Warm Beds and Warmer Heads  by Thundera Tiger 16 Review(s)

A truly charming tale, with great characterizations and humor. There's a touch of bittersweet sadness though, in that the romantic Halbarad won't live to see Aragorn and Arwen wed. How Aragorn must have regretted the loss of his loyal friend and kinsman at the Battle of Pelennor. Thank you for bringing both Aragorn and Halbarad to life.

Author Reply: You are very welcome, and I'm glad you liked the tale. I was thinking about that, actually, and was rather sad that Halbarad never got to see his friend finally married. I suppose Halbarad would respond by saying this makes the tale more dramatic, but you're right. It's still very bittersweet.

Brilliant, especially "I’m of half a mind to make this fire even larger by adding you to it, so I suggest you hold your tongue and be silent!"
Well done

Author Reply: I'm glad you liked it! That line was one of several rather obscure allusions to the title of the fic and I'm rather fond of it. Thanks so much for taking the time to review!

Wonderful!
Very well done, especially with that "questionably attained ale" !!

Author Reply: It's not a male-bonding experience unless there's some ale to get it started. And thankfully, Halbarad is wise enough to realize this. Pass the drinks 'round again. They're on the house. Thanks for the review!

This is great! I love your Halbarad; you should write more stories involving him! I laughed my head off with this story, thanks for sharing it!

Author Reply: You are very welcome, and I'm glad you like Halbarad. Allow me to direct you to Bryn, who writes a wonderful version of Halbarad. I don't know if I'm going to indulge in Halbarad much more, but there are a few stories coming to mind.

A very sweet and charming story. Is nice to see Aragorn loosen up and let his metaphorical hair down. Also amusing to see his Elvish upbringing working against him. Given the Elvish distaste for smoking, what must it have been like when he brought that habit into Imladris? Ewwww. And the wonderful foolish romanticism of our two heroes! I like Halbarad's sense that all ought to work out in properly dramatic fashion. I can imagine that if he didn't have to be a ranger (that is, if the Numenoreans still lived in Numenor), he'd be the biggest fop Arda had ever seen.

Author Reply: Oh, you are evil. Now I've got this image of a horde of Rangers descending upon Rivendell for medical aid and then contaminating the fair air of Imladris with pipe-weed. Talk about a plot bunny. Not funny. Not funny at all.

But I forgive you, if only for the image of Halbarad wandering around Numenor with a giant feather sticking out of his hat. I'm not sure why fop translated into that image, but it did. And for some reason, he's occasionally sporting a feather boa. Go figure. Anyway, I decided that someone in the Rangers should have a different perspective on romantic situations as well as a sense of the dramatic. And since Aragorn has always struck me as practical, pragmatic, and methodical, I gave that role to Halbarad. He's like the other half of the balancing act.

That was hilarious! At first I couldn't even remember who Halbarad was, but I like him. It was good to see Aragorn before the Fellowship, doing ranger duties. So often all we hear about before that is his childhood in Rivendell or how he met Legolas. But he was a ranger for a long time, and I can imagine he had many nights around the fire. It's good he had a friend like Halbarad to bring him ale and tease him. Everybody needs a friend like that.

Author Reply: I wondered, actually, when I wrote this fic if many people would remember Halbarad. He's a rather obscure character, and I think he's got maybe a total of five lines in RotK (which is actually quite a few compared to Elladan and Elrohir, who between them have a grand total of one). But I've always enjoyed the thought of Halbarad as someone that Aragorn can relax around. And I'd be willing to bet that Halbarad was the one who introduced Aragorn to pipe-weed, too.
