The Day After  by Thundera Tiger 15 Review(s)

Interesting meditation on the nature of time for elves and how Legolas's friendships with mortals might have changed that. I suppose he would react to the contrast between his time and theirs, and then also, he'd see them aging. That would give him quite a different sense of it.

I'm always glad to see Gimli too. He often disappears in the face of writers' interest in the friendship between Legolas and Aragorn.

Author Reply: Three cheers for Gimli! I completely agree with you that the dwarf is not enough of a presence in fanon right now. I don't mind the stories about Legolas and Aragorn, but I wish more people would remember that there were _Three_ Hunters. Not two. And that Aragorn wasn't the one Legolas took with him to the Undying Lands. Ah well. I'll stop now before I descend into full rant mode. Thanks for the review and also for the words on Gimli! Poor dwarf. We really ought to do something about him.

A wonderful story, capturing exactly the thoughts I have often had about how Legolas must react to the idea that he will gradually lose his dearest mortal friends over time. I have often thought that every time he sees mortals grieving over a loss, he must ponder what it will mean when he begins to lose his own friends. Gimli's concern and thoughts were presented masterfully, and perfectly in character and in his voice. I can see that this concern might have been what would prompt him to forsake Middle-earth and follow his friend to Valinor someday.

Author Reply: Ooo, now there's an interesting perspective! Living closer to mortals now, Legolas would be exposed to death by aging, and I wonder if he used those first experiences to prepare him for the first of his friends to die. Fascinating idea! As for Gimli, thank you for words! The idea of the dwarf following Legolas to Valinor was always in the back of my head while writing this, but I wasn't certain if any of those thoughts made it into the story. I think part of the reason Gimli left was to make certain that Legolas didn't look back. How successful he was is up for debate, but I think that was a motivating factor. Many thanks for a very insightful review!

This is a rather poignant story. The deep friendship and love between Gimli and Legolas is plain to see, but it's easy to forget that they both paid a price for that friendship, especially how it changed them.

Legolas's changed perception of time is interesting - and for one who is immortal, very sad. Personally, though, I feel that once he sailed with Gimli to Valinor he (eventually) regained more of an elven perspective.

Author Reply: I love the idea of balance, and it's my opinion that if you want something good, you have to give something up to get it. And that idea led me to this story. I'll let you keep your idea of Legolas regaining that elven perspective. It makes for a happier ending. Personally, I don't think he ever really does. But that's my opinion and certainly up for debate! I'm just more inclined to the bittersweet endings. Thank you for reviewing!

Your experiment was most successful, IMHO and a very intriguing theory.

Gimli's voice was perfect for the tale.

Author Reply: Thank you! I'm not nearly as antsy about this experiment as I was when I first posted it. Or when I was in the process of working on it. And I'm very glad you approve of Gimli's voice, which was one of the experiment's major components. Thanks for the review!

I especially loved the last lines...

Author Reply: *beams* I especially love that _you_ love the last lines, because the last lines and the very first line were the only concrete beginnings I had for this fic. The middle section was just a way to get from one to the other. Well, it's more than that now, but in the beginning, that's how it started.
