Adventures of an Éored: Sins of the Father  by Katzilla 40 Review(s)
Agape4GondorReviewed Chapter: 4 on 8/22/2008
Very, very, very nice chapter. I loved Eomer and his own horse at the beginning and the fact that he was chosen to go with his captain on such a foray AND especially the 'taming' of the great stallion.

Excellent.... In fact, I got shivers at the ending! Hooray - I like to think that a wee bit of Elf got into his blood too with Theodwyn being Morwen's daughter!

An excellent chapter - sorry I'm so late in reviewing... I have absolutely adored Eomund since he 'happened' into one of my tales... so it's always been hard to think that, because of his passionate hatred for Orcs he was so easily lured into such a trap.

You tell the tale well - I like that it was a concerted effort and planned. Makes it a little more palatable for me... poor Eomund.

And poor Eomer for having to listen to a malignment of his beloved father... though I don't particularly think that many would have condemned Eomund... but it is plausible.

As I said, excellent chapter.

An excellent chapter - as always...

I was reading in the lunchroom and didn't get to 'mark up' the paper as I usually do... but there was so much in this chapter that was wonderful.

You capture an Eomer who is quite believable. I'm glad his friend from the future is with him now... his awareness of a problem and then trying to solve it - and his courage to come up against THE Rohir - are great.

What I like best is that you have now kept the tension pretty intense for both chapters... I'm wanting to find out what the heck is wrong with Arnhelm and smack him side of the head, but I love that I don't know yet - and more importantly - Eomer doesn't know yet.

Great chapter - keep 'em coming! I'm ready, I'm ready!

Your fan....

Author Reply: Hi Agape,

and thanks again for your treasured comments! I'm glad you liked the chapter and especially to hear that you find my version of Éomer "believable". I'm really working hard in my effort to correct his image of a "mindless brute" he seems to have gained in fanfiction after the movies.

Well, so now you'll find out what happened with Arnhelm and Eomund, and I can't wait to read what you think. :-)

best,
katzilla

Hi Katzilla,

Glad that you are back, I've always enjoyed your stories. This one promises to be very interesting. Young riders in action! and it seems that Eomer is inhering some old problem. I'm guessing that his father and Arnhelm had a conflict...a lot of possibilities there...from military career to a wife...we'll see.

I like that your Eomer thinks before acting, and is behaving according to his recruit rank (so far) Usually in most of the fics he is always acting before thinking, but I believe that as a warrior, that is not the case, it is just that people try to match him with his father character plus Eomer charge in Gondor, which I think that was an extreme circumstance, they literally were charging to death. Anyway, I love your Eomer, really.

I like to see his friendship with Eothain, in this early period, did I already told you that I was mad when you kill him in Ghost...? It will be interesting to see him bonding with the warriors, he will be their King after all...

Thanks, Fantasia.

Author Reply: Hi Fantasia,

and thanks once again for your thoughts on my latest chapter. :-) Yes, I also find the Rohírrim in action wonderful to write about; I wonder why it is that not many authors take advantage of that. I'm also glad to hear that you like my version of Éomer, as I am quite enraged to find that in the majority of fanfiction world, he tends to get written as a mindless, raging bull, something that contradicts the way Tolkien had written him. A mindless brute would certainly not have acted the way Éomer did when he first meet Aragorn and his companions on the plains, placing his life in a stranger's hands on good faith.

As for killing "Éothain"in " Ghost Story", I must admit that it was only because it was my first-ever LotR-story, and I had the greatest problems in thinking up Rohirric names for my characters, so I browsed the book to find who had survived the Ring War... poor Éothain! I hope you are not so angry at me now that you won't read on... ;-)

Now I guess Eomund has done something to annoy the scout - his hot temper and all that. Ideas spring to mind but I will wait and see. LBJ

Author Reply: Now you've got *me* wondering about those ideas of yours... ;->

I shouted hooray when I saw this! Great to know that there is more Eomer - I enjoyed him so much in your Banishment tale!

I did a quick 'oh my' when the boy paused at the transienc of life... I smiled and agreed with Tolgor on the tenacity of Orcs... I loved the young man trying to carry the buck all by himself... the phrase 'scribbled onto his brow' was neat... Eomer was lauded for the buck - I'm glad the men gave him such appreciation!... I LOL when I read of the 'lack' of control for poor Eomer during his first 'cleaning'... and just crumpled at Arnhel's response as he was introduced to Eomer...

It looks like I better saddle up and hold tightly to the reins... a wild ride is coming, if I read the signs correctly! Hooray again!

Author Reply: Hi Agape,

how wonderful to know that you're still out there! :-) This story was actually a big surprise for me, too, because usually, I need much longer to recover from a big novel like "Banishment". But after all the hectic stress of the last months (moving, etc.), I felt more and more that something was missing in my life... and then the son of Eomund knocked at my door again. :-D

I'm glad to read that you are still with me and hope you will like this story as much as my other ones.

cheers,
Katzilla

I enjoyed this start and I'm looking forward to reading more. I like it that Elfhelm gets on with the scout. I see Elfhelm as cautious and prudent on his behalf and also for his men. He survives and more of his men do than those of some other leaders. Eomund was not cautious or prudent. Oh Dear! It appears that your "Sins of the Father" are, as ever, to be visited upon the son.
Interestingly Eomer is neither cautious nor prudent in Tolkien's account so it seems to me that if he is destined to learn from Arnhelm it will merely moderate his nature (which is akin to his father's) rather than change it. Alternatively Eomer and Arnhelm could become implacable foes but I hope not.
I do enjoy reading stories about young adults far more than the equally worthy stories about young children so I'm really looking forward to how you take this story on.
By the way, I think you may have intended Eomer to have "wracked his empty head" rather than to have "wrecked" it.
Pryderi.

Author Reply: Hi Pryderi!

Thanks so much for your thoughts on this first chapter; they are very interesting to read and while I won't tell what's going ot happen further, your thoughts go in the right direction.

I am glad to hear that you enjoy my tales of "Young Éomer" so much, as I'm having a great time writing him and thinking up the episodes of his life before LotR. I, too, think that writing him as a young adult is more interesting (at least to me) than writing about his childhood days, because there is just so much more potential for conflict and deeper thoughts than a child would have. Also, the Riddermark itself in the pre-LotR stage offers so many opportunities for a writer. I am still astonished (and quite sad) that 95% of the Éomer-writers choose to write how about he meets Lothiriel. As the "ultimate" way of that has already been done (IMHO) by Maddy's "The Healer and the Warrior" + following stories, I am just not that interested in those stories, well written as many of them may be. I'd wish more writers would take the son of Eomund and give him something to do in some serious drama/ adventure stories, because that is what the man was very obviously made for, I think.

Oh, and thanks for pointing out my little mess-up (hi hi!!), I corrected it already. :-)

cheers,
Katzilla

Very authentic rendering of how it might have been - look forward to the rest of this.LBJ

Author Reply: Hi Sidonie,

and thanks so much for your comment. I hope the rest of the story will come to me as easily as this first chapter.

It's always wonderful to hear from you. :-)

Best wishes,
