A Meeting in the Woods  by Thundera Tiger 13 Review(s)

Well, it's great - even if it pains me to admit it -. I love unlikely pairings and that's a good one. Are you perhaps finally going to stop your griping about not being able to do hobbits? You do hobbits very well.

Favourite quote of the day: "Had Primula been paying attention, she would have heard a slight note of exasperation in Elladan's last sentence ..." Bilbo can be a pain in the rump, can't he?

BUT, once again, hold true to your purpose and do write updates! May the blessings ...

Author Reply: No, I don't think I'll ever stop griping about the hobbits. They keep scaring me, so I'll keep griping. But I'll try not to grip as loud. ;) And many thanks for the compliment! I'll try to keep the updates coming.

And she was worried about characterisation! Pfft. An excellent story, looking at two rarely-seen characters (especially on their own). I've always liked how you portray the twins - Elrohir as fiery and impulsive, Elladan as thoughtful and introspective (like two sides of their father! ha ...). I don't think I've ever read a story that contained Primula, and I love that her Brandybuck/Tookish side is so vibrant, and so clearly evident in Frodo. *has run out of ways to phrase OMG U RAWK*

Author Reply: Many thanks! I actually just responded to you over in Livejournal, so I'll try not to repeat myself here. But I'm glad you like the twin's separation. I'm trying to keep them close together, but having known several sets of twins, they can be very different in many different ways. And I'm glad you liked Frodo's mother. She impressed me, though I was a bit surprised by some of her more sensible comments. Still, she couldn't have been *too* out there to attract Drogo for a husband, I suppose...

Thundera, I really enjoyed A Meeting in the Woods. Ah, the portent of a chance meeting in Middle-earth... I like the notion that Elrond would send the twins to go ahead of Bilbo on his way home and the fateful little elvish nudge Elladan gives to Primula’s opinion of Drogo. Very nice indeed. I have too many ‘favorite lines to quote them all, but here are a few:

Hair as black as raven feathers framed a face that was youthful but not young. His strong features had a nobility about them that called to mind images of kings and lords from childhood tales.
Wow. A jewel of a description...

The eyes were old. Older than the oldest heirlooms crowding the unused tunnels of Brandy Hall. Older than the oldest antiques hidden in the twisting confusion of the Michel Delving Museum. Ancient eyes. Ancient beyond any hobbit's ability to understand or—
I absolutely agree; the eyes are the window to the soul.

"Oh yes. In fact, I'm…I'm waiting for someone. Many someones. Large someones. My brothers. All of them. They should be along any moment. I believe I hear them now."
LOL!

I liked the eerie moment of prophetic foresight and the dialogue between the twins, and the fact that no one else saw any trace that he had been there. Primula’s awe and Elladan’s amusement make for a light moment, but still the shadow looms. You pulled together a lot of threads of canon for this piece. Well done.

Author Reply: Hey Ithildin! I'm very glad you liked the story, and I'm especially glad you liked Primula's hastily thought up line about large brothers coming to find her. That was my favorite line while writing it, so I'm glad others liked it! As for the foresight, I was hoping it had a very eerie quality about it, especially coming from Primula's POV, so your comments really helped alleviate my concerns on that score. I'm wondering now if I shouldn't have been more subtle about it, or found some way to lead into it better, but I think I'll need more distance between myself and this fic before I can tackle it again. Thanks for the review!
