A New Kind of Courage  by Auntiemeesh 150 Review(s)

This chapter was awesome. :D

Finally, they began to speak of the things that lay closest to their hearts, concern for Frodo and Sam, wonder at the idea they could possibly have won this unwinnable war, and their joy, in the midst of this chaos, to have survived everything and still have each other.
awwww~! this made me so excited and just yes, I so agree with this statement and makes me love hobbits all the more. So glad that Tolkien had them all return to the Shire safe and whole--it would've been horrible had one of them died and i just dont' think i could bear that.

I love your concern that you show throughout the chapters that Merry and Pippin have for each other-- both of them are tired from the Quest and hurt from the Quest and their looking after each other is so rightly portrayed and just so well-written.

Now, you try shouting at Frodo like that, and he’ll hand you your head on a silver platter, but that’s a different story altogether. I’m much more understanding than dear old Frodo."

Merry was unable to suppress a snort of surprised laughter. "Well, I suppose I’d best keep my temper under tight control around Frodo, then."

"Yes, I suppose you’d best," Pippin agreed with a straight face.

lol i love this observation of which cousin has authority. ;) <3Frodo. Merry still needs to beware of his temper with Frodo. :)

ANd this is my favortie parrt which really made me laugh out loud:

Merry scowled up at his friend. "Is this a new game for you, Aragorn, getting me drunk? Because you are very good at it."

"I take full responsibility for the first occasion," Aragorn answered with a barely suppressed smile. "But I think this one is all on you, my friend."

Poor Merry and what a rascal Aragorn is! In chapter 14, i was already like, Aragorn what are you doing getting Merry drunk when he's been touched by the shadow and such?

lol So great.

Hobbits and wine.... i want more stories like that. hehe :D

And Aragorn surely knows and has an instinct to know that Merry is a light-weight and needs tea and soothing drinks in the morning--lol... what a mind-reader. :D

Author Reply: My favorite part about writing this story was getting the contrast between those really dark, serious moments, and the light-hearted face that hobbits present when times are grim. All the little games that Merry and Pippin play to keep themselves and each other from falling headlong into the dark are really important.

As for Aragorn setting Merry drunk, it was an underhanded trick, but it was also necessary. Merry needed to talk but his controls were so rigid he wasn't about to say anything. Aragorn needed to play a little dirty in order to help Merry.

Hobbits and wine.... i want more stories like that.

Yes, I like the hobbits and wine combo myself, lol. If you haven't already read 'A Picnic' you may want to check it out. Just a lighthearted bit of drunken hobbit fluff without the dark undertow.

I didn't know you were at SoA until now so will continue reviewing from here. :)

I love your Aragorn so very much--his concern adn care for the hobbits is just so wonderfully described. And yes, you made me love him as well. :)
I loved his conversation with Merry about Pippin's nightmares--i could imagine Merry being frustrated on not being the one to comfort PIppin. :)

And the last part where Merry pledged service to Eomer and the Rohirrim was so wonderfully written...i so loved it and now love Merry more than ever before. =) :D

Author Reply: Poor Merry. All he wants to do is protect Pippin but sometimes Pippin's desire to protect Merry in turn gets in the way, and this is one of those cases. I'm glad you liked the pledge ceremony. It's one of those little moments that must have happened at some point, that Tolkien just brushed over.

So much to love in this chapter! Aragorn's talk with Merry, Pippin having watched over Merry most of the night, Merry learning to fight the Shadow, Eomer's understanding, Pippin's joy at Frodo and Sam's recovery, the "shoving" match, Merry's conspiring to get Pippin to take a nap (even though he was really in need of one himself!). I was right! You finished the story during that busy period when I wasn't able to read anything.

Author Reply: Thanks! I'm glad you were able to catch up and read the rest of this, and that you liked it. :)

*sigh* What a wonderful ending! You did the splendidly! They way Merry fought off the shadow in his dreams and was able to defeat it was great! Gives such a wonderful out look for the rest of Merry's life.

I'm sorry the story is over but it was well done and fun to follow! I'm glad they are all together! The last paragraph was beautiful and was such a wonderful idea. Thank you for the story! It was lots of fun!

Author Reply: Thank you so much for all the lovely reviews you've left along the way. I'm just glad I made it to the end (there were times when I felt like chucking the whole thing in the trash bin), as I would have hated to leave it dangling for anyone.

What a lovely ending! Our four hobbits together again, feasting and toasting. Merry's new courage will serve him well in the coming years, and he seems to have finally mastered it with that fight with the Shadow. Well done!

Author Reply: Thank you!

Thank you for your great stor "A New Kind Of Courage." And congratulations on finishing it! I have been reading it through the links you so kindly provide to Quill and Ink.

It was set during one of my favorite time periods, and of course, it featured lovely hobbits getting better after the quest. Very enjoyable and well written.

Thank you and happy holidays.

Author Reply: Happy holidays to you as well! Thank you for the lovely comment. I'm glad you found the story and enjoyed it. :)

Wow.

I'm speachless.

This story is-was just....amazing. I really mean that.

I asked you the same question for weeks on end, and each week I would check daily for an update. Each update was better than the last.

As readers, we followed Merry through his fears, regrets, guilt, and love, and we both pitied and were in awe of him.

As a writer, you did a phemonomel job, and I must say that I think this is truely one of the best fanfiction stories ever copleted =)!

I am SO sad that this is over, but at least now my question has been answered: YES Merry is for the most part over the shadow. I'm satisfied with Aragorn's answer, even if Merry may not be....

"Merry smiled, finally understanding what Faramir had meant. He looked at his friends and felt his heart bursting with love and a great joy that they were all together once more, but certain now in the knowledge that even if they should be separated again in the future, in their hearts they would always be together. "

Once again, WONDERFUL job, and hopefully I'll be reviewing another one of your fabulous stories soon....

~Misty =)

Author Reply: This is one of the nicest comments I've received for anything I've written. I twas thinking of you when I wrote the end bits, finally freeing Merry from the Shadow. I'm so glad you approved. :)
