Downpour  by Grey Wonderer 172 Review(s)

Aaawww...this was another part that I forgot about. Certainly, this would have brought back unpleasant memories for Frodo.

Author Reply: I should think so. Nothing worse than having old memories brought to light bey recent events and I am very sure that this situation did just that to Frodo.

I'm so glad that Merry is safe at Bag End now.
Love the puppy, by the way.

Author Reply: I love dogs and I figured if Farmer Maggot could have them, then there must be others around. I was glad to get Merry to Bag End as well. My first time through this, he almost arrived too quickly. I am forever shrinking the Shire to make it fit my plot lines. Luckily, at the time, Lindelea reminded me of the distance and so it took poor Merry and his puppy a bit longer to reach Frodo.

Now we are getting to all the complications. I feel so sorry for Saradoc and Esmeralda, knowing what's coming, and Pippin, too.

Author Reply: It is so interesting to have someone reading this again because I had forgotten some of it myself. LOL Thank you for all of these wonderful reviews. I am enjoying taking a look back at this one and as always, finding things that I wish I had done differently. Do you do that? After a time, I want to re-write some of the older ones for some reason. LOL

You know, I had forgotten all about the tree episode. I wonder now if that was in the back of my head when I wrote "It Takes a Took"? If it was, thanks!
You should not apologize for that charming little song. I thought it both very hobbity and very childlike, like a real nursery song.
And it is always good to have songs in hobbit fics.

Author Reply: I was nervous about including the song but convinced myself that I should do so. I am pleased that you enjoyed it as you have so many wonderful tales that include songs. I have neglected that part of Tolkien's work in my own fictions. I am just not a very musical person. I love to listen to it, but have no real talent for it. This little song is as close as I have come to music in my stories I believe. I have an unfinished story with a song in it, but it will likely never see the light of day as it stalled out some time ago.

I like this little glimpse into Bag End.
I have to say one thing: movie-verse made more sense to me on Frodo taking four years to leave instead of two, for one main reason.
I am a calligrapher.
I cannot possibly fathom that Frodo was able to copy out the entire Red Book in only two years. Think about copying out the entire LotR by hand. At the very least he would have ended up suffering carpal tunnel syndrome and been unable to finish.
However, it's JRRT's world...still...

Author Reply: I have no idea how anyone writes anything by hand at this point. The computer has completely ruined me. I can't imagine doing the entire tale in calligraphy even if I had fourteen years! LOL And add to that the missing finger. It all seems quite impossible, but Tolkin must have thought otherwise.

This is so tense and vividly described! Poor Merry!
And it was so like him to see to his ponies first!

Author Reply: I had trouble with this when I wrote it because there is almost no dialogue. I do much better if I can let the characters do the explaining rather than having to rely on my own words. I figured that Merry's first thought s would be with his ponies too. Thanks for the review!

I decided to re-read this, after reading your latest, and realized it was one of the early fics I read, before I learned how to leave reviews.
It's just as sweet and suspenseful now as the first time around--even though I already *know* what's going to happen...

Author Reply: Why, thank you! It is always such a pleasant surprise to find someone reading an older story. I appreciate the review and am glad that it holds up on a second reading. I hope you enjoy it and that you for the review!

I have been in the mood for a good hobbity story lately but wanted it to be one that I knew I liked so I re-read this one! Such a wonderful story, I admire how you would switch from the dark and sad things to the humor and problems Frodo, Sam and Rose were having with Merry being a patient. The last bit I found stressful the first time and this time as well. Poor Merry finding out that everyone thinks he is dead and wanting to run off right away. Good thing that others are there to look out of those in a state. That goes for alot of characters in this story. It makes all the difference to have someone who is a little more level headed around than you to help one get through a tough situation! Anyway, loved it again!

Author Reply: Thank you so very much! You don't know how lovely it is to hear that someone enjoyed a story of this length enough to read it again. I appreciate that you took the time to leave a review and thank you so much for all of your kind words!

A really great story! I liked that pippin took over while merry's father couldn't cope.
An excellent sstory!

Author Reply: Thank you and thank you for reviewing this one. I figured if Pippin didn't have something to do he'd never be able to stand the loss of Merry and so I put him to work while Saradoc grieved.

Oh, this was wonderful! I can't even think of a word to describe how good this is! I LOVED reading this, and I am printing it off so that I can reread it whenever. Thank you for writing this, and keep writing! :)

Author Reply: WOW! Thank you for that lovely review and I am very pleased that you enjoyed this one. It was the first story that I ever wrote about the hobbits after the quest. Before this, I had always written them much younger. Thank you for taking the time to review this one. Drop by any time.
