Dreamflower's Mathoms II  by Dreamflower 788 Review(s)

I aim to be a Merry packer but so often end up like Pippin!!! And it is years since I had a baking spree but as I live in a bed-sit I just have to read , dream and let my mouth water at the smells that are drifting out of the lap-top. I love both ginger and mint!

Author Reply: I think most of us would aspire to be Merrys when we are really Pippins at heart, LOL!

Ah, you know, I love to read about cooking and about recipes just as much as actually doing them!

Well, your stories are really inspiring. It came just into my mind what Pippin might have forgotten - a double dribble, or so I hope ;-)

Somewhere on the way between the White City and Edoras
A party of illustrious folk is slowly riding by.
Among tall soldiers, both of Rohan and Gondor
Rides the King himself, deeply in conversation
With four small figures. Well – three,
The fourth lost in thought.
Suddenly he looks up,
And green eyes
Show pain:
“Merry?”

“Pip!
What’s wrong?”
Another one asks.
“Remember my precious pipe?
Well, I am just relieved
That I did not forget it.
Now, if I only had some pipeweed!”
The second hobbit gives a sigh of exasperation.
“Peregrin Took, remember what I told you days before:
Forgot something important? Well, you won’t borrow anything from me.”

Author Reply: Oh my! That's adorable! You ought to post it where it will be seen, in among your own stories--no one will get to see it here! I love that!

And a perfect double dribble it is, too!

Pippin rolled his eyes. “Merry, you’ve been packed for two weeks, and have been living out of your traveling cases ever since.”

LOL! That's my Merry! Maybe one reason why I like Merry so much is that in some respect he acts like I would. No, I don't pack a fortnight in advance, but soon enough and I like to have everything planned ;-)

I would really like to see, if Pippin indeed forgot to pack something important.
And I would love to have one or two hobbits here and show them the way to my kitchen :)

Author Reply: Yes, Pippin's teasing of Merry rather fell by the way, but he was quite right. Merry does tend to anticipate, and too prepare to the inth degree.

I wouldn't be surprised if Pip did forget something--he'd be reluctant to say anything if he did though, after all the teasing.

Haha! Now here is something they should have put in the last movie! There I had watery eyes from the time Sam helped Frodo up the mountain all the way through to the credits. It would have been a lighthearted scene to see all four hobbits (taking out the bakers hats I was imagining, hehe.) working and laughing in the kitchen. Very cute! And the recipi! Very clever Dreamflower!
Namarie & God bless!

Author Reply: Well, in the movie they did not show the time the hobbits lingered in Minas Tirith before they left for home, so we can just imagine it.

And the recipe is quite good!

I can just see Merry packing a fortnight early - and Pippin ramming his things in a bag at the last minute. And Sam using tissue paper when he folds things.

But a day in the kitchen is such a hobbity way to spend their last day in Minas Tirith - although the results won't last their friends long as mementoes of their time with hobbits.

Author Reply: *giggle* I should say you've got them all pegged pretty well. And Frodo packing early, and thinking he's remembered everything, only to have Sam come along behind him with the items he's forgotten!

I did want them to have a hobbity time, to cheerily anticipate the trip, and have fun with the baking. But you are quite right--those four will be remembered with fondness long after the gingersnaps are gone.

A lovely, jolly, homey moment! and another recipe :) Most excellent!

Author Reply: "Lovely, jolly, homey"--my favorite hobbity adjectives! I thank you so much!

Is everyone packed indeed? And they ALL know who will be doing it at the last moment!

Author Reply: Do you suppose? I wonder why everyone always picks on that particular hobbit? *grin*

There is something very endearing about hobbits bustling around a kitchen and cooking their favorite foods. I epecially loved Gandalf's "eagle eye" trained on Pippin. I don't blame Pip for procrastinating, it's always so sad to pack up one's things and have to deal with an empty room, even for a day. I put it off too! :D

Author Reply: Hobbits just seem to *belong* in a kitchen. I loved this fic, because it took place *entirely* in the kitchen! (Well, I suppose the larder, as well.) I was going to do a bit about the three bigger members of the Company coming up the street and smelling the baking--and then thought, no, I'll just have them mention it--the whole thing will be in the kitchen!

And I thought it would be hilarious if poor put-upon Pip, after getting the third degree about his packing from his cousins that morning should have to endure the same thing again from Gandalf. I could just *hear* Frodo and Merry sniggering, LOL!
