Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 12 Review(s)
KittyReviewed Chapter: 46 on 6/24/2014
Now Valandur has a strange way of teaching Quenya, lol. No wonder he's enjoying himself so much!

Glorfindel certainly made crystal clear why the way things were going lately is unacceptable. Let's see if that is going to help or if they need more lessons.

I'm glad Elladan, Elrohir, Vardamir and Eärnur made up; let's hope things go better between them, too.

Author Reply: Valandur is pretty cool. I wish I'd had him as a teacher.

Hopefully, now that the air has been cleared on many issues and levels, things will ease a bit between the various elven groups. We'll have to wait and see.

Thanks for reading and reviewing, Kitty. I appreciate it.

A lot that needed to be talked out is done in this chapter.

Glorfindel has been doing a lot of apologizing and forgiving lately, maybe a bit too much, but for everyone's sake it needed to be done.

Eärnur’s being cute. Don't know what got into him earlier on, but he seems more like the character he was in the earlier series now.

Looks like the Valinor gang made quite a mess of things when Amroth was in charge.

Fionwën added a duster to his attire? Must have taken that from Námo...I wonder what exactly he did to sent the lost sheep home again.

Valandur is a kind of his own. Still he has some point, swear words are an important aspect of any culture and not one you learn in a class most of the time.

- “Oh, it had something to do with reproduction,” -
*snickers* But really, my mom would have loved this if she had the English to understand. She loves this kind of creative descriptions of swear words in a way they won't say anything offering at all

Well, that's quite a lecture the Elves have been getting, Glorfindel and Finrod take no prisoners here.

Ah, who needs painkillers or even Elven healers when you have your own Maia attendant?

From your lips to the Valar’s ears really gets a new meaning if it's said to Fionwë who's going off to report to Manwë.

Nice and quiet ending, so why am I hoping for more storms to come *snickers*
(literrally, it seems some bad wether is coming my way here)

Author Reply: Hi FV_Whisper. It is better to forgive and Glorfindel knows it. Eärnur has had a hard lesson driven home and is trying to mend his ways and not be quite as arrogant, especially toward Mortals and their ways. Fionwë is wearing the duster for appearances sake, of course. And Valandur is one of a kind, that's for sure. *grin*

You should know me by now: there's always a storm in the offing. LOL! Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it.

And a lot of things that needed to be said are finally said! Perfect chapter title too.

Elf Academy is taking off, that is a *lot* of applications if I remember the numbers correctly from EA II. You have to wonder about the implications there given the academy's true purpose.

D'aww, Melyanna and Daeron.

True highlight of this chapter, though? Valandur's language class. That's gotta be the best icebreaker I've ever heard. I had kind of hoped Val would love teaching again and it's cool to see he did enjoy it enough to want to take it over for Glorfindel.

Expletive inflexation is the best thing (I had no idea there was a term for it!) You can't ever remember anybody teaching you how to do it, you just sort of know where in the word it's supposed to fit.

I'm so glad Finrod and Glorfindel got the point across that the others have to be ready to step up when someone is out of commission, temporarily or permanently. That's a huuuuuge weakness to be carrying.

This almost feels like you could stick an "End of Book I" here. With so much wrapped up now, there's only one way for things to go from here. Mwahaha.

Great chapter!
-Kevana

Author Reply: Hi Kevana. Well, you're right that this chapter does have an "End of Book I" feeling to it and we do shift our focus away from the Elves to Alex starting in the next chapter.

And there's a term for everything if you just know where to look. *grin* It's true that no one actually teaches you how to do expletive infixation, but we learn by example and someone somewhere decided to be creative in his or her language and it was picked up by others and passed along.

Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it very much.

Ah... there's nothing like lounging in a Starbucks far from home, missing those who stayed behind but enjoying catching up on a little good reading to go along with the occasional sip of coffee.

Now if I could just figure out how to incorporate the coconut oil into the coffee like I do in my blender at home, I would be almost perfectly content in this moment... Just stirring it in doesn't stir it in very well.

Looking forward to tomorrow's installment.

Author Reply: Hi Lindelea. Sounds like you're having a grand time. I'm assuming you enjoyed the chapter, but since you didn't actually say anything about the chapter, that's just a guess. :-) Hope you like the next chapter equally as well. Enjoy your vacation.

Helyanwë is doing better and I hope she understands what he is tiring to say to her. I fear she will never survive another parting like the last one. And as for the elves acting like mortals...well we are a bit younger than them...so :P~

I still think they need a dog. That will give them all something to spoil and love and...wait. No...that was us. And we got one. Never mind then ;)

I know it isn't all over with yet, but I do hope this has given them all something to think about. Glad that they have a calm before the storm. Can not wait to see the reactions from the rest of the elves when the "surprise" happens!

