Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 16 Review(s)
KittyReviewed Chapter: 41 on 6/24/2014
Nice to have some of the Elves in Edhellond together without all the tension that has been so obvious lately. But then, the troublemakers weren't present. Anyway, it sounds like a plan what they have worked out so far. Though I certainly hope their precautions prove to be unnecessary in the end.

I am sorry for Dave, it can't be easy for him to deal with the Elves. Glorfindel is bad enough on his own, but when you add the rest of the bunch ... poor guy.

While the delay is unfortunate, it has to be amazing to see all these caribous crossing. Though I guess I'd rather watch it at a warmer place than the middle of nowhere in the wilds of Alaska ;)

Author Reply: Dave is in an untenable position dealing with the Elves, but he is an Authority, so he has certain power that even Finrod has to respect. And Dave isn't too impressed by the Elves, at least, not publicly, and treats them as he would any citizen of the town, which is all to the good.

And it must indeed be amazing to see such a migration happening right in front of you.

Thanks for leaving a review. I appreciate it.

Finrod is still thinking like someone in charge. Making sure everything is ready for the trip and he also was smart enough to finish the book ;)

I think they should find a puppy to adopt. Maybe a chiweenie. (part Chihuahua and part dachshund) They have a very loud cry and you know none of them could handle to hear and would have it so spoiled... kidding. They don't need that issue.

I would imagine that that many good looking males would have a lot of heads snapping back to get a better look. LOL

Author Reply: Well, he still is nominally in charge while Glorfindel is laid up, so in this instance his actions are appropriate.

Adopt a puppy... yeah, right. LOL!

And the receptionist didn't stand a chance with Glorfindel's smile, either. *grin*

Thanks for leaving a review, Laer. It's appreciated.

..."I was teaching first-year students at the Academy in Vanyamar when you were still trying to figure out how to write your runes."

That has got to go down as the most insufferable remark ever! Daeron outdates Valandur by many many years; yet this egotistical snit... oh fargles! I'd kick him in the shins just to watch him yelp!

And here I only came by to send "The Journey Home" to my Nook. *sigh*

“Loren would lie to God if he thought he could get away with it,”

And there goes the myth that Elves, being more "honorable" than mankind, do not lie. LOL But then again, considering the lying Valar, they learned it early on. LOL

..."forced to down vile herbal potions instead of pills."

Personally, I still DO take the "vile" potions as opposed to pills. Don't trust Western Medicine for naught. Muct rather my herbals. Which is another reason, btw, that I enjoy your herbal remarks. I have several good herbal books I swear by, to the point of "if I were stranded on a desert island..." sort of thing. haha

And, with your event with the caribou I totally lost about 20 minutes or so walking down memory lane. I was caught once on the road and ended up surrounded by several hundred head of cattle on a drive to better pastures. Nothing like having steer stop to decide if you are interesting, then mark your small VW car... yeah, you KNOW what I mean!!! It was a warm summery day and I sat there with the window rolled down and an occassional horned head would push its way in to check me out. I could only sit there as the cowpunchers laughed in their saddles and wait for the herd to move on. LOL what a day!

I haven't met Alex and Derek yet, (must read Academy 2!) but they seem like affable Mortals to put up with the Elves and their crap. haha

Great chapter, Fiondil!

Author Reply: Hi MikoNoNyte. Actually, in my universe, Valandur and Daeron are essentially from the same generation. They both remember Cuiviénen and the Great Migration. The only difference is that Valandur continued on to Valinor while Daeron remained behind in Beleriand. So, while Val's statement sounds arrogant and all, it is more teasing than anything, as between friends, which is what they are.

It would help if you actually read this story in order. That way, the characters would make sense to you in terms of their motivations and history. Enjoy "The Journey Home" though and thanks for leaving a review. I appreciate it very much.

“Loren would lie to God if he thought he could get away with it,” Dave shot back. “That guy has a knack of not saying anything by saying something totally inane but you think he’s actually saying something until you stop long enough to really listen to what he’s not saying.”
This is masterful *g*. Dave has Glorfindel pegged and I love Nick's and Finrod's reaction to that bit of nonsense. Finrod really needs to learn how to deal with mortal authority.
Vorondur and Daeron's exchange shows that there are still prickly feelings between the Wiseman and Valinor elves. I don't think Vorondur meant it as bad as Daeron heard it.
That trip to Fairbanks was more eventful than I would have guessed. I didn't think of Caribou migration when I thought of what could delay them.
I just hope that the reunion is not as full of fireworks as it could be. They don't need more bad feelings between them.

Author Reply: I'm glad you like Dave's analysis of Glorfindel. *grin* And he certainly does have our favorite balrog-slayer pegged to a T. Finrod is too used to being Authority to know how to act when other types of Authority walk through the door, but I'm sure he'll learn eventually.

And I think you mean Valandur and Daeron and no, he doesn't mean it as bad as it sounds. These two are of the same generation and are good friends. Val is merely teasing Daeron as friends sometimes do, though to outsiders it may sound like something else.

And in Alaska, anything can happen to delay a trip.

Thanks for reviewing, obsidianj. I appreciate it.

