Interesting interpretation of Thorongil's reason for leaving Gondor. I can't say that I'm thrilled with the concept of Denethor nurturing love for Thorongil; since I'd find it more realistic if Denethor were not one of the many characters devoted to Strider-Aragorn-Thorongil-of-Many-Names. But it is certainly a well-written tale.

Awesome and perceptive story. Your treatment of Denethor as at once envious of Thorongil and yet so lonely for a friend. He fears that Finduilas would prefer Thorongil if she had the choice and that poisons his possibilities for love and a good marriage. It is sad that he cannot imagine Thorongil NOT wanting Finduilas. He so obviously doesn't believe Thorongil's description of his own love. And then there is Finduilas herself whose deep perception of the obstacle that Thonongil presents in the fulfillment of her marriage. So very sad, knowing how it all plays out.

Undeserved envy is a difficult burden. How painful it must have been for Thorongil to realize that Denethor envied him when it was needless, that he feared what Thorongil might truly be and the deeper love he bore for his lady, even though he did not hope at the time to have that love returned when Denethor could not feel quite the same.

And how can he express this perception of envy to Denethor's son?

I love the skills of perception Finduilas displays.

The title is most apt.
