The Tenth Walker  by Lindelea 17 Review(s)
Kara's AuntyReviewed Chapter: Prologue on 2/2/2009
Hello Lindeleas,
Oh, I'm so glad to see this back at the top of the SoA homepage! I remember it catching my eye a long while ago, but lost track of it (I was a bit of a lurker back in the day - much to my shame, but we live and learn, right?).

This is a chapter that makes me want to kiss Frodo and Sam, but kick the **** out of Ferny. People who abuse animals...well, it wouldn't be christian of me to say what should happen to them. But this lovely chapter is filled with burgeoning hope and beautifully describes the initial interactions of the threesome.

Very enjoyable indeed!

Kara's Aunty.

Author Reply: Nice to hear from you, Kara's Aunty! I've seen your "Bill" story on the GFIC list and here at SoA, and it's on my future "want to read" list--the comments I've seen make me want to read it now but I can't until I finish this Bill story...

It is so nice to take Bill out of that miserable situation and put him in with upright and caring companions. (Won't say much about the situation... but the companions make all the difference!)

Thanks!

Oh, I'm going to like this ... I can tell I will.

"My feet are killing me." Ha!

His descriptions of his former life make me want to join PETA. Poor Bill!

Author Reply: Nice to make your acquaintance!

Poor Bill, indeed! As JRRT observed, he must have been badly treated, to be looking forward to a journey into the wilderness...

Hello Lindelea! I have never read anything from Bill's point of view before. The concept initially sounded interesting, and reading your prologue has only made me more interested. I really enjoyed it; particularly the very 'horsey' way of thinking, and the developing feeling of kinship with Sam. I don't read particularly fast because of other commitments, but I will try to follow this story as an 11th walker. ;-)

Thank you for such an unusual and interesting read.

Author Reply: Hello! Am glad you're joining the walk. Thanks for taking the time to drop a note!

I can tell I'm really going to like this story, Lindelea! I've been meaning to read it for a while now, but sadly pushed it off... until now. I can't wait to play Catch Up! :)

Author Reply: Well, thanks! Glad to hear from you!

'It's almost as if he understands you, Mr. Frodo,' Sam says, wonder in his eyes.

But of course I do.

Oh, wonderful!! And I'm sure the tangle free mane and tail feel like a luxury :)

Author Reply: Oh, Pearl, how did I miss replying to this review?

I know when I get the tangles out of my mane each morning, it definitely feels like a luxury. Or when combing out the wee hobbits' curls, to finally get it all silky and smooth is quite an accomplishment. (They got their hair bobbed for the summer, last week, and I miss the combing (but they don't!) and braiding. Ah well, they got their hair bobbed for swim team *last* summer and it grew out fast enough for French braids by Christmas.

Thanks!

And then Sam came. Practically a pony himself, that one. He doesn't complain, weighed down by his burden. And neither shall I.

*grins with delight* Absolutely wonderful Lin, the whole thing. *hugs*

Author Reply: *hugs back*

Glad to have made you grin! I figure Bill must have been something special, to get all the way to Moria, and then back again by himself. What a journey that must have been!

If Bill as the tenth walker has been done, then I missed it. This is adorable. You have given him quite a personality in just the beginning chapter. I really like this. :-)

Author Reply: Thank you! Ponies do have quite a lot of personality, I've found. They definitely think their own thoughts.

I'm a sucker for a Tenth Walker fic. This one didn't disappoint.

Author Reply: "Hit and Run Reviewer", what a name! You have given me a chuckle today, thanks.

Glad you're not disappointed. Your review came in just as I was trying to decide which story to update, so you can take some credit for the next chapter being added today to this one.

Of course Bill understands! :) I like this! Sam is a bit like a pony, isn`t he? Sturdy and trustworthy and working hard without complaining. No wonder the pony feels a bit of kinship with him. :)

Author Reply: Oh, I'm glad you like it! Yes, I do think Sam is a bit like a pony, and he and Bill certainly strike up a friendship, from what I see in the book.

Thanks!

Ah, very good tale from Bill's point of view. Happy, groomed, cared for for a time, with two at least who seek to give him as much as they can, considering the circumstances.

And the fellow-feeling with Sam, and the identification with him as a possible fellow pony is wonderful.

Author Reply: Ah, thank you. Bill is sort of an offshoot of a joke of sorts, from a couple of years back, when I was tormenting Jodancingtree by writing snippets of a story in reviews of one of her stories, life as seen through the eyes of Pippin's pony Socks.

That one never got published, but a second series of story snippets, while I was reviewing another of her stories, became "Going, Going, Gone".

Yup, Sam is a wonder. Practically equine sometimes, that lad.