He’ll be dead tired long before you arrive.
I had a double take when I read this. You see, my brain left off the word "tired"...

...only to have the feeling reinforced when I read, He is too weak yet and the journey will probably kill him anyway. and the answering Probably. LOL! Is this what they call foreshadowing?

OTOH, a bored Reborn is a dangerous Reborn, as people are so fond of saying.

I missed a few of the undercurrents (like the choice of which healer went), but then I've been tired lately, so that suits as well as anything for an explanation.

For one so wise, Finrod does need to get a clue about how to deal with Authority effectively. He seems to do well with the Common Man, after all.

Have I mentioned how much I like Nick? Guy's got a good head on his shoulders.

Glad the road trip went (relatively) well. Reminds me of a difficult winter drive we had recently. We managed to hit a six-hour window (4pm to 10pm) when the pass was open -- they were doing "avalanche maintenance" in the afternoon, which we waited out in a restaurant at the last exit before we began to climb the pass, and a tree fell across the Interstate about two hours after we managed to get through, in heavily falling snow (I believe it snowed two feet that night) and closed the pass until well into the next morning.

The five-and-a-half hour trip that we drove in good weather a couple weeks ago, took about 13 hours in the winter weather six weeks ago. Quite the difference. I can really identify with your travellers.

Author Reply: Hi Lindelea. Yes, dropping a word can give a sentence a whole different meaning. LOL!

Laurendil is or was Finrod's paxman way back when and a trusted warrior. Even though he's given up his sword for healing, he still knows how to fight. Plus, he's one of Finrod's Death Sworn, so they are linked in a way that would not be true with Vardamir, who has no fighting skills except those of a healer.

When one is Authority, it can be difficult to remember how to act when one is not. Finrod will have to learn eventually, but at least he's savvy enough to recognize that he might have screwed up with Dave here. Nick is pretty cool and a lot of fun to write.

I suspect that a lot of readers can sympathize with this particular road trip and could share their own road-trip horror stories.

Thanks for leaving a comment. I appreciate it very much.

Well that was the easy part.

Checks seatbelt on comfy chair at cliff house, gets ready to buckle up 'caus I think we are in for a bumpy ride.

Waves to Rikki!

Huggs,
Lynda

Author Reply: We'll see how bumpy the ride is soon enough, Lynda. Hugs back.

I rejoice that the trip went as well as it did, as it could have been far worse. Now, to find out why Alex and Derek needed to be along. Do they know some of the SCA members, or will Alex recognize someone unsavory?

Author Reply: Well, it went better than it could have, that's for sure. And Alex and Derek would have been coming down to Fairbanks anyway. This way, they hitched a ride. Thanks for reading and reviewing, Larner. I appreciate it.

I want to go on a road trip now. Trust this bunch to get stuck in the middle of a caribou migration!

I would love to see what goes down with Valandur's first language class. Maybe he could even step up and take over teaching that, freeing up some of Glorfindel's time, if it goes well.

Great to have Alex and Derek back in action! I know they're busy with their own lives by this point in the story, but it's still good to see them from time to time. Happy that Laurendil is back, too, he's one of my favorites of your OCs.

“Loren would lie to God if he thought he could get away with it,” Dave shot back.

*undignified snort*

Are the tusked monsters wooly mammoths? Elves hunting mammoths, wow.

And dun-dun-duuuuuuun, moment of truth. Friday is going to be brilliant, I can't wait.

Love the update, so much going on in this chapter! Thanks for posting it and I'm glad things seem to be calming down with the site, now.

Have a beautiful week full of good things!
-Kevana

Author Reply: Hi Kevana. We won't see Valandur's first language class but we'll hear about it when Glorfindel and the gang return to Wiseman.

Yes, the tusked monsters are wooly mammoths. You can read about them hunting one in my Fiondil's Tapestry story, "MARCHES: Crossing the Ice".

And we'll see just how things go when Glorfindel and Vorondur finally come face-to-face with the Twins and Serindë.

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

Nick certainly is an insightful person - and he is certainly right that Glorfindel looks upon the Twins as his own sons - and no doubt they return the sentiment!
So Alex and Derek are also wanted on this trip? Just what sort of plans are the Valar hatching just now?
I see ron is using his Dad-fu on Loren - and it's working, too!

It's party time again in the cliff house, I see. I'm definitely looking forward to Friday. In the meantime, here's a little vid while we wait: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtwdCVBWo0o

Author Reply: Hi Sunny. Nick is pretty insightful. Alex and Derek were already planning on coming down to Fairbanks, but going with the Elves has proved useful to the Elves in finding the Twins and Sarah. And yeah, Ron is definitely in Dad-fu mode here. *grin*

Thanks for your comments and for the vid. They're both appreciated.

That chapter was exhausting to read, and reminded me of every road trip I've ever been on: "miles and miles of miles and miles".

I love the way they had all of Glorfindel's objections and anticipated objections all lined up like ducks in a row. They know him well, don't they?

Looking forward to Friday!

Author Reply: This chapter was exhausting write, Dreamflower. LOL! And they certainly know their Glorfindel, don't they? *grin* Thanks for reviewing. It's much appreciated.