Author Reply: Hi Laer. No, this isn't over, but at least some things have been resolved between them so they can move on and face whatever comes without so much emotion. We'll see how they all react to the "surprise" soon enough. Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

These were some long overdue discussions and apologies. Let's hope the lessons stick for longer this time. I still sense some more or less unconscious arrogance in resenting a 'dressing down' from a Mortal from Ernie and Mir.
I think some of it comes from the struggle to not lose ones identity when everything is still strange. These elves from Valinor got plunked down into a Mortal society more or less unprepared for what that means. They have to change their names, which to me is a biggie. I never realized how much of 'me' is connected with my name until I changed it. They are here only a few months, which for elves that are immortal and have all the time in the world is just the blink of an eye. The natural reaction is to cling to familiar stuff and draw a line between yourself and your own group and 'them', in this case everyone else, especially the mortals.
Glorfindel and the Wiseman elves were living in the Mortal society for so long that they are used to change their names and go with the rapid changes of human societies as the centuries go by. The Valinorean elves are new to this kind of stuff and some take it harder than others.

Author Reply: Hi obsidianj. Your analysis of the situation is very close to the mark. These Elves do have a lot of adjustments to make and they're being forced to do so at such a rapid pace that they probably don't know if they're coming or going. Some are doing better than others (Finrod, for instance), but all are facing situations for which they've been underprepared, and really, how do you adequately prepare for such things anyway? Anyway, we'll see how things go from here on out. Hopefully, many lessons have been learned by them all.

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

After the turmoil of the last few weeks this quiet must seem doubly blest. And I so hope that the peace lasts for a time, and that most of the necessary lessons have been learned.

Now--to see if the ring found in the pawn shop is Glorfindel's, and if it leads to the capture of the relevant suspects.

Author Reply: The peace might last for a bit but not for long. We'll learn more about the fate of Glorfindel's ring eventually and about his attackers. Thanks for reviewing, Larner. I appreciate it.

I'm recognizing so many names from Elf, Interrupted! It's making me more interested to read the rest of the sequel.

I'm glad they're working things out. It's about time. Now I'm looking for the next curveball.

~Tortoise

Author Reply: Hi Tortoise. I'm glad you're recognizing the names of people from Elf, Interrupted. A lot of readers tried to guess who came with Finrod and were happy when some of their favorite characters showed up.

And a curveball is coming up. LOL!

Thanks for leaving a review. I appreciate it very much.

So apologies are given and accepted all around. Still, I wonder just how much Vardamir and Eärnur have learned from the fiasco, since they found it so deeply embarrassing to be reprimanded by a Mortal. So it's true that the two of them are Master Healers, certified so by Irmo himself. But as yet they are raw beginners when it comes to Mortal medicine, and the procedures and technologies that have been developed outside Aman. And while I guess Stoner might find Elven healing magic useful when he learns how it might be applied, he certainly wouldn't be likely to trust it as yet. And the only Elven healers who at this point in time can be trusted to truly merge Elven healing magic with modern medical technology are the Twins and Vorondur - who are doctors themselves!
So Glorfindel has delivered his scoldings - let's hope it sticks! It sounds as if just about all the Elves have been misbehaving. The one who very obvously hadn't, Valandur, clearly have had an immense amount of fun in his Quenya class. And since Glorfindel is clearly not up to fighting him over those classes, I guess he gets to keep giving them.
I wonder what he is going to make of the SCA? (He'll surely be in the thick of that as well!)

Author Reply: Well, it has to be galling for them to be so reprimanded but I think they realize that they deserved it and don't hold it against Stoner or anyone else. Now that they've gotten the arrogance knocked out of them and by other Elves, not Mortals, I think they'll settle down and become good students of modern Mortal medicine.

Valandur is the oldest of the Valinórean Elves, of the same generation as Daeron, actually, and he's always gone his own way and done his own thing, as you know from the story I told of his earlier days so he's not likely to get involved with the "politics" of the others. And I'm sure that once he's introduced to the SCA he'll take to it like a duck to water. *grin*

Thanks for commenting. It's much appreciated.

Family. That should say it all between the elves, be they Wiseman or Valinoran ones. They laugh together, live together and fight each other. Then they come to some kind of peaceful existence - until the next time something happens and the whole situation fires off again. Glorfindel has forgiven people a lot better than I would have and he has pushed others to do the same. I like the way you have shown that Finrod and Glorfindel are co-leaders here, when Finrod lets Glorfindel admonish the elves for their actions while he was in the hospital. There were some truths in that speech that are very true in this life. If he or Finrod are killed in the conflict, who will take over the elves. Good chapter to end the week.

Have a good weekend! I'm off to go weed the garden and fight the squirrels from eating all my tomatoes.

Author Reply: Yep. Family. Can't live with them, can't live without them, even if "family" is something you make up with others when your natural family is no longer available.

Glorfindel has had millennia upon millennia to perfect the art of forgiveness, so it's no wonder that he is able to do so as readily as he has.

I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter. Have a good weekend yourself and thanks for reviewing. It's always appreciated.
