| Okay--now this is an unusual tenet. I fear I never read the original, so this should be interesting. Author Reply: I found it a very fascinating concept, that Boromir and Faramir should meet Frodo years before. Claudia's story only covered the time at hand. But when I read it, I could not help but wonder how it would affect the future. | |

| Well, we do not know much about Boromir's feelings on the quest from the book. But what happens to him here, in this story, feels much more intense. He senses very early that there is something strange happening to him, but he has not figured it out yet. On the other hand Frodo is a dear friend to him and so the Ring's strategy to make Frodo look weak and foolish and unqualified to carry the Ring in Boromir's eyes doesn't work at all! So the Ring starts a different approach: protecting Frodo by separating It from him. This might even work! And the outcome could be very dangerous! Again, I can think of lots of possibilities of what might happen next! Author Reply: I think a pre-existing friendship with Frodo would make all the difference in the world to how he would react to things. He'd have felt guilty over having injured Frodo all those years ago, he'd have already known and respected the fact that hobbits are tougher than they look, and he'd be totally committed to protecting his friend. So, yes, the Ring will have to try a different tack. I think that this whole idea was what attracted me to want to remix that particular story: the whole idea of how a friendship already in place between Frodo and Boromir and Faramir would impact the Quest... | |

| Wow, what a captivating plot, Dreamflower! I don't know Claudia's story - yet, that is ;-) But it seems it ended long before Frodo left the Shire with the Ring. So, there's much space left for speculations! I loved your description of Merry and Sam through Boromir's eyes. Both are protecting Frodo, but in different ways. Merry does it more openly, even challenging (I'd like to see that), whereas Sam operates from the background. I'm looking forward to reading more! Author Reply: Yes, "Clear Shot" took place when Frodo was in his late tweens, and Bilbo was still in the Shire. Both of them are very protective of Frodo. But Sam has learned to keep a low profile as a working class hobbit, while Merry is a Brandybuck! I should have the next chapter up very soon. | |
