The Day Before  by Thundera Tiger 12 Review(s)
LevadeReviewed Chapter: 1 on 1/10/2006
I had to go read the opposing story after finishing this to get the best sense of what you were saying. I had never stopped to consider how an elf would view time, but I believe you've nailed it, and Gimli's concern (in the other story) is well-founded. It's a sign of their friendship that each thinks of the other first. I cannot imagine how painful it must have been for Legolas to lose Gimli, and for Gimli to know how his friend would feel but be helpless to do a thing about it. Really beautiful, but your stories are always so well-crafted it's always a treat to read them. And...you're right. Time is a gift we shouldn't waste.

Author Reply: Many thanks for the review, and I'm glad you think I nailed an elven view of time. That and the emotions were very difficult in writing this thing. I eventually decided to cheat and get around the entire thing by dredging up this water metaphor, which I considered not inappropriate because it works and because Legolas is preoccupied with the Sea anyway. But it was still slightly cheating. Ah well. I was at my wit's end trying to think like an elf. Not an easy prospect!

As for one thinking of the other, it definitely works both ways and it's something I've been thinking about addressing in another story, but that's far into the future. I have to take care of other things first. Thanks again for the review and for taking the time to tell me what you thought! It means a lot!!!

Excellent! Another wonderful tale! You capture so well the inner thoughts and feelings of the characters. I look forward to more stories from you!
Now, truly this NOT flame, I swear! I love your fics, am a major fan, but I'm just curious and would love to hear your thoughts on something. (forgive my spelling, English not my first language)
I always wonder why it seems that it is always Gimli that is the one "lacking" in so many stories. As if he is losing himself in Legolas's grandeur or something, even when he himself is a strong independent being, even in very good fics he is almost always relegated to "sidekick" or "Legolas' loyal pet Dwarf". Authors always seem to use him as a only vehicle for Elf-worship, having him go on and on about the wonders and beauty of Legolas or the Elves, always fawning over Legolas, unable to seem to do anything unless it "following" Legolas.
To this day I have never read a fic where Gimli takes charge, even for moment!, telling Legolas or Aragorn to do anything like: "Hold up! Aragorn you go that way and meet us at sunset, Legolas, go up to the roof and keep watch while I'll go and check out the perimeter."
Gimli's an intelligent warrior and over a 136 years old, and has lived his own life long before the Fellowship. Yet so many make it seem as if he somehow never "understood" or appreciated beauty or anything in arda until his friendship with Legolas. Which lead me to puzzle lately why so many authors seem to think that because they are so close, it is Gimli that has somehow become the "lesser" of the two (or the lesser of Legolas and Aragorn). Why does no one portray Legolas and Gimli as total and complete equal?
Its always Gimli who is the most profoundly changed because of the Elves, in some way losing himself or somehow becoming "better" simply because he hangs around Legolas. It's never Legolas who is profoundly changed, made better because of his friendship with Gimli or his new found understanding of Dwarves. Thank you for hearing my thoughts (sorry so big!). Ja!

Author Reply: Thank you very much for taking the time to review, and I'm glad you liked the inner thoughts and feelings. That was probably the hardest part of this piece because I was never certain that they were coming out correctly.

In reference to your comments on Gimli (and your English is fine, I could understand everything) I completely agree. There are not enough stories that make good use of Gimli. Often, Legolas is the superior one. Sometimes Gimli is even left out entirely. And I wish I could explain the reasons for that but I honestly don't know why people ignore him. In the companion piece to this particular story ("The Day After") the focus is on Legolas and what he's gained/loss since befriending Gimli, and I've got another set of companion pieces that try to explore both sides of the story. If you're interested in others, I can refer you to Dwimordene over at HASA, Ithilien here at Stories of Arda, Bryn both here and at FF.net, Lamiel over at FF.net, Nimue over at FF.net, and Thevina Finduilas over at HASA. All of them are authors who make an effort to give Gimli his due. I know I'm forgetting someone, too, but those were the authors that jumped to mind when I thought about good Gimli authors. So you might want to investigate them. They're all very, very good.
