Dreams of Gold  by Lindelea 23 Review(s)
BodkinReviewed Chapter: 1 on 3/18/2006
Their captor seems to think he's got a pair of leprechauns under his control - and wants their pot of gold.

Ferdi sounds in a bad way. Tough as he is, and having survived so much, he might need the wits of Farry to help him here.

I hope those who saw them fall aren't convinced they must be dead or they'll never get to them in time to be of help. You've got them in a pretty pickle!

What a nerve-racking start! And very cunningly avoiding names!

I just *love* this! I've been looking forward to hearing of Farry and Ferdi's visit to the South, and now we get a little taste of it! I do hope that RL allows you some writing time again sometime soon--but if it doesn't,I'll be satisfied with the crumbs.

I thought the device in the beginning, leaving the reader to wonder if it was Merry and Pippin or someone else, was extremely clever. And when I discovered that one of the cousins was Farry, I suddenly realized when the story was set!

Poor Tooks, captured by those who have their heads full of legends about "little folk" with treasure. Not only that, but the only previous encounter in the family was years ago, with Gollum (clever, that! by the way.) so of course there isn't going to be much trust there.

And just what does the lad think that halflings do look like? He clearly has not listened all that well to the tales of the Quest--to full up with tales of treasure, I dare say.

And poor Ferdi. Hurt. Again.

I'm really enjoying this!

I can hear Ferdi's thoughts - "Doer of great deeds? No, that's his Da, and if you don't let us go he'll set Troll's Bane in you when he finds out!" Seriously though, it's not too many years since those great deeds, and the stuff of legend already. But now you've got me worried about Pip-lad, and who's got him, not to mention the missing guardsman and one crochety old former steward who's supposed to be along. Will the hobbits be rescued, or will they manage to free themselves using just their wits?

Too normal looking to be taken for Frodo, are they? Oh, how wonderful! I love it, Lindelea! He's heard of Halflings, so at least they do have a chance. The fact they're barefoot and have hairy feet at that does work to their favor, even if they aren't as fair as the Baggins cousin.

Thanks for the giggles this morning--I NEEDED them!

Oh, I'm so glad the hobbits are getting a chance to explain themselves. And what an appropriate St. Pat's day fic!

Ah, it is from Ferdi and Farry go to Gondor! How tantalizing to hear that this is part of a good long tale. I'm grateful that you're giving us this sneak preview, and hopeful that someday RL will allow the full story to be told.

Great fun to hear little bits of the Fellowship's story, woven through the memories of Ferdi and Farry: this is time for their own Adventures, now. I can't help but think both of them are going to come out of this with even more appreciation for what the hobbits before them had to go through. Poor Ferdi, he's really not going to become enamoured of Men this way. His dislocated arm reminds me that he's already had more than enough excitement in his life for the ordinary hobbit, but then he's not really ordinary either. I'm eager to see just how they manage to use their wits to escape from both the physical danger as well as educate yet another person who has quite the wrong ideas about 'little people'.

Author Reply: I do hope RL will allow writing again one of these days. Though it *is* much faster merely to brush the dust off a ripening draft, there are built-in limitations. Especially when the draft is unfinished. But at least this little out-take was complete, and could stand alone.

Poor Ferdi, he really is a walking advertisement for a billboard in the Shire regarding Why Hobbits Ought to Stay at Home. (But we're certainly glad that they don't.)

Thanks!

Ah, just as I thought, lol! It's an echo of sorts of what Merry and Pippin went through and I am very excited about this tale! The situation isn't completely identical of course, but there is enough of likeness to make me remember Tolkien's own words as I read your chapter. :D

Author Reply: Yes, the story could have gone either way, either a rehashing of "The Uruk-hai" or a snippet from "Farry and Ferdi Go to Gondor". But the "Uruk-hai" story doesn't have such potential for parallels with Leprechauns, which was written into the "Gondor" story some months ago.

And it *is* St. Patrick's day, after all.

The Hobbits believed to be leprechauns! Now, that's quite an idea, of course. And the mouth in the pocket remark is indeed quite familiar....

Lovely, Lindelea.

Author Reply: Researching leprechauns has been great fun! In one account, I found that they are about three feet tall and very fond of wearing green and grey. They are supposed to be very clever with their fingers, and can vanish in a twinkling if you take your eyes off them. Oh, and they are very fond of smoking pipes.

Hmmm. Sounds a little familiar.

This is a scary start! No hobbits should be afraid, bound and gagged, in the dark, waking from nightmare to nightmare! I'm not sure if I'm hoping that this is Pippin, with Merry beside him, or if I'm hoping it's not. Because if it is Pippin and Merry, well, they have the experience few other hobbits do of surviving and escaping very dire circumstances, so I have confidence in their skills and cunning, and some hope; however, I don't want my lovely hobbits to be in such dire circumstances in the first place. If it's some other hobbits, less hope and maybe less reason to love them already when I don't know their names (but then again, all hobbits are lovely, aren't they?)

A sapping cliffhanger of an opening, Lindelea!

Author Reply: Definitely agree with you--all hobbits are lovely, and desperate situations just done fit.

Will have to get them out of this rather quickly, I think.
