Testaments of the Past  by Dreamflower 13 Review(s)
RobbieReviewed Chapter: 3 on 10/9/2012
That's a very touching story. I keep picturing Frodo as he looked through that box for a last time and thought of the Sam, Rosie, Merry and Pippin looking at the things in it once they found it.
Also very interesting is that mention of Sam getting saved from drowning by Frodo. I'd love to read that in detail. Maybe that was the start of Sam hating water?

Author Reply: I can imagine Frodo going through it before he packed it away as well, having his own lovely memories of the past.

I have never written about it. I believe that particular anecdote came from my co-author, Gryffinjack. But it's certainly a plot bunny to keep in mind!

Thank you so much for the lovely review, Robbie! It's always so nice to be reminded of one of my older stories, and very nice indeed to see that someone else still enjoys it!

Butterflies, dragonflies, and bees! We do love our insects, don't we?

Very sweet, the stories and the keepsakes.

Author Reply: *grin* Now that's a thought!

I'm glad you are enjoying it!

I am a very well stuffed hobbit from much too much food today but in all my fullness I have managed to enjoy this story immensely. I love how the hobbits remember Frodo and their own past and the drawings and little thigns that you made to fit the story is just wonderdul. Well done the both of you!

Well, you see, Sam, Merry and Pippin are finding what *is* there, and they won't find what isn't...or will they? Just wait and see.

You know...I don't think this wee box has enough room for all of the great things I have to say about this most exquisite chapter! but I'll give it a whirl. ;-)

I got a hearty chuckle out of Merry and Sam giving the whistle to Pippin, and Frodo hiding a piece of Merry's puzzle in order to stop the child's obsession--and young children do get obsessed, so I felt for poor Frodo. I saw the photo of the puzzle--perhaps another photo of the puzzle with one of the pieces missing would have been in order, lol!

The short tales within were pure delight--I think my favourite is Frodo and the red ribbon from the swimming contest. That got me misty-eyed.

The notion of passing baby clothes around is most definitely good hobbit-sense, or otherwise! One should think that that would be more prevalent today with clothes prices as they are.

It is such a pleasure to read this story so chock-full of memories and trinkets from previous tales! I love continuity, and strive for it myself, though I miss the mark on occassion. I admire you for being able to keep on track with your own. :-) I think the illustrations you post on LJ is fantastic--and the artist, too!

Looking forward to more!

Author Reply: Yes, I thought it would be funny if Frodo confiscated the puzzle after he got sick of putting it together--but he wouldn't want to hurt Merry's feelings, hence his subterfuge.

The swimming ribbon was another of Jackie's lovely ideas, and she executed it beautifully.

Well, the Shire is an old-fashioned and rural society, and of course passing around baby-clothes was common. Primula had kept just these special few, but of course the rest of his baby-clothes had long since been passed on.

It's hard sometimes--especially with as many stories as I have. And Jackie and I thank you for your comments on the illustrations--we have both worked pretty hard on them.

We are hoping to get a new chapter up very soon! It's a bit slower working together, plus getting the links and so forth in order.

I'm not even halfway through this chapter, however, I can't stay to read further tonight.

That boat and puzzle are familiar to me--although I believe I've read the "puzzle story" recently. I have yet to come upon the tale that Bell gives Frodo the black wool pouch. It must be a sad tale--I almost cried with Sam. :'(

This is too cool--almost like a "revising" of previous stories I've read. :-)

I'll return tomorrow and read the rest...and also take a gander at the link of items found...and then leave you another review. :-D

Author Reply: The puzzle and boat are new to this story; but you may in fact be recalling *another* puzzle--the one Pippin gave Merry, when Merry was a bit older. The black pouch is also new to this story, though it may yet appear in another one.

And of course, there are *numerous* references to older stories.

I'm glad you're enjoying it!

I think the mushroom tale has to be my favourite. Although they are all delightful.

I suppose Frodo just gave up on trying to decide what was more essential to his well-being than any other and just decided to leave it all. Probably didn't really expect to survive the journey.

The debate over the baby clothes is most amusing!

Author Reply: *grin* The mushroom tale was Gryffinjack's idea, and her execution--she did it very well, I thought!

Well--perhaps not *all*. But our lads at this point are dealing with what he did leave. He couldn't have taken much--after all, he supposedly was just going on a visit to Bilbo in Rivendell when he left, and Sam would have been suspicious if he had taken so much with him.

I figured only the wives would have the clout to put an end to *that* discussion, LOL!

That is all so very sweet! *sigh*

I love the lasses and the baby clothes, their good hobbit sense of knowing they should be used, passed around amoungst the three families.

And I love the photos and drawings of the various items :)

MEWD!!!

Author Reply: *grin*

I figured it would just be too hard for Sam to admit Frodo's baby things should be used--I'm sure that there are a number of Frodo's things in Bag End that Sam can't bear to see touched. Yet he is going to have to get over that as he and Rose have more children, and as they grow older. But Rose and Estella just took over--baby clothes are, after all, a female area of expertise!

We are having a great time with those! I loved making those eensy little baby things (though I nearly went cross-eyed with the little bumblebees! 28 count linen for the bib, and an even tinier thread count on the blue fabric!) they were so cute and fun. And I had a blast doing the calligraphy on the documents as well!

And just wait until you see the adorable drawing Jackie has coming up in a future chapter...

Lovely, Dreamflower, absolutely lovely. There's just so much detail and emotion in here that I don't even know where to start! The ribbon, the babyclothes, the mushroom, the puzzle! It was all so delightful and yet sad as well. So, I'll simply say Well Done for everything and I can't wait to see what the hobbits find in Frodo's box next.

Author Reply: We're so glad you are enjoying it. Jackie and I have had a lot of fun figuring out what's in that box and why!

We are working on getting the next chapter ready soon!

The lasses are ever practical *g* And I loved sneaky Frodo over the puzzle!

Author Reply: Of course they are. Wives know these things, LOL!

I could just see Frodo heartily sick of that puzzle, but not wanting to hurt little Merry's feelings by not helping him put it together one more time...
