Hi Ellie. Yeah, I suppose I could've started the chapter with that warning. LOL! And of course, the thing Ron would fear most, second to having something bad happen to a member of his family, is the wrath of his wife. He's not a fool, whatever else he might be. Holly's got him properly trained. *grin*

Anyway, the talk among the cliff-perchers is very amusing. I think I'm more proud than sick and the cliff-dwelling restoration society is a worthwhile cause. As the saying goes, "If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room". *sticks out tongue and makes a rude noise*

Thanks for reviewing. It greatly appreciated as always.

Hi Fiondil,
Just brought my lawn chair to the cliff along with everyone else.
Good job on this chapter(as always). A lot of irony here!
Vorondur getting homicidal over someone's arrogance regarding the Twins since Glorfindel's not able to do it this time; he gets a shot to the shoulder instead of a shot to the jaw; Valinorian Elves c/o being dressed down by a prince.
Hell, it's no wonder after Kyle's experience with Glorfindel in EA2 he goes around with lots of hypodermic needles in his bag (lots and lots and lots).
Well, folks, if you're at the edge of a cliff just watch which way the wind is blowing if you decide on scattering ashes.
The Dude abides,
Diana

Author Reply: Hi Diana. There are a lot of ironies in the fire, as a character in another genre is fond of saying. We'll see how it all goes for Ron in the next chapter when he wakes up from his impromptu nap. Thanks for leaving a review. It's much appreciated.

LarnerReviewed Chapter: 31 on 4/15/2014
Hmmm. It would appear that this has proved the time for everyone to go overboard in their reactions to events! And Vorondur, for Pete's sake! Certainly he knows far, far better. Although it does appear that Dr. Stoner came prepared for all serious eventualities. It's lucky Ron didn't managed to kill Earnur!

Author Reply: Which just goes to show that even the most stable of us can blow it if provoked enough, whether they know better or not. And yes, Ron is very lucky Kyle was there to save the day for them both. Thanks for leaving a review, Larner. It's appreciated.

One lump, please.

Did some one mention scones, would they be coming with raspberry jam and clotted cream by any chance?

Ooo, cookies too!

(Since this is a virtual tea party, might as well load on the calories!)

Not sure I could sleep in that cliff house, it looks interesting though!

Huggs,
Lynda

Author Reply: Ooh... raspberry jam and clotted cream. Something I miss from when I was living in England. I remember having a creamed tea in Mallaig on the west coast of Scotland overlooking the Isle of Skye. Yum.

KevanaReviewed Chapter: 31 on 4/14/2014
My goodness, what kind of drug did Stoner hit Ron with that could take down an angry Elf that fast? And if he actually decided to carry around a hypo of tranqs just in case of violent Elves at this meeting...dang, dude. You are the kind of guy who will survive the zombie apocalypse, LOL. Not that it's a bad idea. Much as you hate to admit it, they have volatile tempers and Mortals are not fond of being left unarmed, and clearly it helped here. I think I would go for a taser though, heh.

Poor Vorondur. That kind of anger is so scary to experience. Just because he's a psychiatrist, he's certainly not an unfeeling rock. And that INFJ temper can be particularly deadly when out of control. I have no doubt Ron is going to feel horrible about this when he wakes up. I doubt his wife is going to be happy, either, as he already well knows!

Honestly I don't think he was that annoyed with Earnur for dissing Finrod, the culprits probably could have done or said anything wrong and it would have ended up the same way. But I just hope someone's there to help him back from the dark place he fell into.

Finrod appears (*appears*) to be doing better, and thank goodness. But seriously Earnur, did you not learn your lesson about going up against this particular Reborn? It does not end well. I guess everybody's had a long day.

Thank you for the update, Fiondil! I am in beach bum mode now and sneaking away to the coast every chance I get. With sunscreen, now, of course. ;) Hope you're having a bit of spring, finally, and a whole lot of happiness.
-Kevana

Author Reply: Hi Kevana. I think Vorondur might be a Taurus like me, slow to anger but when the dam bursts, watch out, but like a flash flood it's done and over with quickly. I'm sure he's going to feel all kinds of bad when he comes to. I'm sure Holly will help him crawl out of the dark hole he's fallen into. And Eärnur apparently dissing Finrod was just the proverbial straw for Ron at this point. I'm sure he was in a killing mood right from the get-go but this was the line and it'd been crossed.

Because Finrod is generally mild-mannered and easy-going, people tend to suffer selective amnesia where he's concerned and forget that he is first and foremost a prince of Eldamar, a once king of Nargothrond, and one of Morgoth's deadliest enemies. You don't mess with him no how.

Our spring is turning back to winter. We've had 80 degree weather this weekend and tomorrow it will be plunging down into the 40s and eventually the 30s. In fact, I've caught a wretched cold. Poor me. Glad you've got the sunscreen with you. Enjoy the beach and thanks for taking time from your... er... busy life to leave a review. *grin* It's appreciated.
